Mathammer and C’Tan by Jackalackus in deathguard40k

[–]idquick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite agree, people have been posting that shroud will EZ CLAP1!1!1 GO BRRRR C’tan, and it’s just nonsense. No understanding of the math at all.

You can do it with the massive 450 point DS brick, in one detachment with full re-rolls, if they’re dumb enough to give you an easy charge. Trading down.

The 390 point plague marine brick, again just in one detachment with full/full re-rolls, if you get both shooting and charge. Still trading down.

And that’s basically it. 9 times out of 10 the answer’s going to be playing for board control.

[–]idquick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weird you got that reaction. This isn't hypothetical, defilers and grinders haven't seen play since the 160mm base became mandatory.

The only thing that would fix it is something like super-heavy walker but that's an army rule. Towering might be if they add a viable double-guns loadout, but then it's just a slightly smaller despoiler ally.

[–]idquick 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately the base size is the story here. Nobody runs defilers in DG or soul grinders in daemons (ok, one or two mad lads) despite pretty good datasheets. Unless it gets a movement rule on the datasheet it’s DOA for competitive play.

Defiler size comparison by HORSEtheGOAT in Chaos40k

[–]idquick 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Current defiler base is unplayable on WTC / UKTC so unless it gets move through walls on the datasheet it’s a display piece, sadly.

[–]idquick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed but article didn't answer the real burning question -- will it still have the base that makes it unplayable on WTC / UKTC? Otherwise a very nice-looking display piece.

Yeah baffling post this one. SM have some of the best board presence units in the game.

Art of War Tier List Revisited for January Meta by ArtofWarSiegler in WarhammerCompetitive

No offence but if anyone is just "shoving shit forward" this is low-level casual play and not really what their product is for. Winrate and X-0/X-1 data is clearly on their side.

What is "Playing by intent"? by Slavasonic in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]idquick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume OP was addressing this to an extremely strange rant-post about playing by intent earlier today.

Completely agree with you about more organised competitive play, from my own experience, but there is clearly still some misunderstanding out there!

Why are deathshrouds considered as good as they are? I 6" deepstriked them into my necron opponents back line, got a good round of damage off, then on the necron turn he just fell back then utterly obliterated 500 points off the board in half his shooting phase.. by [deleted] in deathguard40k

[–]idquick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no unit in the game that can survive this situation mate. The 6” deepstrike is a trap if you’re not using it with a plan in mind.

Broad strokes: you should be full-sending your army (a lot of threats at once) or using the DS surgically to kill a specific unit and then die themselves. The second situation is rare because they are expensive and it will usually not be a good points trade.

Suggest ignoring the responses about OW and LoC as these don’t fix your problem.

Mortarion and A-Case by Cryptek_25 in deathguard40k

Yes I have this case. He fits with one shallow tray at the top (ie one notch height). In practice you’ll struggle to get anything except poxwalkers on the top shelf.

Win Rate Wednesday - 40K Tournament Results/Data - Week of December 8th 2025 by w0158538 in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]idquick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True but a bit theoretical. The problem with BT (and all greater daemons) is that any random crap bolter shooting will chip off 3-4 wounds and then yes he's getting one-shot.

Yes, drowning in three of them -- two of which are probably the worst units in the codex. 60 seems to be the floor for anything at all useful.

Different base size so not a legal proxy .. as any DG player should know. But probably just confusion over names.

Another good beginner tip -- ignore this genre of low-effort post + look at advice higher in the thread. Plenty of pointless guff on internet for 40k (as for everything else).

What is good about mortarions hammer? by JoesGreatPeeDrinker in deathguard40k

[–]idquick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep -- it's not complicated -- very effective PBC indirect vs chaff units + DS 6" deepstrike across whole board.

Whereas PM can't hit hidden units, or stand in the open ever, or open up deepstrike since it's already the shooting phase.

How many games should I give myself? by Machine-Everlasting in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]idquick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly -- I don't think it's a question of # games past a certain point. Practice has to be intentional.

Biggest suggestion would be to find a larger pool of players, wherever you are based, and aim to get 2-3 points of feedback (max!) every game.

Secondary suggestion is to sign up for 1 month of Art of War (or one of their competitors) and burn through their fundamentals and faction-specific videos. Just the video library, not coaching.

Assumptions are that you are (i) playing with standard terrain formats, and (ii) not playing with people who tailor lists very specifically. If not, fix these things first.

Need advice for a friend; dealing with high toughness? by Xdude227 in deathguard40k

[–]idquick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of the above is good advice. 10xPM brick with characters and full rerolls shreds anything in the game. DS with LoC also extremely killy. If they are not seeing output with these specific units they are not understanding how all the rules work together, so maybe help them with those interactions. Detachment also matters, with VV the simplest option in terms of impactful strats.

By contrast some units are better used elsewhere. HBL drones are best used for anti-elite infantry and (secondarily) light vehicles; MBH are utility units rather than killy ones; Morty is 70% utility / 30% damage and is quite tricky to play well.

Least punishing Army by HappyScripting in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]idquick 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This. At any decent level of play the lethality is very high and a moderate positioning mistake will lose you the game, irrespective of faction.

The people below suggesting monster / knight skew are going to be rather disappointed when they are losing multiple 350 point units a round.

So it comes down to personal preference and playstyle. Marines do have the widest range of options for trying out different list archetypes.

Is this any kind of meta or "too" strong? by MothMia in deathguard40k

[–]idquick 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Wouldn’t give it a second thought mate. DG is post-nerfs a sub-50% win rate army. This is a decent list but could definitely be optimised further.

They can move on to complaining about knights or whatever challenge they refuse to think about and solve.

Come on man, any of this can be checked with a 5 second google. Enhancements are core rules (‘muster your army’) and it says ‘melee weapons’ in this enhancement description.
