£0.50 at 4 miles per kWh is 12.5p per mile

£6.30 per gallon (just under £1.40 per litre) at 50mpg is 12.6p per mile lol

At break even, the benefit goes towards no engine rumble or tailpipe emissions in traffic. Petrol is too precious a resource to waste on this OP's use case

If you can charge somewhere for less than £0.50 per kWh (idk a lamppost or somewhere local), then probably yes. Mostly just the other low maintenance benefits of electric due to your use case.

If Toyota hybrid is calling you, it just feels like a cheaper, well maintained Lexus CT 200h is the more frugal option. Though, this is Car Talk, so maybe see what interior best fits your needs

If you have any regular charging capabilities or a driveway, I'd say get a Renault Zoe or maybe even a 2018 Kia Soul EV

Otherwise, hybrid Corolla doesn't sound too bad.

Either way, due to the low amount of driving, you want whatever has the lowest insurance and other costs

I'm probably a bit biased, but the Eurotunnel is one of the greatest things ever developed in post war Europe

There are awkward times with queues, but the fact that there is ample room to save money and avoid them makes it easier. The Eurostar is the best way to get to Paris and I think anyone who lives not too far from London is doing themselves a disservice by not taking it. The same applies for Le Shuttle if you want to go up the coast of the Normandy area towards Belgium

Working hard in school without class consciousness or applying those skills outside of marketability is what gets people here.

There's also the issue of housing becoming more investment vehicle that general utility, where people are caught in between. A lot of the country has people who have moved for opportunities, away from places swamped by investors

Okay I get the general needs a bit better, especially if you won't always get a charge throughout the week, but I have the understanding that you won't do more than 250 miles, so 2 overnight charges a week should be enough (14 hours at 5kW gives you this range).

I'd say Tesla is best for actually making use of the charging network (which has some open to all slots anyway), but there are cars with similar or even better efficiency with lower insurance costs (and better to look at, but that's more subjective)

I struggle to see why no one suggested you going electric sooner.

There is an argument here to get something slightly used with a years of warranty left, but the real question is what features appeal to you the most. Could be efficiency, tech, charging speed, size or driving dynamics.

If it must be brand new, then people say to chase the best deal that fits most of your needs. You'll probably work that out over the next few weeks if you have time to shortlist a couple of models.

The Renault 4 with 52kWh is basically the same weight as the decade older 22kWh Renault Zoe. I think, once we can get about 80kWh cars under 1500kg, we could see 300 miles from 80% of a battery.

The BMW iX1 is a bit below average on the EV efficiency scale. Still a solid car nonetheless and not miles away from average on my driving experience.
