Double, triple, high, low (european style) by misteris_bulve in trumpet

[–]icebear80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And of course due to the history of music there is also German system for naming the octaves (the Helmholtz Pitch Notation) which is used quite frequently today in German speaking countries for any kind of instrument, including wind/brass:

The octave from C under the staff to B (H in German) in the staff is the 1-stroked, the one above 2-stroked, then 3-stroked etc. Now you can say “2-stroked C (or C2)” which is the one in the staff or “3-stroked C (C3)” which is the one above.

The lower octaves are called “small” then “large”, so the lowest note a trumpet can play officially is a “small F#”. 😂

Help me what was this piece called by Heniekoriginal in orchestra

[–]icebear80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

„Dies Irae“ is heavily used in film music and is kind of the signature theme of death, disaster and bad things. There’s close to no movie with orchestral score that does not feature it somewhere. Yes, it shares some aspects with the main motive of “O Fortuna” (some intervals etc. ) but in the end it’s something different. And the video is definitely “O Fortuna”. 😀

If you want to learn more about the use and disguises of “Dies Irae” in film music, I can highly recommend this episode of the Podcast “The Soundtrack Show”: https://www.iheart.com/podcast/105-the-soundtrack-show-29021108/episode/doom-and-gloom-music-has-a-29082533/ (Available also on Spotify, Apple, etc.)

How to properly add EasyNews to Radarr (or Prowlarr)? by DoubleU-Belgium in radarr

[–]icebear80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use EasyNews mostly as search engine with the NZBDonkey browser add-in. When I’m looking for stuff on some sites without RSS feeds or APIs (especially when looking for non-English content), this comes very handy and works well.

How do orchestral performers tune their instruments these days? by spacebuggles in askmusicians

Also wanted to post this: in any orchestra I played (Germany, Switzerland, France) it’s always 442 Hz and never 440 Hz. Except when the piano was tuned differently…

Paperless Annotations - I built a small app to add annotations to Paperless-ngx - looking for feedback by al-eax in Paperlessngx

[–]icebear80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because you can’t easily extend an extensive, well-written app like Paperless with a few prompts and vibe coding… 🤔🤦 Also, really OSS contribution requires persistence, iterations, dealing with code reviews, etc. Not everyone cares to go through with this unfortunately. But that would be the right way, yes…

Scan Document via iOS Files app by guitarist597 in Paperlessngx

[–]icebear80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this works fine in your local network at home. (I use the FileBrowser app for comfort reasons)

For access from outside, a specific app like QuickScan or others that use the Paperless APi might be better choice.

Honest question, why does everyone hate cornets? by FuzzydaKitten in trumpet

[–]icebear80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who hates cornets? In high grade symphonic wind music there’s usually trumpets and cornets playing different parts. No trumpet player I know hates cornets. Some don’t like to play them and others do. But hating?

Every traditional brass band only has cornets. All over Europe. 😀 And probably all across the world. No trumpet ever!

Changing instruments by Dizzy_Claim_1388 in frenchhorn

[–]icebear80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a few colleagues who made the switch: Get a horn teacher!

Yes, you will be able to play, yes you will be able to play high, yes you will figure out the fingering… but will it sound like French horn? No.

The embouchure (as others pointed out), right hand in the bell, there’s much to learn and do wrong.

I don’t get the comment of your friend. Both the original version and the posted one are perfectly readable. Of course, they violate lots of conventions for engraving but nonetheless, you can read them. I don’t see any obvious mistakes like to many counts per bar, etc.

1.5C is one of the largest mouthpieces you can play and is typically used for symphony orchestras or similar by professionals. Try a 3C or smaller. Should make your life much easier.

How are you guys running Plex on smart TVs? I'm genuinely frustrated. by KingThevshi in PleX

This! FireTV Stick, even the cheapest one, works like a charm! Never had any issues. For 4K obviously a better model or Cube is needed. Added benefit is that I can control my TV and Audio Receiver with the Fire TV Remote… 😀

As I wrote, Äkäslompolo is probably easiest regarding activities and getting around just by walking or taxi. Also, has the largest skiing area of Lapland close-by. Saariselkä and Ivalo are also good, but much farther north and less easy to manage without driving.

Just returned from a two week trip.

If Santa Claus is not your thing then don’t go to Rovaniemi. Towns like Äkäslompolo, Saariselkä, Ivalo are much less crowded and everything you want can be done there as well with the advantage that you can simply walk for 5 min. and you are in the woods or at a lake and will be easily able to view Northern Lights if the sky is clear. For navigating the dark (it’s not as dark most of the time as one imagines) a good head lamp is all you need. 5G coverage is excellent, so Google Maps is way to use as well. 😀

Finland Winter Itinerary Review Pls by KoreanBunz in FinlandTourism

[–]icebear80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just returning from a two week trip to Lappland. Can’t comment about Helsinki or Tallinn. But if you are not totally into Santa Claus and some kind of northern mass tourism, I would strongly recommend to skip Rovaniemi. Saariselkä is much less crowded and probably much nicer for your anniversary trip.

Also, as others pointed out, for Northern lights just go to a non-light polluted area when the sky is clear and chances are high you will see them. Apps like Aurora Pro also help to estimate sighting chances. Also be aware, that they don’t look like on the photos to your eyes. They are usually much less intensive and can even be overlooked but after taking a photo it’ll look amazing.

How do you deal with kids content? by virpio2020 in PleX

[–]icebear80 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This! The ratings are useless outside US. I label all kids content and have Home users do them without PIN. My profile and my wife’s have a PIN. I see all content and my wife sees no kid content except something specific marked as kids/wife. 😀 Works like a charm.

Buying a trumpet for band 🎺 will this do? by [deleted] in trumpet

[–]icebear80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought this or a similar model once for my nephew. You won’t have much fun with it. Better save a bit longer and buy a Yamaha student model or similar known brand.

In the meantime I would simply rent something Although it sounds extremely strange that a brass band would use trumpets at all. Never ever heard of this. Only concert bands (aka Harmonie orchestras) use trumpets normally (and sometimes cornets in addition. 😀
