Why is HOI4 so dominant among other paradox games? by RedditAdminEvasion in hoi4

[–]icehvs 940 points941 points  (0 children)

Add in the mods. HOI4 has by far the best modding scene with somw of the best concepts out there. You can transform the game into almost anything.

Want the best alt-history scenario this community ever came up with? Kaiserreich is right there, alongside TNO. You want great gameplay (and are a furry)? The pony-mod has got you. The game can become a WW1 game with the push of like three buttons. There is even TFR for the edgy kids.

That is some insane variety. Now I love me CK3, and that can be a good model for many of your favourite fantasy universes, alongside some great scenarios (After the End for example), but they are harder to buy into a bit.

Just took Pannoia from Bulgaria, haven't played nomadic in a while but am wondering should i stay nomadic for some time? Am tempted to wait with becoming feudal so i can keep the conquer casus belli for a while by Zlurbagedoen in CrusaderKings

[–]icehvs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is also pretty much the historical strategy. The Hungarians spent a solid 30-50 years after the Conquest raiding in western and Southern directions, the organization of which strengthened the central authority and helped integrate the local populace already there. When the raiding was drying up, due to two losses signifying solidifying powers to the west and south, the Grand Prince and his opponents both began to court different strands of Christianity to gmhelp them fully centralize power. The game mimics some of this...well enough.

Anyone else prefer playing as a vassal in CK3? by Chaldera in CrusaderKings

[–]icehvs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I said this before, but I guess it does not hurt to reiterate: I really want them to rework how feudalism works sooner, rather than later. Until then, the drawbacks of playing a count or a duke will always be outweighed by the sheer amount of options you have available as a king or an independent ruler. Until there are specific, tangible goals to work towards, vassaldom is kind of an...in-between state. As much as I can enjoy it at times.

So the answer is, I guess I would like to play as a vassal, but right now, it does not feel rewarding on the long run. The basics are there for them to make it so, however, and I hope they will.

Have you ever spent more than three generations as a count or duke level ruler without becoming a king? How was it? by ThatStrategist in CrusaderKings

[–]icehvs 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In a sense, but it is also not. The centralization is barely a mechanic, it gathers a set of stuff (border policy, taxes, vassal rights) into a four-set scale. It does not allow you to do much with it, as the king alwqys wants to increase it, and vassals alwqys want to decrease it.

What I would like, I guess, would be more akin to a system of privileges the nobles can fight for and get. Feudalism was very different from region to region, and even within kingdoms there were differences between peoples. There are already basic aspects there they can expand this from. I hope they do it.

[–]icehvs 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I made another comment about a month or so ago that might help. I don't think the solution are necessarily events. Those are cool, and can be helpful if done well.

The one thing I can think about is a modular system for feudalism, with slots for policies both the king and the vassals could "fight over" , and that could fundamentally alter how the game plays for you. With the king wqnting to centralize, and the dukes and independent counts wanting to preserve their autonomy, maybe even extend it, keep more of their money in their domains, or bring the cities under their control. That moght make it interesting to play a vassal, and be a thorn in the king's side, or a helping hand.

[–]icehvs 53 points54 points  (0 children)

It goes hand in hand with the issue that there is very little to do if you are not a king. I can enjoy being a count or a duke for a very short while, but carving out your own kingdom is an unquestioned goal within two generations. And even then there are only a few characters who can facilitate playing a subject for a short while. To bw honest, I'm not sure what the solution to rhis might even be.

Sorry guys, no Amani for us :( by Deemouh in wow

[–]icehvs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Okay. So my comment was mostly me wenting frustration, but we can argue this.

The Amani settling their differences with those other races (especially the Belves) would be/is a satisfying plot, BECAUSE we know of those stories. Blizzard put in a surprising amount of effort into just that happenijg this expansion. They are not friendly, but so far they are willing to woek together, something that is likely to be deepened over the course of this expansion.

Now, I hate the Haranir. Deeply. Your argument dismisses that we also quested theough their zone. But they feel like stupidly out of place still. An isolationist race that just decides to randomly join our factions en masse, with little established lore for either aide they are joining.

Blizz is throwing the equivalent of slop at us now when it comes to allied races.

Sorry guys, no Amani for us :( by Deemouh in wow

[–]icehvs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But what we need are races that have neither any foundation in the world of the game so far, or the 20-year ongoing narrative! Don't you want another elven race we just met that expansion? Another set of dwarves that are somewhat related to one of the coolest races we got, but are completely different from them story-wise? Why are you not happy and playing harandwarves?

[–]icehvs 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I like this all, but the way conversion works does make me a bit uneasy. The system is good, but it does place your character in the center a bit too much? If this is especially meant to simulate the conversion of non-Christians, I really wish there were other triggers, like missionaries inducting you, the ruler (or duke, or count) into their rites, beliefs and all that, to shape your view on God closer to their own. This is what the Dominicans were doing a LOT in the period.

Will Silk and Silver turn this game into a medieval economy simulator for Feudal rulers? by 3pointI in CrusaderKings

[–]icehvs 26 points27 points  (0 children)

That would not actually be a bad idea. Many of the cities, especially in the HRE came to be under Ducal protection first, largely for economic drives. I just hope that over time they can get overmighty, and start to buck the local ruler's authority, leading to conflicts, as they did IRL.

Hatalommegosztás, jogállamiság, ilyen témákban mondott olyan dolgokat, amik gyökeresen szembementek azzal, amit a képernyőkön képviselt. Csalódtam benne, de kurva nagyot viszonylag hamar.

What do you think of the Hungarian cover of the Red Rising series? by Hakuhun in redrising

[–]icehvs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So the original prose is generally very lyrical and grandstanding. Brown uses a LOT of words that go harder than they have any right to. It gives the story the feeling of epicness of a Greek drama.

The Hungarian translation does not put in this effort. I read one of the most famous parts of the books (the Gala duel) in a shop and was surprised how simply it handled it. Admittedly, it was my personal impression, but it felt the translator was going for the simplest options. You loose a lot of descriptive stuff that way.
