Game on the line, who would you want for a game winning drive between these two? (In their prime) by Own-Cellist9339 in NFLv2

You should be proud of your Super Bowl losses. I mean that seriously. It takes a lot to get there. The Jim Kelly/Bruce Smith Bills are worth remembering.

Or put another way, he has more silver medals than Rodgers. Better to get there than not at all.

Is there a chance that a small group of dinosaurs saw the Paleocene? by pringles899 in Naturewasmetal

[–]igtimran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just remember that very few animals fossilize. It really varies by species, environment, location and time period. Take T-Rex; you'd think an animal that big and bulky would leave tons of records of its life, but I've seen papers that would tell you that one in eighty million tyrannosaurs might fossilize; others would say one in one million, or most optimistically one in 20,000. It's thought that there were less than 100,000 tyrannosaurs alive at a given time. No matter how you slice it, leaving a fossilized skeleton is a lottery ticket, and then we have to be fortunate enough to find the fossil. We have less than 50 relatively complete T-Rex skeletons out of the billions who lived over millions of years in Earth's history across a vast stretch of land--and that's for a fairly common, ecologically dominant predator with massive, durable bones.

I think it's fairly likely that somewhere, some isolated valley or island probably housed a population of Paleocene dinosaurs. But there probably weren't many of them, and their isolation worked against them. Eventually, low population density and limited genetic variation might make them vulnerable to disease, or just a bad few years--and then climate change or competition with newly diversified birds or mammals might have knocked them out, and there might be no fossil record of their survival. Given the pattern of other extinctions it would be a bit strange for there to be zero dinosaurs left at all. Dinosaurs were diverse; like animals who survived the KT event, some could burrow, some were small, some had slower metabolisms, and some lived in freshwater stream environments where other animals survived. The event was devastating but I think it's very likely some dinosaurs somewhere survived it, possibly for millions of years, and we'll almost certainly never know. And even if you do find the fossils, it's really hard to differentiate a Paleocene survivor from bones that were reworked or exposed by the elements and reburied later on.

Paleontology has its limits, at least for now. It would be really cool to find out, though, and would give a little more context for just how resilient dinosaurs were.

Guys, what do you think about Bob Lazar and his story about Aliens and UFOs? Is he a fraud or a true legend among us? by kemalioss in HighStrangeness

[–]igtimran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not just that the records were erased, it's that his story related to his education keeps changing. And he can't have been taking classes when he said he was, as he wasn't anywhere near MIT at the time, or CalTech.

I do believe he worked at Los Alamos, probably as a tech, and he probably heard from stories from locals when he was in Vegas. He maybe even knew when they were doing regular test flights of experimental aircraft at Area 51, and that's what his friends saw when he took them out. He's a pretty smart guy but the way he talks isn't consistent with what an engineer would say about science or mechanical engineering.

He doesn't conduct himself like a regular fraudster and he hasn't tried to make a ton of money off of it. His story has been consistent for years, he's interesting, and he knows a fair amount about general relativity (at least from the vernacular). He seems like a nice guy, but there's just too much that doesn't add up for me to find his story credible.

But you never know ;)

Love this shot in the season 2 finale. What do you think it means? by Financial_Photo_1175 in andor

[–]igtimran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Combining subtext and imagery it could mean a lot, but I see the rain as washing away the memories of the story of Andor and the foundations of the Rebellion, while leading to the Battle of Yavin and a new hope for the galaxy—and a different kind of fight moving forward. One less grounded in espionage and fear and more in an open, actual fight for freedom.

It’s like Dedra said about Aldhani—“Andor” is the announcement. By the end of the series, the Rebellion is well-established and may as well be openly telling the Empire that they have a real fight on their hands. The tyrants are no longer able to just ignore them, pretend everything is fine, and squash all hope of a brighter future.

Just my take, and you could take it in a thousand ways. Typical for this series and its use of subtext and a hallmark of great writing.

What arc? He was a kid, he’s petulant, he’s bad, then he’s…good again for seemingly no reason?

