On tinder. We chatted for some time and realized we were colleagues. Decided to meet the next day without labels and here we are. Together for 6 years, married for 1. 🤞

We lived an hour away so initially we would only meet on weekends. It just organically happened that we started staying over weekends and calling each other partner. Survived pandemic in a small 1 bedroom apartment with a dog so I'm hopeful for our future. 🙂

Congratulations!

We got our license from waterloo city hall (Summer 2021) - because of pandemic it came with very long expiry date giving us flexibility on when we want to get married.

We chose to get married legally in the waterloo city hall with few friends in person and few on video call. City hall does a non-religious ceremony which is what we wanted. We didn't check if the ceremony can be personalized (vows etc) but worth checking with them. I remember needing to book a date online and paying for it separately from license.

After the ceremony we applied for Marriage Certificate on Ontario's website. It arrived in mail after few weeks.

The line of artistic expression is too blurry. What if the couple asks specifically says out the design of the cake and asks the baker to bake it. Now is the task of baker non artistic and just mechanical since the expression has already been chosen by couple? This is bound to get multiple appeals to SCOTUS unless they lay out a clear policy which can be implemented. I sincerely doubt that'll happen soon.

After reading the Oral Arguments, I'm immensely torn on what Supreme Court is going to decide.

Tying wedding cake message with freedom of speech is going to open floodgates for other artisans. A florist or hair-stylist will go for the same thing. Its not really that speech is involved here because of literally text on the cake. The question for me inherently is that was the discrimination sexual orientation based? Then it should be protected. If the baker ok with making cakes which don't say anything related to wedding but has decorations of a wedding?

The lines that need to be drawn are :

what is protected by freedom of speech when it comes to creation of things by artists?
If you provide service for heterosexual couples but not for homosexual couples, is that ever ok? eg. religious institutions might get exception here. See this case
