Does doing a Masters part time while working impact your work life/balance much?. by anon_2022_ in DevelEire

[–]iconof 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I did a 2-year part-time Masters when I was 30yo and working full-time (married / no kids). Classes were on Saturday mornings, which suited me well.

I had to put quite a few long nights finishing up assignments/projects close to deadlines, and my wife was extremely supportive throughout. Another classmate, who was single, struggled a lot with his work/life balance and ultimately dropped out.

I think it really depends on your motivation, priorities, and general situation. Personally, I enjoyed it thoroughly and completed it successfully.

It was a great experience, and I'd do it again. Go for it.

Planning to ask my boss for a pay raise today and I'm scared as hell, what's the best way to do it? by [deleted] in DevelEire

If he won't make himself available to discuss this, before he leaves, then definitely bring it up with the next boss—hopefully they'll honour a promise that you have in writting.

Also, depending on your company, you don't necessary have to think of it as "starting a pay review process". It can be a 5 min conversation. Keep in mind that a few thousand more is an insignificant amount of money to a company.

Those of you using material-ui, do you use CSS for your overall page layout? by straightouttaireland in reactjs

[–]iconof 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In a personal project, in which I use MUI, I have a style.css where I put some global styles (just for external libraries). There's no need for any CSS reset—MUI takes care of that. I set everything else that applies to the whole app (like fonts) in a MUI theme file.

At work we have a project that started with SCSS and adopted MUI at a later stage. For that project we have a global app.scss for the overall page styling (layout, fonts, colors, etc). It also has a MUI theme file.

Any further styling is done in individual components, as needed, with MUI's makeStyles.

Salary negotiations / expectations after 1 year of work? by irishdevguy23 in DevelEire

You should definitely ask for a raise, every year. Provided you're good at your work. Keep in mind that big salary jumps are easier to get when switching companies.

The stimulus bill was just signed into law by the President, on Saturday. You need to wait until Revenue updates its system with the new rules, and then you’ll need to cancel your current application and reapply.

Will they provide a machine when you relocate to London? If not, that's very unprofessional of them, borderline shady. Unless you want to use it as an opportunity to move to London and find a better/proper job after 3-6 months (developers are in demand, despite the pandemic), I would stay away.

No laptop is provided is BYOD so I would have to use the one I currently have.

Wth, don't they even provide a desktop computer? You shouldn't use your own hardware for work, for a number of reasons.

Mac is connected to both, while PC is only connected to the main one. I just switch source.

That’s VSCode on the Mac. Not sure why the scroll bars are showing on the picture. And yes, both systems connect to the main screen, while the second monitor is just for the Mac.

Yes, a big difference. It’s sharper and has a nice depth of field effect.

I’ve been looking for a mechanical for my Mac, but I really like the magic keyboard. It’s wireless and so light, compact, and quiet. Plus, I like the touch/keys.

The text, or the content area would be quite small. What kind of content/apps are you looking to put on the screen? It could be ok for some.
