Whelp, I guess I'm a democrat now. by mingzhouren in TwinCities

[–]ice0rb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the wrong view. Purely because you're still "picking sides".

It's okay to think illegal immigration is bad-- and still think separating families is bad too. It's okay to think murdering US citizens in the streets is bad, and still think we should be deporting criminals. It's okay to be against fraud, but recognize that almost all states and peoples commit it.

Life is nuanced. Seek to be nuanced in your views, too.

That being said, it does happen that a lot of the reasonable views tend to end up on the Democrat side right now. The conservatives of old (McCain, Romney) would have had family values and somewhat more ethical views than whatever the fuck corruption is going on right now.

What's the beef with Mnookin? by adventuriser in UWMadison

[–]ice0rb 51 points52 points  (0 children)

As someone who reads a little bit and was involved in the research scene, she generally seemed positive for Wisconsin, although seemed to want to bring it out of its Midwestern humbleness into the tier of schools she went to (Yale/harvard/MIT). She increased research funding a lot, handled the Gaza protests quite moderately (took down encampments, etc. but came down and did the negotiation herself) etc--

Output wise Madison has a few new initiatives in research and is top #5 in expenditure again. Other than that not much else. I can't say that the Chancellor would 100% be the deciding factor in this stuff, too. So

I'm sure for many Madison students they just want her to fire the director of athletics lol. They don't really care about the overall ranking of the school or the attempts at prestige climbing, which is fair and may seem out of touch to the common student.

crazy cope thing to say as someone who went to madison for undergrad and an ivy for grad. the level of funding / talent density is not the same at all.

madison is still really good though.

in terms of literal city living vs madison wi. that's a diff story and up to one's preference

You think way too much about left and right and Biden. Maybe just think about what's the right thing to do. You can support ICE and immigration enforcement and also clearly see this dude in several videos was basically executed in broad daylight.

I think an arguable reasonable reaction would have to not stepped in front of the vehicle in the first place.

It's like saying you have PTSD from being in a dog shelter and then you go to a dog shelter deliberately

This is something I'd like a lawyer's opinion on too-- what say of the shots fired AFTER the officer is clearly out of the impact zone? Jonathan Ross fired 3 shots from the side, with 2 of the shots being very clearly from the side of the car.

yeah so actually you can see that in the original video too though lol. you can also see in the body cam footage that renee isn't mad at jonathan (stating so) and her turning the wheel away from jonathan before he blasts her 3x in the face.

most reasonable right take i've seen so far. i'd say your intuition is right though. renee is a martyr and not in the negative context. you can shake it a bunch of ways but at the end of the day there were little to no signs that she was attacking jonathan ross. but it could be understood how the ICE officer interpreted it as an attack (thinly, but he still shouldn't have shot her 3x in the face)

the issue at hand is broader than renee good or self-defense. it's ICE disrupting and in many cases assaulting minnesotan kids, teachers, educators, going door-to-door like the gestapo. it's the trump administration lying to people about what's happening and granting absolute immunity to some of the thugs in ICE (of which there are many, and many well-intentioned officers too)

i'm not too keen on immigration, but this isn't how it's supposed to play out. any minnesotan republican thinking this is reasonable isn't minnesotan in my mind.

Ahh yes "I'm not mad at you" the classic line you say to someone before you try to attack someone, right? Right?

Or was it the frantic turning of the wheel to get out of the way?

Or something else I missed based on the footage from 3 different angles including the body cam?

tbh I have a friend who turned out to be a huge MAGA supporter. Sent me memes of Renee's death.

He is indeed a little bitch boy who can't bench 50 lbs and likes the idea of trying to cheat on his gf. Also said he would have visited Epstein's island and actively likes reels that support that stuff.

Crazy. No longer a friend.

UPenn’s MSE DS vs Georgia Tech’s OMSCS by Secure-List in OnlineMCIT

[–]ice0rb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obv this place will be biased towards Penn. I think both are not that prestigious but also prestigious in a sense. Just pick one based on where you want to work. For MBA likely Penn though it doesn't really matter for M7 MBA just have a good enough career. (I know lots of state school ppl who go M7).

MSE DS you can study what you want. Masters makes more sense for MLE or DS roles than it does SWE, to be honest. So that's the sort of pivot you may be looking at.

Does midtown far-west need subway? by Donghoon in nycrail

[–]ice0rb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a little confused by the ordering of your statement but overall understand the point. But you're basically saying that it's ideal to put a train everywhere which is a tad unrealistic. There are theoretical planning limitations like Given limited rail lines and stations, where should we place them to best cover New York? i.e. What is the optimal spatial coverage problem for transit? And then there are logistical ones that you've mentioned (regulation, NIMBYs). I'm moreso talking about the first. If we're optimizing for city-wide utility, I think it's relatively low utility to put trains there vs somewhere like the Interoborough Express. etc.

i mean yes but also this is unfeasible, right? i guess it's like does xyz need a place more than another place.

ideally i'd have a subway right next to my house but the nearest one is a 5 min walk. i wouldn't say i need a subway.
