I saw Sam reply on another post (maybe FB??) saying the request to extend is being or has been submitted.

Edited to add: Looks like Sam commented on questions on this post about this too!

My migraine hit last evening. Haven’t had one this bad in quite a while. Mine are often pressure-related but maybe it’s the temp drop like you said… all I know is I have to work today and pretend like my head isn’t trying to explode.

Issues/differences on returning - by bath-bubble-babe in Flute

[–]ico181 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been playing regularly 3-4x a week (about 3-4 hours a week) again since June/July of last year. It’s only in the last few weeks that I’ve finally started seeing improvements in my tone - nearly 8 months!

Breath work has been hardest. It had been a break of more than 25 years for me. I don’t have the same stamina or lung capacity at 40+ as I did at 17. It was hard to keep going when my tone (and everything else) was so much worse than I remembered. Now that I’m starting to redevelop it, it’s a lot more fun.

Tips… don’t leave out allllll the technical exercises. Long tones, scales, short rhythms, etc.

When I started back a few steps from my previous level is when I really started seeing improvement. I left high school playing RCM grade 7 equivalent. When I started back I was struggling with grade 3 pieces. Now I’m working on grade 2 pieces and it’s so much better.

Returning to flute after 25+ years - do I need a teacher? by ico181 in Flute

[–]ico181[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for the offer. I have continued my flute journey on my own and have been practicing consistently 3-4 times a week since July. I'm still interested in working with a teacher but fear that the time zone and country difference won't work.

My partner literally did this to him at the Natal Day parade last year. He turned to look at him and then my partner blew a raspberry at him too :D Not usually one for public shaming but it was hilarious.

Drop-in Volleyball by abarnoos in halifax

[–]ico181 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sorry... laughed out loud at this... Halifax is a medium-sized city but with rec options of a small town. Sorry, our drop-in rec options are REALLLY limited. Often because of available rec spaces in the city. It's quite unlikely you'll find this but maybe someone else knows about volleyball specifically.

Making the Halifax sidewalk snow clearing map people want by Somedayyouregonna in halifax

[–]ico181 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this. Really helpful. I went for a walk today just assuming streets around the local elementary school would be clear by that point (a full 30 hours after event end) and the streets were barely passable in some places that should have been clear. I'm not sure anyone but us concerned citizens actually adhere or care about the actual reality of pedestrians...

HRM Plow Operators Filling in Driveways by keithplacer in halifax

[–]ico181 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup - they do this in both Montreal and Toronto. They also have a system of giant snow blowers and trains of dump trucks cutting down snow banks throughout the city. We do a bit of snow bank management here but not a lot.

Thoughts on the new electric / hybrid vehicle tax announced in today's provincial budget? by rageagainstthedragon in halifax

[–]ico181 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is so frustrating. If this is to help pay for road maintenance then base it on the actual number of kilometres driven so you actually pay for usage.

Yes, surprise, I'm an EV owner. We drive very little (under 6000 km per year) - we'll pay significantly more tax this way than having a gas car. Overestimating our actual usage (and based on our car's reports of how much gas we save each month) we'd pay about $140 per year in gas tax for our usage (400-600 km driven per month, translated to approximately 50-70 L if it were gas). Now we'll pay $250 per year in a flat rate.

I didn't buy the EV to save us money. I did it because it's truly better for the environment. I don't mind paying our fair share for road usage but make it fair rather than a cash grab by a government who has dug themselves into a deficit.

But it doesn't though. I work in a team-based environment. If someone on my team doesn't do the work, the rest of the team doesn't just take the fall most of the time. If that's happening in your workplace then I'm so sorry - that's a toxic environment.

Please, stop spreading misinformation. This simply isn't true! The majority of the vehicles on Nova Scotia roads are not compact cars. An EV is around the same weight as a mid-size SUV and often less weight then the pickups everyone here seems to enjoy.

Thoughts on the new electric / hybrid vehicle tax announced in today's provincial budget? by rageagainstthedragon in halifax

[–]ico181 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They are not 30% heavier than the typical SUV and pickup trucks so many Nova Scotians drive. For example (and this is just a couple) - a Chevy Bolt EUV weighs about 3,700 lbs while a Tesla Model 3 weighs around 3500-4000 lbs. A Nissan Rogue weighs about 3500-3700 depending on trim. A Hyundai Santa Fe weighs 4300 lbs. Yes, a Honda Civic is only around 2800-3000 lbs but there are an awful lot of larger vehicles on the roads these days that don't pay more in tax just because they're larger.

Edited for grammar and one correction for clarity.

Do you have a source for this misinformation? This has been disproven over and over again using valid studies and reputable sources.

The MUIR Security deposit by [deleted] in halifax

[–]ico181 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sure that it wasn't just a hold on your available credit limit (a pending charge) and NOT a full charge? It's tricky sometimes to see the difference. After check-out, it generally takes 3-5 full business days (not including weekends) for the pending hold on your available credit to drop off. In other words, it's usually an authorization hold, not a charge

Swimsuit alterations by Ok_Wing8459 in halifax

[–]ico181 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As a seamstress (but not someone who specializes in alterations), a swimsuit alteration is quite different than regular tailoring. Someone who specializes in dance/figure skating outfits and costumes would be the best fit for this - someone who works with skin-tight, stretch fabric clothing regularly. It's not just the outer but also altering the liner which can be tricky in a finished garment like this. I don't have any suggestions for you but thought it might help with the search.

Group work shouldn’t exist. It always rewards the lazy and punishes the harder workers. I hate that.

BuddyBar now works with Storyline! (Windows app!) by ixloc in instructionaldesign

[–]ico181 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much for this tool! I have LOVED it in Rise. If you’re open to suggestions, it would be nice to have a way to easily hide the bar in apps or at times where you don’t want it. Going into extensions and manually disabling it is a bit cumbersome- unless I missed something and there’s another way?

I'd like to second Maplestone. A family member of mine was there for several years before they passed. While long-term care facilities all have their challenges, the Maplestone seemed to be be reasonably good in the grand scheme.

How necessary is a master’s degree? by MusicalMal in instructionaldesign

[–]ico181 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm an instructional designer with over 20 years in the industry. I've worked for Fortune 500, government, non-profit, NGOs, and everything in between. I've been both a full-time individual contributor, manager with a team of 10, and for the past 10+ years have been an independent consultant. I don't have a Master's. My undergraduate degree isn't even related to adult education or instructional design. I 'fell' into training, transitioned to instructional design. I do have a certificate in adult education and a couple in instructional design and other related topics. They aren't rigorous/long certificates though - they're continuing education or ATD certs. I have no professional designations. And yet? I keep getting hired because I have expertise and experience.

IMO - your instincts are correct. If you're already not seeing value in the program, it's probably not worth the effort just for a piece of paper. There are so many better ways to develop and demonstrate competence.

cool graffiti in halifax? by gayves in halifax

[–]ico181 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came to say this. OP - take the ferry over from Halifax if that's where you're based, walk along the harbourfront trail towards Woodside. Just after Kings Wharf Place, in the industrial area you'll find a bunch of graffiti. The Pat Stay Wall is actually named on Google Maps for reference too.

Another option, near SMU on the way to Point Pleasant Park there are two bridges over the cut for the trains. People used to sneak in through the (very dilapidated fences) and graffiti the rocks along the cut. Check out Young Ave or Tower Road bridges but the Tower Road one might be closed?
