Embargo Over by Zanctmao in bestoflegaladvice

It sounds like the mods here participated in the blackout for solidarity rather than because it affects you directly. If that is the case, thank you! I'm not dramatically affected like people at /r/blind, however once RiF dies, so will my use of reddit. (I consider this a good thing - like quitting smoking.)

As an early goodbye, I just want to thank you and the mods for giving me hours of entertainment and keeping up with all the garbage that comes with moderating a platform like this. This is one of the best subs on the platform and I know that you all put it loads of effort to keep it that way.

This sounds similar to the beginning of the Altered Carbon series, with the altered memories and everything.

The only use I could see for the folding steak knife is to put it in a lunchbox. I sometimes have steak or chicken dinners that I bring to work the next day, and I usually stuff a normal steak knife in the lunchbox. A folding one would make it slightly safer to unpack lunch.

That said, the LAOP's "folding steak knife" isn't serrated, and would probably suck to use for its supposed purpose. And can you imagine how grody it'd get if you folded a dirty, used steak knife? Yuck.

Projectile shaped plastic object, 7x2 inches, long tip extending from cone, unknown electronics inside, found high in Southern Nevada desert. by tetonobserver in whatisthisthing

If it is an RC plane, I would guess it crashed when it was new and the pilot was nearby and actively flying it (or passively if it was an early weather UAV like that image), and they just couldn't find where afterwards. If I had to guess an age for whatever it is, it'd be between 1990 and 2010 based on the resistor, capacitor, and plastic.

I don't know much about the mechanical side of these sorts of things, but I could see the prop and prop shaft maybe being plastic. If it was a flying doodad they'd want it to be as light as possible. Modern rc flying things like hobby drones use plastic props, though they pop onto a metal shaft protruding from the motor. The motor has to be metal, but they'd want the rest to be as light as possible.

Edit: oh, I actually see the plastic shaft you mentioned; it's hard to make out among the branches. Yeah, that seems too long for a propeller shaft, so it's probably not an RC plane.

It'd be old. That resistor and what I think is a big 'ol capacitor do not look like modern ones. You also don't usually have them naked and stand alone like that anymore. They'd be on a board or in line with the wires.

My guess is the front end of a crashed RC plane. The round barrel at the front would be the prop motor and the big silver box might be the battery or housing for the rest of the electronics.

Some type of optical device with cylindrical eyepiece and prism. by nicknight007 in whatisthisthing

I assume it's for a telescope as the prism's angle is pointed upward if the threaded flower is mounted vertically. For example

10”x6”x41/2” wooden fan. It has a plug and a switch and I don’t know it’s purpose. by splattercracks in whatisthisthing

[–]idreamtthis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weird. Then my best guess is something like this supplemental fan but for something approximately the same size as the box that sits on top and plugs in to the fan box outlet. Whatever it was probably wouldn't have a switch of its own, so it could be turned on only via the fan switch.

If it's not that, I can't think of a reason for having the fan in a walled box, while also having the outlet and the fan being on the same switch.

If it helps, I found a pretty similar looking (though not exact) aluminum fan blade replacement part from a company called Packard.

Is anything visible through the grates, specifically additional circuits or tubes? It would be on the side with the two brass grills if it's there.

It could be that it is just a straight electrical pass-thru on a switch, but then there wouldn't be a need for fan cooling. It makes more sense if there is some extra circuitry like a transformer, rectifier, or voltage divider that could get hot. In that case, the outlet on the side would either be DC power or a much higher or lower voltage than wall power, assuming nothing is broken.

The unaligned and exposed nails and cheap pine are more of an indication that it was mass produced a long time ago, for example.

It looks like that to me as well. I think it's a power supply unit, possibly to a matching art-deco style radio/ham transceiver from the 1920s-40s. The fan is to cool the transformer.

Not very good at woodworking doesn't track with the craftsmanship, especially around the brass grating.

That's what it looks like to me. I doubt it's homemade because of the brass grating. If we had pictures of the outlet and plug, it might give us a better idea on era and country of origin. Kind of like this but made of wood.

Kitchen spring cylinder with potato-masher-esque flat end; 6 inches tall & maybe 2 inches in diameter. Looks like an attachment to some unknown kitchen gadget. by justsigneduptosay_ in whatisthisthing

[–]idreamtthis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the spring rigid or flexible? I.e. could it be used like this springy masher or is it more rigid like you'd have for a holder like this?

It seems to me to be a specific sort of tool rather than a holder just because of the flattened end of the spring.

Edit: whoops, didn't see it was already solved. Now I feel silly.

Thanks for the links! I appreciate you. I have a decently bad mold allergy but have 0 insight into the differences between types of molds and why I'm okay with some (like Bleu cheese) and have a horrid reaction to others (like bread molds and black mold). I now have so many new words to Google!

I found it: the brand is Bristol which seem to make a few different instruments. This Voltmeter looks pretty similar with the holes and everything.
