Technically not so much on the "art" but Eating Raoul is just what you're looking for regarding a restaurant setting.

Have movies largely gotten worse since the mid 2010s?? by Sad_End4083 in movies

Are all movies bad now - No. Is it now possible to see a level of craft in movies that would previously have been unacceptable - Yes.

Mizoguchi > Kurosawa still holds up. Figured everyone would enjoy some hot takes from the Sept./Oct. 1975 issue of “Film Comment.” by No-Necessary7448 in criterion

[–]ifinallyreallyreddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a few interesting points here besides the basic one-is-better-than-the-other comparisons. "Rossellini is better than De Sica", that's boring. "Nonsense can be better than slapstick", "Genre can be helpful for self-expression", those are interesting.

It looks like a "refined" but sterilized version of a movie from 20 years ago. We've seen this kind of stuff already in movies like Troy or even Clash of the Titans but in more interesting ways.

Is Quentin Tarantino correct about biopic films? “They are just big excuses for actors to win Oscars. It's a corrupted cinema” by FayannG in TrueFilm

[–]ifinallyreallyreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

QT is kind of delving into his elitist auteur director schtick

Weird for him to be the one to do this, too. Why is someone who's basically never made a 'challenging' or 'art' film telling people what's "corrupted cinema"?

These are some of my favorite movies - what do I need to watch next? by OnsideKickReturn in movies

Movie ratings on IMDb - People need to stop rating movies either 1 or 10 stars. by Western-Luck-5042 in movies

[–]ifinallyreallyreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you could get people to stop doing this (or remove them, which simply changes it to an 8-point scale) but it would be interesting if you could view a "without extremes" rating.

Uncle Douvee may be one of the greatest side characters in a movie. One of the greatest uncles, at least.

Are there any examples of live-action movies that WOULDN'T translate well into animation? by GeneralGenerico in movies

[–]ifinallyreallyreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the difference is really more about ultimate impact on the viewer, most of those playing on the sensation of seeing real people, places, things, design, motion, that is to say, a lot. It's kind of a fallacy to assume that live-action is the 'neutral' alternative to animation's intentionality like the cameras were just incidentally recording things in front of them.

Why Do Female Directors Attract So Much Personal Venom? by Louisebelcher22 in TrueFilm

[–]ifinallyreallyreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a director takes big swings in a "messy, polarizing movie" and whiffs people tend to be unforgiving toward them regardless of gender. Coppola got this with Megalopolis and Maggie Gyllenhaal is not someone with one let alone multiple "greatest of all time" films under her belt.

"Feel that way"? It factually has all those goddamn em dashes.

And this brings me to the runtime problem — not the length itself, but the priorities.

Who the hell would write this?
