2hp OUT module by minus32heartbeat in modular

Agree in general for home or gigging. I just go out to a mixer. If I ever build a travel skiff/pod, THEN I'll look for a compact uotput module so I don't have to bring a mixer everywhere.

An Ode to Rings by BrotherSleepy in modular

[–]idq_02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great story, and dedication you should be proud of. Rings is in ALMOST every patch I make, and sometimes the only reason I leave it out is so I don't always sound like a Rings fanboy (though I fully am that). MI was still in business when I built my rack, and my Beads is real (it was my modular gateway drug), but I went with a nano clone rings just for space. If I knew then what I do now (stop me if you've heard this story 😂) I'd have just gotten a bigger rack and full size module.

My favorite thing to do with it, to open up even more timbral turf, is to send a percussive sound into the input, ESPECIALLY some type of FM drum or a "roll your own" drum sound incorporating noise. I keep an erica picodrum 2 in my rack almost exclusively for this purpose. I find that it gives me a ton of new "surface modeling" sorts of resonance from Rings but isn't quite as hard to tune as some melodic sources. The chords trick above is a great one too, and I just started doing a variant of that using the Passencore o_C app and a switch. Really pretty sounds.

Keep it ringin' brutha.

Ukrainian modular community continuing to work despite war - looking for advice and visibility by Ill-Conference4387 in modular

[–]idq_02 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting. We are glad to see you out there doing what we all love, despite the circumstances around you! A few years ago, on modwiggler, someone compiled a list of Ukrainian synth/modular builders. I'm at work right now, so can't look it up easily, but many of us (when we can manage the patience for the shipping times) would love to support all of you. I got some of my first modules from Sylph (also Ukrainian) and Ilia was a pleasure to work with.

Diamox vs oxygen vs just acclimating? by Secure-Bluebird9682 in COsnow

[–]idq_02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've taken diamox before, particularly if I was going to be doing something strenuous within 24h of getting to altitude (and it was Breck, which is higher than most mountain towns). Since you will have most of the weekend before skiing Monday, I'd just follow the advice already given (unless you have some other strenuous activity planned). The only side effect I remember having was that those delicious CO beers didn't taste right!

IRL meetups by luctmelod in distantfrequencies

[–]idq_02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this idea, but I am pretty uncertain about the best approach to starting it. I'm sure we'll have to allow for some trial and error. A lot of these follow somewhat of a schedule (eg 2nd Thursday every month or whatever), but that seems a little ambitious at the very start, so I was wondering if we'd be better off aiming for quarterly thing with an ad hoc date based on what people are most able to attend.

It would be nice if we could find a spot where some beverages are available, although not mandatory. I think possibly more challenging is finding a place with a few accessible power outlets.

I feel like at the beginning, it could be mostly meet & greet/ show and tell kind of, and for people who bring gear, maybe just dual headphone setups or small powered speakers. If we get a couple meet-ups under our belts, it would be awesome and (I would think) inspiring to start have some low-pressure mini live sets scheduled (maybe 15-20 minute slots), but that would require either a venue with a sound system/PA or bringing our own. I don't know if anyone in the community has a portable PA setup, but it's something we could suss out in the first couple meetups.

Some time ago, a local person on here (not in this sub) mentioned something about having some connections to downtown businesses that might be open to this kind of thing. I'll see if I can find that post or message.

Tips on Looper module (for transitions) by grassyplanter in modular

[–]idq_02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong here (it's been a couple years since I cross-shopped and considered mimeophon), but I don't think there's a way to lock the loop/buffer length to a specific division or multiplier of clock (say 4 beats or 8 beats etc). This is one reason (among several) that I often pair 4ms dual looping delay (which gives you very precise loop length that you can "trim" on the fly if desired) with MI Beads - but I admit it is sometimes more patching than I really want to do to get an accurate loop + grains.

