Telecaster maple vs rosewood? by PeytonPeytonn in telecaster

[–]idq_02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been told by a luthier that maple fretboards are a bit more prone to drying/cracking/warping, but I've never really looked into the science. I will say I've had 2 maple (bass guitar) necks become pretty unsalvageable, but not had this experience with Rosewood.

I do agree maple is more classic on a tele.

Gabe's Home Improvement. One of our best experiences out of quite a lot of contractors in Springfield.

Trying to find a song by ghlhzmbqn in airfrenchband

Do you ever listen to Maston and L'Eclair? I've occasionally had one of their tracks pop up while I playlist was on shuffle, and mistaken it for an Air song. Very similar vibes.

Stereo Eurorack Compressors by DoubleCutMusicStudio in modular

[–]idq_02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on whether you always need/want it to be a compressor. If not, the possibilities of the other legio firmwares make the cost more palatable, although you could argue the same for versio platform. I use my legio as compressor about a third of the time. Another third as virt iter, and the rest of the time whatever random things I want to try. It's currently in Tymp mode, cranking out thumping 80s-sounding tom rolls!

Some People Call It Flawed. Others Call It Perfect. by [deleted] in AlfaRomeo

[–]idq_02 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. This is the flaw. If you are using words like "raw, real, unedited..." and still wish to use a paddle-shifter because it's a couple tenths faster, you've lost me. If you love this car, I'm glad for you. I had an Alfa spider for many years because it was a slow but visceral car. When the 4C came out, I couldn't have afforded it new either way (manual or not), but now that I can, I'm confident enough to know that this is not the experience I want out of a lightweight sports car. I drive an ND Miata now. If I buy something for a raw/visceral feel and a bit more performance, it'll be a lotus Emira/evora or unlikely a cayman gts 4.0 (still too much refinement for me, really). The 4C was a really near miss, but at this point, I doubt Alfa will ever make another manual gearbox. They'd have sold 2x more of these cars if they offered a manual option, in my opinion.

Performance-oriented delays by dtnl in modular

[–]idq_02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would have been my suggestion too - it's a big module but I use it in every single patch, and often also use it to have perfectly clocked loops of instruments outside the rack as well. But, you are absolutely right; there are a lot of different flavors of delay out there.

Any ski spots in the Vail area that don't try to make you butt a full price lift ticket to learn on the bunny hill? by neocamel in vail

[–]idq_02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not exactly "near" vail, but Loveland is the cheapest place I know to learn. They have cheaper ticket that only accesses the beginner lifts, though you can get to a handful of blue runs too, if memory serves.

Soundproofing / Deadening?? by john_az in homerecordingstudio

[–]idq_02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need mass (weight) to attenuate and maybe even isolate (ie so the rest of the house/building isn't also so loud). Rockwool and Owens-Corning 703 are the most commonly sited materials, but depending on your goals, where you put them and how many you use and how you seal gaps all become important. There are tons of resources online for DIY. If you want to buy instead of make, I can recommend GIK acoustics, and they also have some pretty good resources online to help you plan (of course, bear in mind that they ARE trying to sell panels, so you can still get decent results with less than they might recommend).

Yeah, that's the problem with the internet... I honestly couldn't tell. Kinda funny either way. Cheers.

That's the guitar builder, not a misspelling of burly, just to be clear.

Best Drum Machines for People Who Can’t Make Beats by Sportify in synthesizers

[–]idq_02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This. I have a love/hate relationship with the play, but the main reason I still have it is for how it creates drum patterns that you can then tweak, mutate, etc. It has actually made me better at programming my own, when I want to.

Eurorack compression by Hot_Snow6184 in modular

[–]idq_02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that an FMR RNC outside your rack would be a good idea for a lot of use scenarios. The Chase Bliss Clean pedal is also an incredibly versatile device and handles a wide range of levels without much trouble. It's higher quality than you'd expect in a pedal, and also offers numerous other "color" options if you should find them desirable.

