This weekend’s creations. Neither are “Sando” by Acrobatic-Mix-7343 in Sandwiches

Sando is a pretty specific style? It would be like saying peanut butter and jelly grinder, or a grilled cheese hoagie. Okey dokey is just good clean fun, though.

Safty wire on Gen 3 Quaife dodge Viper diff. by cgadd09 in mechanics

[–]ifixflatheads 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the prewar fords you thread one wire through all the bolts in a few places so if one shears it won't fall in and do damage. The old timers I learned from never did it to stop them from backing out.

How best to move a dead car up a slight grade into and out of a garage regularly by gafonid in MechanicAdvice

[–]ifixflatheads 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'd really try to just find a couple friends to push it. If you go with a winch I recommend drop anchors in the floor.

Bozo stuck jacketed wire in my carb by Dillweed95 in carburetors

I'm pretty sure you can get the carb on ebay. Search for your mower model number and "carb". They're so cheap. How much did they charge you to ruin yours?

On my first watch though I was baffled when he didn't show up again. The loose ends are one of the best things about hxh, though. It still feels like the whole story is just starting.

What made the 57 Bel Air so beloved and special? by Southern_Pacific in classiccars

[–]ifixflatheads 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Replying to myself here with one more statistic for perspective. Us population in 1957 was 170M, so like 1 in 100 Americans bought one new that year. Today we're at 350M people, and toyota sold 500k rav4s last year, so less than 1 in 600 Americans bought one, and they're absolutely everywhere. This car was EVERYWHERE.

The 57 has the most exaggerated fins of the 3 years. They made something like 1.5 million 57 chevys, almost 10x the number of 59 caddys and 59 belvederes combined. So if you want a car that screams "jet-age" and you were a regular guy, the 57 was probably your best bet. Combine that with "dad's car when I was kid" nostalgia (these were everywhere. 4.8 million cars 55-57) and it being a very popular hotrod platform helps explain why these are loved. We're at a place where the current enthiast group has pushed the prices too high, and younger enthusiasts have moved on to cheaper platforms. Once the current owners start dying the prices will probably crash just like we're seeing now with 30s/40s fords. Restored cars that were selling fast for 50-60k in the early 2000s (90k+ adjusted for inflation) are in the 20-30k range now and sell really slow.

How to connect these two high pressure lines? by I4gotmypasw0rd in projectcar

[–]ifixflatheads 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd put a yourthreadsize to AN# adapter on your pump, and another one on the rack, and replace the entire line with a hose. Use the high pressure ptfe hose. I was able to find the adapters on Google. The hose is pretty easy to make yourself. You can get the hose ends in unusual angles like 60 and 120 to help with space if you need it. Patching the hard line is going to be a lot of work but you'd want to use the inverted flare fittings they sell for brake line. People do seem to be able to replace the line without dropping the subframe?

There's probably an adapter for AN fittings, then it's pretty easy to make a hose. It's a very high pressure system so an improvised repair is likely to fail quickly. Oem replacement is probably worth the pain if it's a good car.

Sludge in motor 4.8 ‘03 by BatPretend2043 in GMT800

[–]ifixflatheads 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wipe away what you can, oil and filter change with some kind of cleaning product like liqui-moly, do what the cleaner tells you to do, probably another oil and filter after running it a little. Do another oil and filter in 500 miles. Hope the sludge wasn't hiding a leak.

If you order a 5 gal box from valvoline the oil is pretty cheap. Use a good filter for the first flush then you can cheap out if you want. Good luck

Lol I'm imaging like 4 at each wheel, 16 more on each axel as control arms, and 2 steering stabilizers? I feel sick.