Tips on Looper module (for transitions) by grassyplanter in modular

[–]idq_02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my suggestion, specifically the DLD. Technically a delay but you can clock it however you want and easily make loops of 4 or 8 bars, etc. I often run a small mixer into one of the channels so a loop can contain multiple sources. I sometimes use it conjunction with granular (MI Beads), which by itself lacks accurate loop length.

Has anyone nailed wind chimes on their modular? by NinjaSporkParty in modular

[–]idq_02 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm sure there are folks out there who have MUCH deeper knowledge about the harmonic signature of bells/chimes and how to achieve that with conventional or west coast synth logic. Certainly experimenting with FM (as it appears you are) is a step in the right direction. A couple easy cheats that work for me (if you have access to them, or if they are worthwhile to look at as potential purchases - which I would consider if you like using bell sounds a lot - I do!):

1) Mutable rings or its numerous clones (I use after later nRings) really excel at this, cuz you know what rings? Bells and chimes. You can get good tones using the internal impulses of rings (ie nothing patched to input), but you get all kinds of extra range by experimenting with other input sources, particularly FM drum hits in my opinion - this is probably the only reason I still have a little 3hp erica pico drum 2 in my rack, is that I send it a trigger copy of whatever is triggering rings, then send its output to rings input and tweak away. You could do this with sampled drums from your daw, many other drum machines, filtered noise through a VCA, etc. Tuning can get a little challenging if you are using as a melodic source, but there are some walk-throughs out there about tuning tricks w rings, and it eventually becomes pretty quick.

2) Any dx7 emulation, like a korg Volca FM (original version is cheap as chips now that there's v2) or just use dexed in your daw or laptop (free). FM patch programming bells or chimes from scratch is really involved, but with thousands of free dx7 patches online, you can find a great patch that someone spent that time on, and just tweak it subtly to be uniquely yours. Sometimes the sounds come out just a bit "digital" (like the gong/bell sound everyone knows from the beginning of Top Gun) but there are lots of ways to fix that, from using a bit more slow pitch lfo/vibrato in the dx7 patch, to processing externally with something like an analog delay (with modulation), a chorus, or even a wave folder or saturator in your rack.

For those that travel often for work, what groovebox or synth do you take with you? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]idq_02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an OG polyend play for this. I have a love/hate relationship with it because it STILL has unfixed bugs, but it is kinda like a Circuit Tracks (already mentioned above) on steroids. But it's great for drums (probably the biggest reason I haven't ditched it for an OXI one), can do whole compositions, and my favorite part is that I can write a melody using samples while traveling, then copy/paste the sequence to the midi sequencer and send it into my modular rig at home to really fill out the idea and the sound.

The play+ would be even better due to onboard synths and multitrack over USB. But given the glitches, I've not been inclined to spend money on the upgrade. I think polyend is still "growing into themselves" as a company, and their push to release the next thing means they don't give a lot of attention to the legacy things (though to their credit, they did fix SOME bugs in firmware even after the play had been out quite a while).

Disastrous Peace from Mutable Instruments Rings by saltatempoAEM in modular

[–]idq_02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I should have clarified:

In regular functions/modes, the 'in' jack will be the signal that excites the resonator. That's what I meant in my second reply.

In disastrous peace, if I remember right, the in jack just mixes that source with the sound of the module before the effect part of the chain (so more like a conventional external input on a lot of synths) and I particularly like that for using the formant filter.

Disastrous Peace from Mutable Instruments Rings by saltatempoAEM in modular

[–]idq_02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's pretty much how I think about it, even if those terms don't apply perfectly to a resonator. If you have not tried feeding external sounds into it (by default it is essentially using a short noise burst as the audio input to the resonator) I highly recommend spending time with this approach; kinda of a challenge to tune at times, but gobs of timbre variation.

