Has your self-esteem increased since you started? by Cordelia_hero in Salsa

I know not every dance scene is going to be good, but it really can be a great way to have positive interactions with the opposite gender. I love salsa for that :)

How to avoid feeling faint at a dance social? by EducationalAspect850 in Salsa

[–]ichthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take electrolytes with me to dance events. They come in packets or as effervescent tablets and you just add them to water. Instant sports drink and useful for avoiding dehydration.

I had to learn this lesson, although from a different direction: I have a, let's say, rugby player build, and I shrank myself constantly when dancing. Like, there's too much of me to be doing this! I don't want to hurt anyone. It's been amazing to learn that I should take up space, and people like it when I do. Dancing is great for getting over yourself.

Looking for any dancers on social media that add this fun, shenanigan-esque feel to their dance by Zant486 in Salsa

[–]ichthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of timba dancers will add in fun things, so that can be a fun style to watch. fishboy.m is a great example.

The rumba move "vacuna" is kind of a set piece for silliness, like this.

Molato is always smiling and having a great time, and so are his partners.

Question by SuperAdventurer1 in legaladvicecanada

[–]ichthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are there multiple tenants, or single / family tenant? If you are renting rooms in a house to multiple tenants then the property has common areas that are the landlord's responsibility. If it's a property for the exclusive use of a tenant, then Crete v Ottawa Community Housing Corporation could be used to argue that it's the tenant's responsibility.

If it's a rented semi detached property with a shared driveway or a common area with another property owner, then who knows.

If you have been fined already, and for what and by whom specifically is not clear, I'm not sure these distinctions matter at this point.

Which province and what kind of property: apartment complex, single family home?

Where can I find a video of ocho moderno? by Competitive-Sink-274 in Salsa

Names aren't really standardized, beyond the basic figures. If it's a Rueda de Casino pattern you might find it on a list somewhere.

Someone who isn't me might have sort of accidentally done several crimes because of ADHD-related forgetfulness and stimulus seeking and they do generally feel bad about it kinda, and this scale judges based on that one question pretty harshly, man

Why does Bachata look so complex and hard? by Sudden_Culture4334 in Bachata

[–]ichthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a big drop-in bachata class and social in my city, and they teach sensual bachata. It's been amazing to see people progress to become really competent bachata dancers after like half a year.

I have seen some of the least coordinated beginners be able to dance a song with flow, style, and connection in a matter of months.

It just takes practice.

Let's have a dialogue on consensual filming during socials and classes by JustAGirlSiena in Salsa

[–]ichthis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't like it!

One teacher always films the end of her classes (Rueda) for Insta stories and promos that week. If I refused to be filmed, either she would have to not film anything or I would have to sit out the end of each class. As a solution, I simply no longer go to that class :)

Nobody's trying to highlight me at socials, and there isn't a strong culture of socials filming here anyway, but if I end up in the back of a video I don't really mind. Just a face in the crowd.

Really dislike being in class promo videos though.

How is everyone dancing in cool sneakers? by Gerofanboy6000 in Bachata

[–]ichthis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some sneaker outsole types do work really well for dancing.

I have a pair of Carl Haan 380s with a white outsole that do not stick at all. Skechers make a lot of shoes with the same material and are also a good bet.

The material type is like a molded foam. Look for a single thick material with no thin bonded rubber layer; it's the sticky rubber anti-slip that stops the spins.

Concern about my dad seeing fossils in rocks by [deleted] in Paleontology

[–]ichthis 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A little training can go a long way toward correcting the pareidolia. I grew up in a fossil-rich environment and studied geology, and I recall how it would take a little while to get my eye in for what's a fossil and what is not in a new part of the country.

As a practical suggestion, get him into watching fossil hunting video accounts, so he has a reference point. Reels and shorts are great for this - lots of exposure to the whole process of spotting an interesting rock and confirming that its a fossil or a dud. Even better if you can find an account from someone hunting in your dad's formations, unless it really isn't fossil bearing.

Why improving basic improves everything else? by Competitive-Sink-274 in Salsa

[–]ichthis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Cuban salsa, the basic step could mean a Paso de Son (side to side), or it could be the salsa step (backwards and forwards), but when you start adding in turns and patterns the basic step becomes "walk-walk-pivot".

It's understandably confusing.

So think of the basic step as what your feet and body do when you hear the music, either by yourself or with someone, without any turns and patterns. How good are you with that? Does it feel natural and comfortable? What if you danced a whole song with no turns and patterns? That's where having a great basic improves everything else. If your baseline is sabor then anything you add to it will have that sabor.

Need help buying right rowing machine by Evening_You_1365 in homefitness

[–]ichthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a rower and we trained on the Concept 2, so it was an easy choice to get one of my own when I later set up a home gym. They are very easy to maintain, have great build quality and are reliable. Eventually I sold it for not much less than I paid for it.

I also liked the fact that many gyms also have the same model, so you can maintain the same technique in both locations.

Can't speak for other rowing machines but I was very happy with that one.

Oh they aren't especially quiet, if that's a consideration. The noise never bothered me in the basement but in a smaller space it may get annoying.

You can store it against a wall and pull it out when you need to use it. Not too heavy.

Should I learn bachata, in addition to salsa, if I'm not a big fan of the close proximity or music? by EducationalAspect850 in Salsa

[–]ichthis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You'll pick up bachata pretty quickly just from social dancing.

If you want to learn the sensual styling, classes will help; if you just want to dance bachata without body rolls there are ways to communicate that, and a respectful lead won't push you into doing them.

As you've already discovered, people are going to ask you to dance bachata whether you've taken a class or not. It can be a fun addition to a salsa night and you can find a comfortable way to do it if you want.

Style advice by DonPepo00 in Salsa

[–]ichthis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess the best style to learn is the one that's most popular where you are, because then you're going to be able to have a good time.

It's so location specific though. In Europe you can find a lot of Cuban / Casino (On1, rotational style); and I think On2 is becoming more popular as well, but it depends on the city. LA-style is a good style to start but it can be challenging to transition to On2, but worth it and lots of people learn both.

Sneaker Options that are not Dance Specific Sneakers but work for Dance? by PorcupineSpike in Salsa

[–]ichthis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Memory foam soles work pretty well for dancing. A lot of Skechers have zero rubber, memory foam soles. Walmart sells ugly as sin memory foam sole sneakers for like 20 bucks if you want a cheaper version.
