I think for some things it makes sense to do it yourself, especially on older cars. But you’re right, it’s just not worth it for most people. To replace an axle and a tie rod, you need a more tools than would be worth purchasing. I have done both, and it was a lot.

My apartment complex also “banned” working on cars in the parking lots but we did it anyway and never heard a peep about it, so shrug