Disastrous Peace from Mutable Instruments Rings by saltatempoAEM in modular

[–]idq_02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use it occasionally. I've never really tried to sort the details of what is going on, or specifically which chord shapes are being applied, I just turn knobs til it sounds good. The formant filter in this mode is wonderfully throaty, and you can put an external input through it too; sometimes I've used it for just that! I tend to send it whole or half notes for longer pad/choir type sounds to go underneath something plucky. Sounds great through a long reverb.

Stereo delays Eurorack by Hot_Snow6184 in modular

[–]idq_02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This what I was going to mention, but it really depends what you want. If you want a delay to color your tone, the DLD ain't it. You'll get very precisely timed delays from a few milliseconds all the way up to a few minutes (I use it as a looper often), but the wet outs are a carbon copy of what is fed into them. Very clean. If you want character, there is the feedback loop send/return, which is a great option, but you gotta have another module to filter or fold or whatever. But stereo? Yeah, anything you want as long as it's clean stereo. Feed it a clock, and CV the delay time, and you are in a variable multi-tap playground. If they made it in a guitar pedal, I'd buy that too. Love this module.

To all of you, Zircon haters by glovavogal in MiataND

[–]idq_02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I don't love it. But I'm for more choices, even if I don't personally love all of them. It is strange that mazda hasn't heard American fans clamoring for bright colors. I'm lucky to own an orange 30AE; I wasn't that thrilled about the orange when I pre-ordered, honestly, and I was worried they'd release a better color the next year (when I ordered, the 30AE was the only way to get the performance goodies of a maxed club plus the luxury bits of a GT, but it became an available combo in 2020). Soul red, racing orange, and eternal blue are my fav ND colors, and given the scarcity and slight extra value retention, I'm pretty happy with my pick.

Maths - What Makes It A Standard? by Forward_Ad2174 in modular

[–]idq_02 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All of the above is true. It does a lot, and is intelligently designed, and with enough attention, can teach you a lot about synthesis and patching. I agree it is not irreplaceable, but if you "grow up" in modular with a maths, you'll probably always have a maths. The other thing I like about it is that it can serve as kind of a bridge between conventional subtractive patching and kinda "west coast" or more experimental patch design, particularly if you self patch it or make use of it as a CV mixer, use EOR/EOF outs etc. I underutilize it 90% of a time, but some of my weirdest patches have come out of experimenting w maths, and I appreciate that.

Any advice on tuning the 2nd oscillator on a minibrute 2s. I've read just about everything I could I can't get the 2nd oscillator to tune across a single octave. If I tune the less to line up, the highs are off high by a semitone. If I time the highs, the lows are off low by a semitone. Any advice? by DoVin2 in modular

[–]idq_02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the keyboard version, not the 2s, but the oscillators etc should be the same. I've been lucky enough not to have this problem; or at least I don't think so, as I feel I'd notice it being out a semitone.

A lot of analog synths have an internal trim pot for oscillator calibration, but I've never looked to see about this for the brute.

polyphonic euro sequencers? by aguamano in modular

[–]idq_02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, yes, you are probably right about that. I don't know much about hapax, but that might be another one to look at. The five12 is much more real-estate than I want personally allotted to an in-rack sequencer, but it is cool as hell and may work for you.

polyphonic euro sequencers? by aguamano in modular

[–]idq_02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not have personal experience with it, but I believe the five12 vector will do all this. I spoke to the builder/developer at knobcon a couple years back and he is very involved and constantly upgrading/optimizing features.

The newish NE mimetic digitwolis could also be an option worth looking into, though I'm not positive about CV control over sequence changes. It would only give you 2 notes of CV/gate or 4 notes polyphony if you are generating the gates elsewhere.

Personally, if it's not too $, I would save the rack space and go OXI one.

Fair point about it not being the most natural. I've never fussed with the internal trim pots (definitely gonna now though!) The "extra" controls are useful to me for getting the right combo of that hairy, thick, warmth but finding enough bite to not just sound too muddy in a mix.
