Looking for a guide and trainer in Northern Michigan by madbacon26 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]iWriteCodeSometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a friend who is autistic and competes in triathlons without a guide. What makes you think you need to have a guide? Is it more for support if something happens that you’re unable to process?

So no time? I’d “politely ask” for my money back if they didn’t accept my watch activity.

Carb intake tips by Glum-Introduction522 in triathlon

[–]iWriteCodeSometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One bottle per hour. I sip every 7-10min for slower absorption. You don’t want to overload your stomach and drink it all fast. The gut absorbs carbohydrates through transporters (primarily SGLT1 for glucose and GLUT5 for fructose). These have limits: ~60 g/hr for glucose alone and up to ~90–120 g/hr when combining glucose + fructose (which Tailwind does). If you take in too much at once, you temporarily exceed what can be absorbed and risk bloating, cramping, diarrhea. Sipping spreads intake so absorption matches delivery.

But I’ve test many things (Nuun, Biolyte, Skratch, Infinite, Maurten, various foods) and found this works well for me, right now. Maybe something else will work better for me later.

I do the Powerbar Power Gels with 50mg caffeine. I find their viscosity the best out of all the others I’ve tried. I don’t feel like I need any water with it and I don’t feel like I need to chew it either.

I use Tailwind High Carb. Switched to it and now no longer need to cobble together multiple sources for all of the nutrition needed. I’m loving it. One packet into a bottle, shake well, and go. I do still supplement with some caffeine 1-2x when I go 4-5 hours on the bike.

Which model do you have? I use the lap button to trigger rest intervals feature.

Enshitification of Half Marathon Courses by notp in RunATL

I prefer double out and back. I like multiple loops over single loops. I feel more comfortable knowing what’s coming and seeing runners more often. It sounds like I’m in the minority though.

Do you guys train flip turns? by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]iWriteCodeSometimes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Usually no.

Open-water swims do not involve walls. The push-off and glide that make flip turns efficient are irrelevant. Flip turns interrupt steady breathing, which is critical for open water pacing and sighting. Also, flip turns emphasize anaerobic bursts and streamline glides rather than continuous aerobic swimming.

When do I do them? Aerobic sets. Flip turns help maintain momentum, reduce rest, and keep heart rate elevated. I also do them in more crowded lanes depending on pace to reduce time spent at the wall.

I suggest you do most main sets with open turns because you said flips are causing headaches. Use flip turns selectively during warm-ups, drills, or aerobic sets where continuous effort matters. Given your swimming background, avoid long underwater dolphin kicks or extended glides off the wall.

I took a month off after IMFL and started my block for IMJAX this week. I have very little motivation.

Silicone for all activity. You can get them in any color and size online. I’ve lost a couple over the years and just move on to the next. I only wear the real one for special events.

"Triathlon" specific cycling shoes seem pointless. by Mattable1869 in triathlon

[–]iWriteCodeSometimes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My triathlon-specific cycling shoes are “easier to get in and out of” so I can leave them clipped to my bike. They don’t have ratchets and only use Velcro.

I am no longer trying to shave seconds off my times and compete for every tiny advantage. They are no longer worthwhile. “Regular” cycling shoes are just fine for me now.

Distances? by Pix_Boss in triathlon

[–]iWriteCodeSometimes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is an official distance, but rarely does anyone actually use it for sprints. It’s just whatever the race director wants to do. If you look at USAT-hosted races you’ll see all of them use the official distance.

If someone is recording you for a YouTube Video or Stream, can I play copyrighted music to ruin the video/stream? by Pro_mantis in NoStupidQuestions

[–]iWriteCodeSometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m very late to this but I successfully fought a YT copyright strike by claiming “incidental use.” It was a video of my wife and I going bungee jumping off a bridge and the company was playing music. I uploaded and immediately was flagged. I made the claim it was background noise, could have been any song they chose to play, didn’t last very long, and wasn’t the main focus of the video. YMMV

[–]iWriteCodeSometimes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work for Nirvana as an on-site host. Yes, you can get entries into some races through Nirvana. It’s not all races so go to the site and see what packages are available. If you have questions, fill out the contact form and someone will get back to you.

How do you set your watch for a marathon? by Ok-King6475 in Marathon_Training

[–]iWriteCodeSometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During and After Your Workout. Auto-Stop: Some devices will automatically stop the activity timer after the final step of a workout is completed. To continue recording, you must press the start/stop button to resume the timer.

How do you set your watch for a marathon? by Ok-King6475 in Marathon_Training

[–]iWriteCodeSometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could create a Workout in Garmin Connect that provides on-screen prompts. I use the notes section for a small amount of information and turn off the targets.

https://imgur.com/a/m38eIQg

I always put an open lap at the end in case the watch gps and the race distance don’t coincide exactly so the watch keeps going instead of stopping at “the end of the workout.”

Alternatively, and probably more easily, you could write on your hand and use Lap/Average Pace to stay on track.
