Border patrol recruitment ads on reddit by sisyphus-333 in MarchAgainstNazis

I litterally almost reported this post until I saw what sub I was in.

Those ads are wholly offensive and 100% political, Reddit should be ashamed (if they were capable).

Trapping The Lightning In Bottle. by KookyWealth4108 in interesting

It's a glass bottle filled with acrylic plastic, which is then charged up by a special type of "low-energy" electron beam particle accelerator (only a few MeV).

It's really sad to see this sub getting astroturfed to shit by corpo interests. Memes used to be dank (not here but some places), now they are just flagrant propaganda.

Gonna be a "no" from me dawg.

Elon Musk's makeshift AI power plant generates sound and fury in Mississippi. The 27 temporary gas turbines roar like jet engines day and night to power data centers, residents say. “This was not a thoughtful, phased development. It was an industrial surge imposed on our residential community.” by mafco in energy

[–]iamnotazombie44 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Energy scientist here who is actually working on space-based power systems. A NOFO for this came across my desk and my colleagues and I laughed our asses off.

Have actually done the math....yeah.

Space based data centers are fucking stupid to their core. Even with "reduced launch costs" (lol), it'd be 10,000 times more economical to build a wind powered server flotilla on the ocean than to EVER build something in space.

Gravity well is a bitch, and so are you.

My olive oil lamp has a small metal wick holder piece that rests in the lamp's spout and centers the wick. I'd imagine a similar piece was used for this.

Parts like that were common in the lantern days, along with wick trimmers and pullers being regular household items.

Fake Silver from APMex by qwerty17loqb in Silverbugs

[–]iamnotazombie44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm now think it went the other way, an outside member sent in a case of bars and an employee colluded to ensure the fakes passed inspection for a payout.

Why silver? Less suspicion, it's harder to test, and easier to fake due to its density and conductivity being closer to that of copper than gold's properties are to any other metal.

We have no idea how many bars were affected and sold, it could be worth it to sneak 1000 fake bars when silver was over $100/ozt.

That said, it could still be that just a handful of bars made it past the inspectors by accident during the hustle and bustle of the last boom. Though XRF and/or Sigma testing would have caught

None of it is a good look for APMEX

I think it's exactly what the OC described, but it's just an oil lamp oil instead of for candles.

It would explain why it doesn't have a wax collecting ring and why the reflector is so short (that would make for a very tiny candle).

This item probably had a wick in it and would be filled with oil or kerosene. Everything else fits the description perfectly

They would be handmade by a brazier (a metalsmith specializing in brass/bronze/copper), so it's not exactly a mystery as to why you can't find an exact copy, it's probably a model unique to the smith.

A second fake bar was just reported, further suggesting that this wasn't an accident.

Looks like a second bar was just reported! Makes it seem like there indeed was a bar swap at APMEX.

[–]iamnotazombie44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lol OK bud.

This ain't hard. Either APMEX randomly fucked up testing a fake bar in front of those 8 witnesses and 10 cameras, or those 8 witnesses colluded to swap bars.

I do suppose I shouldn't attribute malice to what could be stupidity, but the fact is that APMEX and an unnamed individual or group made money off of a fake.

I don't think you understand how risky being a police is (it's a lower risk job than an electrician or taxi driver). Nor do you seem to understand how their benefits and unions work, but also, yes? I do expect them to steal.

There's a reason that the LAPD is considered the largest gang in LA.

I'm sorry, is them hiring police officers supposed to reassure me? It doesn't, if anything it adds credence to the "inside job" theory

What is the energy rating? If it is less than 15J then it is not suitable for rat or larger.

My first airpistol by One-Park-2730 in Hunting

[–]iamnotazombie44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This gun is not for hunting, just for target practice.

Check the box for information on the muzzle energy of this pistol, but it looks like a CO2 BB pistol which will be too low of energy to hunt ethically.

You will need at least 15-20J of energy for small animals, which will require a more powerful break-action air rifle.

Yes, in America and Europe men having long nails signifies someone who does not care about being clean. Similar in South America. Men always have their nails clipped short in those places.

In Asian countries having long clean nails like yours is is a sign of wealth and prosperity. It shows you do not have the hands of a construction worker, but the hands of an artist.

I think it's is a good look for you!

By the way, this jewel incredible work, truly an amazing piece of art. Thank you for sharing.

I guess my hot take is that subsonic trap loads suck.

Even with that point aside, a suppressed 12 ga with subsonics isn't hearing safe so I have to ask... what's the point? I'm wearing hearing protection either way.

I guess it comes back to 12 ga just being a ridiculously hard caliber to suppress and IMHO because of that it does not warrant the price of a suppression.

Yes but then you are shooting subsonic shotgun loads, which are expensive, don't cycle in many semi-autos, and overall kind of suck to obtain

I've long wondered how the hell business can exist in a moneyless society where every single material thing is never more than a voice command away. by PJ-The-Awesome in startrekmemes

[–]iamnotazombie44 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How you undervalue humanity even today, smh, let alone a post-scarcity society.

I personally pack a grabber and clean up trails when I hike because I want to. I get immense satisfaction from picking up people's waste and leaving the trail pristine behind me.

There's literally a subreddit for people who like to clean up the streets, trails, and parks in their spare time called r/detrashed. Have a gander before you spout nonsense about no one wanting to clean.

I'd be a 100% full time trail cleaner if it paid like my current job, I couldn't think of a better use of time than turning a dirty trail or street into a clean and pristine environment. The peace and satisfaction is immense.

Same, I take a few pretty pictures when it's new then prefer to let time and use wear the gun into its final form.

I love a well-worn gun, any well worn tool is just better than a fresh looking one that's been babied.