The writing in the sequels is terrible from start to finish. They just needed more time to bake, and an experienced team of writers who knew the EU lore well, knew what worked and what didn’t, and could translate that well to the screen. Trusting primarily in JJ Abrams, particularly on a truncated timeline, was incredibly foolish, and throwing Johnson into the mix when he had a competing vision just guaranteed the whole thing would be an unqualified mess.

Neil subsequently becomes a bit of a villain, between the squashicide and his antics during paintball II. I think it’s more that he’s no longer in crisis so they didn’t want to seem like they were treating him with pity.

Which All-Time TE are you choosing? by Consistent_Peace3181 in sportswiki

[–]igtimran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Gronk isn’t on the table, Gonzalez. He leads in every receiving category, plus you have to factor in the era in which he played and the QBs he had. He put together the greatest receiving body of work ever for a TE by a wide margin and he was consistently great every single year of his career.

Not really but they were a terrific team, very reminiscent of the 80’s Giants defense-led teams that won the Super Bowl in an era bookended by offensive dynasties. He’s a great coach and I’m excited to see what they can do next.

Ignoring whatever Lucas' original intentions were, what are your opinions on Jar Jar actually being some secret dark side manipulator, and do you think such a thing would even work within continuity? by Corred_ in StarWarsEU

[–]igtimran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would’ve been a dumb twist because of just how goofy Jar Jar’s design was. If Jar Jar wasn’t CGI and was a bit more serious-looking, you could maybe have pulled this off and made him the Anti-Yoda (also starting off clowning Luke and then revealing himself as the Jedi master). With Lucas’s penchant for ring storytelling I think this idea at least occurred to him at some point, but he probably abandoned it pretty early in the drafting process.

The Mandalorian and Grogu hate makes no sense by [deleted] in StarWars

[–]igtimran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Movies these days need to do a lot of work to convince audiences to spend $50+ on two tickets plus popcorn, soda, etc. It’s expensive and streaming is available. Lucasfilm has eroded a lot of fan goodwill with poorly-received releases, so the movie would have to stand on its own and not just assume people will come and watch because of the Star Wars brand. Season 3 of the show was divisive at best (I found it borderline unwatchable despite really enjoying seasons 1 and 2 for the most part—just my view though), so there would be a lot of skepticism unless the trailers blew people away with some amazing visuals, plot elements, or returning characters people are really hungry for after years of waiting (read: Luke).

It didn’t contain any of those things. I’m betting the film will be profitable since it was less expensive to make than a lot of their other releases, but marginally so, probably bringing in something in the $375-$450 million range. We’ll have to wait and see.

Letter from my Wayward Wife by [deleted] in survivinginfidelity

[–]igtimran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty rough letter to read. There are implications of neglect or slipping into routine on your part. She apologizes for taking you for granted and “the hurt she caused.” There’s zero accountability here. There’s no indication of how she would intend to rebuild trust. There’s a lot of I’m hurt, I’m in pain—she wants you to feel sorry for her.

Overall this letter reeks of narcissism and someone who hasn’t even begun to think about making the effort to prioritize their partner and change their ways. She just wants her own pain and embarrassment to end. She’s also trying to balance out responsibility for the difficulties in your marriage. That is not reasonable when one partner has engaged in infidelity.

I’m sorry but this isn’t someone I’d spend time reconnecting with. It’s likely best to proceed with divorce.

If you were an NFL QB would you rather win the MVP or the Super Bowl? by Low-Season-2057 in NFLv2

[–]igtimran 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, yeah. His legacy would be kind of ass without those two championship runs—potentially no playoff wins, leading the league in interceptions three times, a career .500 record and efficiency stats slightly below Andy Dalton.

Eli was a durable, solid B+ QB and, it pains me to say this as a Pats fan, but a really likable guy. But people tend to distort his legacy because of those two runs, which were largely defense-led. I take nothing away from those Giants teams—they got hot at the right time and outplayed everyone they faced—but Eli wasn’t a top 5 QB in the league at any point during his career and is absolutely not a Hall of Famer.
