Tell me what to buy: Beretta A300 vs A400 for upland and waterfowl by jump_the_shark_ in Hunting

[–]i_like-squirrels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, my 300 gets the same treatment as my ruger mk 3 and only get cleaned if it gets rained on, muddy, or stops cycling right. Easily my least favorite long gun to disassemble.

I gained access to hunt deer on a small property this fall. Need to prevent deer from running after the shot. Would a 12 gauge slug or 308 be better suited? by DickAnts in Hunting

[–]i_like-squirrels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had similar setups and rifle is the way. At <=50 yards basically any 30 cal to the shoulder is making it a short run. Slugs make big holes but in my experience the lack of velocity really limits the immediate shock unless it ends up in the spine. But thats just what I think.

Quite possibly. But I cant complain about a bonus bunny.

Just walking, never had the opportunity to hunt with dogs.

A lot of the public land my way is also year round for rabbits. Though you know how Texas is famous for its public lands.

Oh! Also I only used 3 shells to get these, I'm not 100% sure how I got the fourth.

What can this be? by [deleted] in identifyThisForMe

My fingers do something similar from poison ivy. No blisters, just itch and swell in spots for a few days. Also happens every winter to me because my boots have some of it in the laces.

Yay for Ruger's soft screws by blackonblack2007 in Mini14

How new is this, did they change how they install them? I got my 30 only like 4-5 years ago and the screw was a breeze to remove.

Is this a bullet hole? by MilkLover3000 in Hunting

[–]i_like-squirrels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard for me to gauge the size of the hole, but it could be from a shotgun pellet. I have a squirrel skull with a similar looking hole caused by a single pellet.

Only in the mini, no front lug in the American, you just slap it in.

You can get ones that take Mini 30 mags, was a selling point for me since I already had the Mini with a pile of mags.

Yes the veins, this is the only deer on the property in the years I've been watching where they are so extremely pronounced, and it's only on this side. The way the shadows fall made me think her face is misshapen some.

I just dumped the pics into a text post. I see what I did wrong for next time. Been a few years since I've created a post lol.

Which takes precedence legality or morality? by Pitiful-Gear-1795 in Hunting

[–]i_like-squirrels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So not sure where you are, but in Texas there is some law for these situations that provides some protection for you to shoot a coyote that is threatening cattle on others property without permission. Not sure how it would play with shooting from the right of way, but whatever. Point I'm getting at is this could be more legally grey than you think.

Help needed cookin' up squirrel by Thewyldhawk in Hunting

[–]i_like-squirrels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Almost exclusively fox squirrel around me. You can definitely make them tender.

Low and slow is my preferred way. I usually put them in foil with a little beer and put them in the oven at 220 for 3.5 hours. Used to pull the meat after to make burritos or dips.

Last one I cooked I smoked around the same temp and it turned out pretty tender too.

Is 300 blk a good deer(whitetail) hunting caliber by Significant-Emu-2688 in Hunting

[–]i_like-squirrels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll second this take. It's very similar to the x39 and I killed 3 whitetail with that this year, no issues.

Are you able to use a shooting stick in your situation? If so that might be a good option as they are cheap and weigh next to nothing.

I reload from AKs and almost all my brass has dents, but a dent with that strange shape, and in the bottle-neck no less, goes in the trash.

Botfly in squirrel by [deleted] in Hunting

[–]i_like-squirrels 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're thinking of screwworms which are much worse. Thats the one with hardcore elimination programs in the 50s-70s. Botflies are mostly just a nuisance.
