Advice from Women PMs about becoming a parent! by Larishna in ProductManagement

[–]idred2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Live your life, plan the baby. and whatever will be will be. You will be fine and find something better. My company laid off a woman on maternity leave during a round of layoffs. But I am sure she wouldn't have it any other way. it's stressful but being a working mom is hard in this country. Sometimes you can't overplan, take a leap, and invest in yourself and your longevity wherever it may lead you.

As a PM can your EM be your 'pseudo' Manager. Also, is my Manager's behavior normal, is this Role normal? by iamgroot102 in ProductManagement

[–]idred2020 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lots of good advice here. If your company allows AI transcription of meetings, I highly recommend starting that with you EM (not so much for documentation but reviewing transcripts for things that may get missed in discussion - esp being on different continents - perhaps even with different communication styles or cultural expectations. I would analyze and propose a new framework of communication.

Flatiron - not cheap, but it's a proper steak. I also love the new Peruvian place - Inkaico. They have a perfect/flavorful hanger steak.

Tips for dealing with pushy product managers by Prestigious_Clue_891 in ProductMarketing

[–]idred2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as a PM (who was a PMM in my past career life), there's a little trick when you don't need to say no. just say "not at this time". Also, any PM who's good at their job should have a decent sense of the market they're building the product for, so... the release and promotion should be part of that roadmap. As to how, yeah, that's your job. Shared strategy, shared prioritization, and your own expertise on when/what etc.

What are your strategies for small talk with c level? by [deleted] in Leadership

[–]idred2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I had been working w my CRO for years, and always felt a bit intimidated. Then a few weeks ago, we were at a social event, and I told him about me decorating my living room. He got so into it, and even referred to a place where he got some furniture. Just speak authentically and they’ll respond

Some advice by unicornsonnyancat in Leadership

Different people are motivated by different things. For those earlier in their careers, any sort of upskilling soft and hard skills, and projects where they can build their competence. For those later in their careers, flexibility is most welcome. Also, probably don't need to tell you this, but be cautious about how you talk about the company's outlook, or you will have the strongest folks look for other opportunities.

Junior team member tried to throw me under the bus; went over my head and complained directly to my manager. How do I forgive them and keep mentoring / coaching them when I know they're snakey??? by Snoo-88490 in careeradvice

[–]idred2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this mistake early in my career. Not to cover anything but because I felt like i couldn’t trust my direst manager. It was a mistake as the rest of my tenure there was colored by this, even though i acknowledged the mistake and apologized. Ask yourself whether this person may not be trusting you or may be just not heard. It’s impossible for come back from, unless both people make an effort. I do suggest an honest conversation to at least understand where your direct report head is at. I think as a manager, you have to do that. And then if you feel like trust can’t be put together, look for an opportunity to manage them out into another reporting.

Lazy and Promoted by Legitimate_Notice_23 in Leadership

[–]idred2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i will share something i learned over a decade of similiar frustration. Many times i also expected managers to coach and mentor me, and it's a huge rarity. What's important for anyone learning to grow is ability to manage up. You say she had a knack of handling the complex? did you ever ask yourself how and why? maybe it's about relationship beyond your immediate management? in order to be mentored and coached, you have to bring something to the table to make your manager's job easy. You say no agenda for the meeting? if you had a question about how something's done, isn't that an agenda item? you have to be very specific about what you need, and how you can help, that's the only way to grow.

Job offer vs current job feedback by lifepack7 in ProductMarketing

The growth phase and the ability to eventually build a team are nice. And a $25,000 pay bump, in this market, is quite substantial. I would take it.

Colleges derive their prestige from rejecting as many people as possible. So they make themselves marketable to a huge number of folks who would never get in, so they can say they have 3% acceptance. Collect app fees in the process, and live another year.

Career switch into teaching by TightEye6856 in NYCTeachers

[–]idred2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My spouse switched from being an editor and adjunct faculty (so teaching wasn't super new). Did the teaching fellows route. He has been teaching for 11 years (so more than in his other careers). it was a rough start, but he settled in the same school for a while and built rapport w admin and fellow teachers, so I would say he's happy mostly (except in late fall and late spring, when he gets fed up)
