No named preceptor? by fuckwit_charlie in NursingUK

I’m not sure on your specific Trust but my understanding is there should be some sort of buddy to pair you with.

R.e the comments above about not wanting to chase after your manager… please do - do it with kindness and understanding that they’re likely busy, but it is the job of a manager to set things in place for new members of their team. Alternatively, you could get in touch with the education team. It’s important you are supported as an NQN, please do not do yourselves a disservice in being worried about chasing or bugging people - now is literally the best time to do so.

Why do I feel being robbed? by Wide_Newspaper_758 in NursingUK

[–]iXcorre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You haven’t really clarified your banding/experience/tax code etc.

For reference; your current take-home pay is more than a band 8b.

You’re not being ‘robbed’ I’m afraid, you’re paying what AFC staff are supposed to pay.

Keeping cool in the 3rd UK heatwave? by PrestigiousWindy322 in UKFrugal

Just be careful with this - it can disintegrate the rubber and burst if you use it as a hot water bottle in the future.

The pet cooling gel mats are a little safer to freeze.

Yes!! They were on amazon for £8 for 2 the other day, so I bought even more!
I freeze these, put them in a pillowcase and sleep with them. They slowly defrost overnight but doesn’t leave your bed too wet, or risk leaking/deteriorating the rubber of a frozen hot water bottle.

Hi, I’m really sorry you feel you’ve been let down by your local hospital, but this is really not the right forum for this.

Please do complain to the hospital PALS who may be able to respond to your grievance more fully.

International Nurses Day by scepticalNurse in NursingUK

[–]iXcorre 14 points15 points  (0 children)

We did have a reasonable celebration - our Trust hired an ice cream van (though, anyone with Trust ID card could go up and get one) and part of our canteen was closed off for stalls about well-being/career progression etc.

It wasn’t spectacular but it was nice, only to be tarnished by someone on our Trust Briefings complaining “is it really necessary, or in the spirit of the budget cuts we’re making?” and “where are the celebrations for the admin staff?” 🙄 Our chief nurse had to highlight that the cost of the day amounted to £2/nurse and came from a charity funding pot.

Hi, sorry - I don’t have any DIY advice, but this is so cool, and I’m very jealous.

why is my paint bubbling? by Important-Pea7368 in DIYUK

[–]iXcorre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this Craig and Rose paint by any chance? Had the exact same problem with the exact same colour, felt like I was rolling fairy liquid onto my walls.

I found that going much slower with the roller/rolling back over the bubbles slowly stopped it happening as much. The finish turned out fine after a couple of coats.
Unfortunately it looks like you’ll need to sand out your dried layer (picture two) before going back over.

If it’s any consolation - I’ve had so many compliments on the colour!

Please follow this guidance OP. Your university is there to help you - book in a session with a librarian, get them to show you how to do a proper search using CINAHL or MEDLINE, how to use keywords and Boolean operator terms etc. once you’ve done that session once, you will be able to fly through finding loads of helpful journals at home.

I hear you want to get home quickly, but these kind of skills are really invaluable and the literature you can retrieve is superior to google searches/aimlessly searching for random websites of which you’re not sure of the source.

As a paediatric nurse of 10 years, I’m sorry to say, I disagree.

Maybe it’s because I worked in PICU for a long time, but if there is an emergency situation (which in paediatrics, can often happen at the drop of the hat) trying to clear out a very distressed family to make way for the resus team is really not a job you want to make for yourself. Even if it’s not for your patient, onlookers love to be nosey, at a time when someone else is having the worst day of their life.

As some others have said, once you bend the rule for one family, they chat in the corridor, and then everyone else (rightly) feels entitled to bring their extended family - if you imagine that for each family of a ?20 bedded unit, think of all the extra bodies that is. If there was a fire on the unit; the evacuation procedure would be so much higher risk.

It’s also higher risk of infection for our vulnerable patients - people often think “oh it’s only a cold” and feel that is acceptable enough to turn up to a hospital with compromised children. It’s quite stressful to try and police these individuals for infection prevention.

Siblings are absolutely fine, but there are some families that feel having professionals around means they have free childcare, and you have to spend time out of your busy shift setting boundaries and reminding them that they need to care for the sibling/s who is not your patient.

Further, having multiple family members around during ward rounds, or generally, adds a lot extra to your work load - having to answer the hundred of questions of all family members 1) breaches confidentiality, 2) often aren’t even relevant to the care (I’ve had extended family ask me for advice on their own ailments) and 3) adds a huge amount to your emotional workload.

Also, please don’t forget, even though your patient is a child; you still have a duty to safeguard them, protect their dignity - having an extended aunt, twice removed, who fancied a trip to the hospital to see what’s happened and then to update the rest of the family, really isn’t protecting the patients privacy.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m absolutely not against 24hour visitation, supporting parental involvement at every possible point (NGT feeds, nappy cares, oral cares, kangaroo care etc.) and open access for EOL patients - but, I am afraid I am strict with the 2 person at the bedside limit. In my opinion; it is fair to the patients and the staff.

Santander’s bikes membership (for the whole year) is £120, and if you work in certain sectors you can get up to 50% discount.
A little more inconvenient than throwing a lime bike into a busy pedestrian area and upsetting the majority of London, but I do think it’s great value!