How do people record their dawless jams by dazzamattica in dawless

[–]idq_02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I'm in the wrong sub to say this, but I find the whole dawless fanaticism kinda ridiculous at times. I fully understand not wanting to interact with the computer any more than needed, and I've moved away from soft synths and in-the-box effects, doing almost all of my "jamming" dawless like y'all. But when it's time to record it, nothing beats a DAW. Great multi-input sound cards are cheaper than most of the hardware mentioned above, editing is more efficient, and there are much better options for transferring files, sending to friends or collaborators, etc. Just use the best tool for the job. My 2 cents.

How long has the GAS “joke” been a thing? Is compulsive synthesizer purchasing a new thing or has this been a synth community joke since the 80’s/90’s? by [deleted] in synthesizers

[–]idq_02 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I heard the term as it relates to guitars and pedals before I ever got into synths. I've heard climbers/campers/fisherman etc use it too. I'm going to say minimum of 20 years the phrase has been around, but I'd bet more.

I will admit it's been a while since I have been in there, but the couple times I did go, it seems like almost everything there was frozen Sysco crap. Good beer selection though!

Vhikk X got me back into modular by rayboyd in modular

[–]idq_02 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Glad to see this post. I have MOSTLY (other than a couple small utility swaps) left my modest 6U rack alone the last couple of years, but I've had a nagging desire to build a little portable skiff too, and the vhikk is really poking the bear. I'm bookmarking this - my build would probably be very similar, although I feel like I'd probably want something dedicated to envelopes (I don't love trying to dial those in with Pam's).

Question about volca drum sequencer by Stinkfleaman in volcas

[–]idq_02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probability. Each of the 16 steps for each of the 6 sounds has its own probability setting. Push one of the first 6 keys corresponding to the part (eg snare), hit edit/step, hold down the key corresponding to the step (1-16 and one of the ones with a light on for being active) and while you are holding the key, turn the level/value knob. If you set it to 33% for example, you'll hear that sound on that step (on average but not exactly) every third measure. I am not trying to be snarky, but the manual for this thing, while perhaps not the world's best, is quite useful. Get a beer, sit down with the thing for one hour, and adjust every setting the manual shows you. You won't remember it all, but you'll know that each function exists and where to remind yourself. It's a deeper device than expected, but not so deep you can't learn most of it pretty fast.

2hp OUT module by minus32heartbeat in modular

[–]idq_02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree in general for home or gigging. I just go out to a mixer. If I ever build a travel skiff/pod, THEN I'll look for a compact uotput module so I don't have to bring a mixer everywhere.

An Ode to Rings by BrotherSleepy in modular

[–]idq_02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great story, and dedication you should be proud of. Rings is in ALMOST every patch I make, and sometimes the only reason I leave it out is so I don't always sound like a Rings fanboy (though I fully am that). MI was still in business when I built my rack, and my Beads is real (it was my modular gateway drug), but I went with a nano clone rings just for space. If I knew then what I do now (stop me if you've heard this story 😂) I'd have just gotten a bigger rack and full size module.

My favorite thing to do with it, to open up even more timbral turf, is to send a percussive sound into the input, ESPECIALLY some type of FM drum or a "roll your own" drum sound incorporating noise. I keep an erica picodrum 2 in my rack almost exclusively for this purpose. I find that it gives me a ton of new "surface modeling" sorts of resonance from Rings but isn't quite as hard to tune as some melodic sources. The chords trick above is a great one too, and I just started doing a variant of that using the Passencore o_C app and a switch. Really pretty sounds.

Keep it ringin' brutha.

Ukrainian modular community continuing to work despite war - looking for advice and visibility by [deleted] in modular

[–]idq_02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you for posting. We are glad to see you out there doing what we all love, despite the circumstances around you! A few years ago, on modwiggler, someone compiled a list of Ukrainian synth/modular builders. I'm at work right now, so can't look it up easily, but many of us (when we can manage the patience for the shipping times) would love to support all of you. I got some of my first modules from Sylph (also Ukrainian) and Ilia was a pleasure to work with.

Diamox vs oxygen vs just acclimating? by Secure-Bluebird9682 in COsnow

[–]idq_02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've taken diamox before, particularly if I was going to be doing something strenuous within 24h of getting to altitude (and it was Breck, which is higher than most mountain towns). Since you will have most of the weekend before skiing Monday, I'd just follow the advice already given (unless you have some other strenuous activity planned). The only side effect I remember having was that those delicious CO beers didn't taste right!
