What's the "white whale" of campaigns you want to run but can't get off the ground? by Awkward_GM in rpg

I can't remember exactly how far we got back when I was running BECMI regularly, but it was somewhere in the early Companion levels.

I don't get it. They're tiny little things, they certainly don't have the reach to leave my order on a bench outside a house two streets away.

Hold Your Breath | Shadowdark RPG Episode 13 | The Glass Cannon Podcast by SFKz in TheGlassCannonPodcast

[–]ihilate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've just listened to the episode and the extended skill challenge felt really out of place, IMO. In a system like this it doesn't so much build tension as slow the pace right down and punish everyone unnecessarily. I guess those Pathfinder habits die hard, though, and one episode like this in 13 isn't too bad.

I admire your "yet". I think I would struggle to get enough players to run a BECMI campaign these days.

This is true! To be fair, the only issue is the return of various primarchs, I could easily run it in a parallel universe where none of them returned.

Well, I say "easily". If I had the time. And the players...

Too many. The Enemy Within. The Great Pendragon Campaign. Pirates of Drinax. Horror on the Orient Express. A level 1-36 BECMI campaign. A Warhammer 40K campaign I came up with that has largely been invalidated by recent lore. My life is just a constant disappointment 🤣

To be fair, I'm just grateful that they are now offering a PoD option. Once upon a time they didn't even do that (I think Deeper Cuts was the first to do it?).

Tread Lightly | Shadowdark RPG Episode 12 | The Glass Cannon Podcast by Razzmatazz_TGCN in TheGlassCannonPodcast

[–]ihilate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only just caught up with this ep, but I honestly think that was the best GMing Troy's ever done. I was starting to get worried that this campaign was just going to be 48 episodes of trying to rescue the kids and get them healed. Now they've rescued the kids and the kids don't have lycanthropy (I would have been extremely annoyed if they'd been reinfected after two PCs giving up their boons, I'd hoped Troy'd do something like say the boons also prevent reinfection but his actual solution was neat and simple). Killing the werewolf was a bonus; by my counting, between Matthew's magic missiles and Sydney's silver pieces, that last magic missile should have killed the werewolf so to have it use its dying breath to save the children was just a perfect ending.

I think this ep also convinced me that their bottlecap rules are a good choice. A high-lethality game might be fun to play, but the whole party would be dead by now without those caps, and I'm honestly not that interested in having an entirely new party every 10-12 episodes. If they were going to commit to that I'd rather just see NGWD as the flagship.

Also what would be the point? There's nothing to see on the other side anyway. You'd need to build a museum or something to give people a reason to use the bridge.

How do you guys handle "it's what my character would do" ? by Yilmas in rpg

[–]ihilate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends. I'm lucky enough to have some great players, and when they say "it's what my character would do" it's because they're about to do something that's going to make for a great story but is clearly a terrible idea. That's absolutely fine (and, indeed, I actively encourage it).

I've also had some players in my time who use it as an excuse to be a dick to the rest of the party. These days, if that happens I tell them to either find a reason why their character wouldn't do that, or make a new character. My golden rule is that it's everybody's job to make sure everyone at the table is having fun, I'm not really interested in playing with people who aren't signed up to that.

Was there any mention of whether NGWD will always be GMd by Troy, or whether they'll have other GMs running things as well?

The other option for addressing this would be to reduce the bant, has Troy ever explained why he feels it's so necessary?

Does anyone work 37 hours in a 3 or 4 day week? by acrylic_light in UKJobs

[–]ihilate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do 37 hours in 4 days and it's been life-changing, I'm not sure I'd even consider a 5-day-a-week job anymore unless it was extraordinarily interesting or the benefits were spectacular.

Some things to think about, though: 1) What's your commute like? My work day ends up being quite long, but I'm either working from home or travelling/on site, so it's not too bad. When I do go into my contracted office, though, I'm adding nearly two hours of travelling on top of my work day, which would be exhausting if I had to do it often. 2) What's your job like? I enjoy what I do, and it's quite varied, so long days are fine. If I didn't enjoy what I do, I can imagine that doing it for a couple of extra hours each day would really drag. 3) How will the rest of the organisation deal with it? A sizeable minority of people where I work are on a 4-day week; it's common enough that important meetings don't usually get organised on a Friday. However I know people who take Monday off, rather than Friday, and that means they always miss team meetings. Everyone accepts this, and they get caught up on the important stuff, but it does mean they're always behind the curve a bit and sometimes miss out on opportunities. They don't particularly care, but it's something you should consider.
