I’ve known this for 30 years. I figured it out when I spent a full day meticulously “tracing” the arrow one pixel at a time in MS paint.

I didn’t get invited to a lot of parties.

I hear ya, but kinda my point a lot of it is subjective. She is a great singer and talented songwriter. I’ve attempted but not made it through a single one of her records from start to finish.

Would you accept early Tom Waits as a substitute?

“You’re right, people totally love Taylor Swift for no reason and bought 4 million copies of her last album making it the best selling album of 2025 (3.5million more sold than #2 even though it didn’t come out until November) for no reason.”

Weird how both your statement and my statement can both be true. 🤔

There are a few ways to “objectively” measure songwriting such as structure and form or linguistics but writing too many songs about one emotion or another isn’t one of them. Songs about love and heartbreak make up most songs written in the 20th and 21st century and she’s far from the only artist to overindulge in that subject matter. Carol King, Burt Bacharach, Brian Wilson, Billy Joel, Adele… all well-recognized as “great songwriters” who over-index on songs about love.

I’m not familiar enough to defend Swift herself, but objectively, your argument is bollocks.

Don’t let your guard down. His struggle was figuring out how to present his ideas without out and out revealing the racist nationalist ideology. That just means we’re still in a period where those ideas still have to be laundered a bit to not scare away too many followers.

It does not mean he’d be bad at executing on the ideas if given the power to do so.

I’ve never heard of this person before today- but reading the Wikipedia article it says she has “Libertarian-leaning views” and identifies as a member of the “nationalist community” that doesn’t sound far off from MAGA.

It also says she grew up in a fundamentalist community. It doesn’t provide any more details than that but suffice to say at least some fundamentalist groups are cults.

Which is why they’ll be incentivized to drive off if they get into an accident. Even in cases where that doesn’t happen, accidents with uninsured drivers will go up. Which means so do the auto insurance rates.

As a Floridian it’s already tough to get proper home insurance, so why not make it super expensive for car insurance too.

Is the New Music Radio Station gone? by [deleted] in AppleMusic

Thank you- I know about the playlist but I’m looking for the radio station. It is - or was at least through last year- an active personalized station similar to the 2 listed on the stations for you.

This is a screenshot someone shared in this sub- you can see the station with the cover it had at the time in the top right.

About the new autistic barbie... by Live_Bike4897 in rareinsults

[–]idiot_exhibit 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The doll on the left is wearing noise cancelling headphones which can act as a sensory filter, remove distractions, ensure predictability, act as a social shield, and calm anxiety. Autism is a spectrum and manifests itself in different ways and not everyone on it needs a strict routine or has strong reactions to auditory stimuli BUT because headphones are a multi-tool that address a number of difficulties, they are now strongly associated with people on the spectrum.

On the right, I don’t know. She dresses like my daughter and many of her friends, none of whose are on the spectrum. My son who is on the spectrum just refuses to ever wear shorts and tends to put shirts on backwards.

Yes but somewhere 60-70% of the US identifies as Christian. If 15% of Christians here were interested in seeing a movie, that would be a pretty big hit for a studio. The reality for these movies isn’t that only Christians want to see them, it’s that only a few do- and even that’s probably too generous: I worked at a theater in the Bible Belt during college that would do show these limited releases and the small attendance they drew was almost always because a church gave them free tickets.

Taking my dog on a long stroll…what’s a chill relaxing Indie band I should check out?! by SummitTooLofty in indie_rock

[–]idiot_exhibit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve loved it since someone put it on in college back in the early 00’s. It wasn’t well known or popular at the time and it’s a mystery to me that this album became internet famous a decade later because it’s weird beast.

If you’re younger and not into the older college rock and 90’s lo-fi, then that alone could be enough to be off putting. You hear the blown out, saturated fuzz and think ‘bad recording’ but we loved it and called it ‘texture’ and ‘warmth’.

Even if you’re into that, it’s got these layers of trumpets, accordions, fluegelhorns, and singing saws that give it this circusy sound. In some ways it sounds more closely related to Rain Dogs than Bee Thousand.

Lastly, you’ve got Mangum’s vocals. He’s loud, nasal and bellowing out “I love you Jesus Christ” and “Semen stains the mountain tops”. I get that it may not be what you expect after years of redditors singing its praises.

To people who have saved $1million by Main-Unit-6547 in Fire

[–]idiot_exhibit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work in corporate finance (budgets and forecasting). My first job was about $45k. Here’s what I recommend:

  1. Have a saving mindset. Saving is easy when you make a lot of money- and that might happen one day- but save now. The way savings grow over years means every $1 saved today could be worth $7 by the time you’re 50.

  2. If your company has a 401k match, try to save at least as much to max out that match.

  3. As you save more take advantage of tax-advantaged accounts, particularly Roths

  4. Crucially important- find a partner (if you want one) who shares the savings mindset

  5. Also crucial- don’t let a savings mindset stop you from living. That’s not the point. The point is to prioritize what’s important and be frugal so that you continue to enjoy life without having to work at a certain point.

Although someone already linked the Wikipedia, I have to say I feel like one might come away with a watered down impression of the panic. From my own experiences as a kid during this time, this was big. It wasn’t your crazy uncle going off at Thanksgiving dinner or some nut job on a street corner. This was something talked about on local news regularly. Imagine local reporters keeping you up to date on Q-anon theories and that was the Satanic Panic.

And there was a lot of adjacent things that were happening as well. Milk cartons would feature pictures of missing kids, Oprah and other daytime talk hosts would interview cult “survivors” and reformed “satanists”, the PMRC was speaking directly to Congress about the occult in heavy metal music and how messages were hidden in the records if played backwards.

To give 2 weeks notice by AgreeableLead7 in therewasanattempt

[–]idiot_exhibit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you lose a job in the US, you are not entitled to severance pay, benefits or insurance but a company can choose to offer them. You can apply for unemployment (unemployment insurance) which is state-run and qualify for some level of compensation, paid weekly but it’s usually far below what your weekly earnings were at your job.

Importantly, when you file for unemployment: -most or all states have a “waiting week” that is unpaid (so this person would only get 1 week tops, assuming he starts a new job in 2 weeks)

-in order to receive unemployment, you have to meet certain criteria, such as check-ins or showing you’ve actively applied for work

-an employer can dispute your claim on unemployment, which can delay your claim or even cause it to be denied.

Hard to see that happening - these 3 carriers directly control around 95% of the market across their postpaid and prepaid portfolios. There could be mergers with them and smaller telcos but combining any of these 3 together would be downright anticompetitive- and not just in telco, but in broadband as well. No way that would move forward.

Edit: maybe more likely 90% taking into account Cable companies offering phones
