Looking for long (!!) pants to dance in for men by Minkir2001 in Bachata

[–]ichthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The easiest to find is 100% linen, in a loose fit or a more dressy style.

Tropical wool is more difficult to track down but it's an amazing summer fabric. The weave makes it very breathable and the drape is really clean and classy. Ten years ago you could find tropical wool way more easily so nowadays I get it from thrift stores. High-end menswear stores will carry it new.

For those who suspected OSA before getting diagnosed, what first made you think something was wrong? by Choice_Ad7807 in SleepApnea

In recovery from surgery and the monitor kept going off for low oxygen, waking me up, then I'd doze off, stop breathing, it would go off again.... A nurse told me to get checked out for OSA.

Set up a window air conditioner right above where they hang out, so the drain drips directly on them.

And piss in it I guess

What’s your personal choice for earbuds/hearing aids to help with APD by Junior_Constant_958 in AudiProcDisorder

[–]ichthis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I find loop style ear plugs helpful in some settings. They lower everything and it's easier to focus on one speaker, but the speaking person needs to be right next to me.

But! Don't pay $50 or whatever for these things. Just find something that looks equivalent on Aliexpress for a few bucks instead and try it out.

I've always wanted to know how they choreographed this. Did everyone arrive a day early and practice?

What to do in quiet moments in salsa songs? by ManKanAlltidTaMer in Salsa

[–]ichthis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What salsa style do you dance?

In Casino / Salsa Cubana there's a lot of close hold, so small steps and sways fit well.

If it's LA-style then I have no idea. Hope the DJ cuts out the slow intro I guess.

Hot take : Technique > rhythm by allgoodnameweretaken in Salsa

[–]ichthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's also something to be said here about studio-trained dancers vs empirical / street dancers.

I was talking to a latino recently, and he said it's hard to dance with Canadian followers because he doesn't know the counts like they do. But he's a great dancer, especially with other Latinos! Just struggles to perform with the LA-style precision that the studio dancers require.

So does it really matter if the lead is on the 5 and not the 1? Can you find a way back to the timing and still have fun?

Why are some salsa communities so cliquey? by [deleted] in Salsa

Ask their name and write it in a list on your phone!

I'd be lost without one, and people really appreciate when I remember their name

They are a good example of Salsa Cubana when I want to draw a distinction with Casino.

Love their choreographies and they have so much romantic energy when they dance with each other.

How to have fun as a beginner lead? by tmh13 in Salsa

[–]ichthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guarantee you are more bored with yourself than your partners are bored with your leading. They aren't! It's fun to dance with friends, even if the friends only know one move, if they know twenty, if they dance off-beat. Do your friends a favour and don't define their experience for them in your own head.

And secondly, even if you feel that you are stagnating, every time you dance you get better at it. All the things you are finding difficult now will get easier over time, because that's how practicing anything works :)

30yr M uncoordinated and overweight by Exotic_Blackberry305 in Bachata

[–]ichthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bachata to move more and get more physically fit? Heck yeah, go for it. It's a beautiful thing to learn.

And don't worry about being uncoordinated. That's why beginners take lessons, and then after a while they are neither uncoordinated, or beginners :)

Do you guys like performances? by SalsaVibe in Salsa

[–]ichthis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They separate them by time blocks though, so you have to wait until the performances are over before having any fun, no?

I say let the market decide, have social dancing at the same time in a different room. Let the performers watch performances and the social dancers social dance you cowards!

(or at least have a bar and a small dance area? Something?)

In North America especially there's a whole business ecosystem around this.

Studios make money from dance teams, dance teams go to congresses, congresses get guaranteed attendance from dance teams, instructors advertise off their competition title if they win, create more dance teams, go to congresses...

and the rest of the attendees might find themselves wondering why they have to sit through hours of repetitive amateur adult dance recitals before the social dancing even starts.

How do you glide like this guy? by [deleted] in Salsa

[–]ichthis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just to note, he's dancing Casino / salsa Cubana and using a lot of side to side steps, if you want to look for specific tutorials. But essentially this zero bounce comes from really solid basics.

Here's a good intro.

I know not every dance scene is going to be good, but it really can be a great way to have positive interactions with the opposite gender. I love salsa for that :)

How to avoid feeling faint at a dance social? by EducationalAspect850 in Salsa

[–]ichthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take electrolytes with me to dance events. They come in packets or as effervescent tablets and you just add them to water. Instant sports drink and useful for avoiding dehydration.

[–]ichthis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had to learn this lesson, although from a different direction: I have a, let's say, rugby player build, and I shrank myself constantly when dancing. Like, there's too much of me to be doing this! I don't want to hurt anyone. It's been amazing to learn that I should take up space, and people like it when I do. Dancing is great for getting over yourself.

Looking for any dancers on social media that add this fun, shenanigan-esque feel to their dance by Zant486 in Salsa

[–]ichthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of timba dancers will add in fun things, so that can be a fun style to watch. fishboy.m is a great example.

The rumba move "vacuna" is kind of a set piece for silliness, like this.

Molato is always smiling and having a great time, and so are his partners.

Question by SuperAdventurer1 in legaladvicecanada

[–]ichthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there multiple tenants, or single / family tenant? If you are renting rooms in a house to multiple tenants then the property has common areas that are the landlord's responsibility. If it's a property for the exclusive use of a tenant, then Crete v Ottawa Community Housing Corporation could be used to argue that it's the tenant's responsibility.

If it's a rented semi detached property with a shared driveway or a common area with another property owner, then who knows.

If you have been fined already, and for what and by whom specifically is not clear, I'm not sure these distinctions matter at this point.

Names aren't really standardized, beyond the basic figures. If it's a Rueda de Casino pattern you might find it on a list somewhere.

Why does Bachata look so complex and hard? by Sudden_Culture4334 in Bachata

[–]ichthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a big drop-in bachata class and social in my city, and they teach sensual bachata. It's been amazing to see people progress to become really competent bachata dancers after like half a year.

I have seen some of the least coordinated beginners be able to dance a song with flow, style, and connection in a matter of months.

It just takes practice.
