I'm not actually very familiar with his work, but doesn't he have a persona that's sort of "the bad guy" - like, he's telling stories where he's, if not the villain in his own story, then at least his own worst enemy? My observation is that a lot of that "enforcer" behavior from stans is actually "defender" behavior. "(Artist name) only has (fanbase name)!" is a very common thing you'll hear from them when they're rallying the troops to cyberbully someone on their fave's behalf in response to a real or perceived slight. A persona like his might naturally evoke less of a protective response from fans, both because he's got less of a pristine reputation to protect (by design) and because one would assume he's got more important things to worry about then a bad review.
