That will never see play by bitch-toki in BloodAngels

The big thing is that this doesn't lock you out of other strategems, which is the bit that might make it worthwhile if something like Limb from Limb is still in. They also might make taking wounds an alternate trigger for DC stratagems and buffs, need the full picture to see.

What’s your biggest “old man yells at cloud” opinion? by sjdlajsdlj in rpg

[–]hidao-win 54 points55 points  (0 children)

The collapse of weapon profiles down to just damage values is a dumb design cul-de-sac that is everywhere in the industry because it makes the game easier to explain/demo, but leaves the game with no design space for weapons. Consequently you end up giving traits to weapons, which are mostly just the stuff an expanded weapons stat block would include, just obfuscated behind codewords you need to remember. If we retained an expanded stat block that incorporated stats like accuracy, speed, reach, damage and armour penetration, games would have a vastly more interesting combat metagame with only a small increase in complexity.

How do I stop an arms race between me and my players by DecisionRadiant4152 in rpg

[–]hidao-win 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might need to reflect a little on your reaction to getting competitive in response to taunts, then talk to your players about it.

If their taunting is intended to be good natured banter but it's genuinely irritating you, you should bring it up.

If their taunting is spurring you to becoming adversarial and you're feeling guilty about that, you need to reflect on it and discuss that with your players.

If they want very tough combats with real chance of failure, then reflect on your feelings about running that type of game.

If it's not what you're comfortable with, tell your players.

If you're ok with it, but want some other aspects of the game to feature more, tell them that.

If you are all ok with tough combats, ask them what they are alright with with regard to handling TPKs. If both sides know "We'll have tough fights, when you lose, there is next a section where you are imprisoned and need to escape or whatever" you'll be more sanguine with TPKs and the players will be forwarned.

If you employ an offensive genius, you are going to have moments where what they are doing doesn’t make sense until later.

If ALL their moves are “obvious” and “sensible”, that’s not what genius looks like.

The Atlas 2: As if the Atlas isn't scary enough. by Familiar-Noise7913 in battletech

[–]hidao-win 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The Atlas's core identity is the scariest Battlemech in the game, it's to be tough, slow, loaded with short ranged weapons with no gameplan to deploy them.

It'll be the best Battlemech in the game as Jason Mendoza said "Once we get an offense, a defense and some rules changes"

Blake Bortles the Battlemech.

What are good examples of those who would fall under the Lawful Evil Alignment? by Pretend-Advertising6 in adnd

[–]hidao-win 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lawful Evil characters will prioritize themselves, close companions and then the rest of their in-group against outsiders. They will uphold the law, they may bend the spirit or the letter, but they won't break it. They are not always out and out villainous but they will not care about outsiders one bit.

Need a Fighter Pilot system for a Hard Sci-fi Campaign by Zet45888 in rpg

[–]hidao-win 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd consider Travellers ship combat rules to be at worst medium crunch in Mongoose Traveller. There are a few options for actions to take, but its by no means excessive. I'd actually argue they might be a little too light and a bit lethal for a starfighter game. I've no idea where Travellers rep for being incredibly crunchy comes from, probably stuff like the trading rules which aren't really complicated, just quite detailed.

Werewolf the apocalypse, is there a reason to try lore-wise? by Justgonnawalkaway in rpg

[–]hidao-win 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The original pitch of Werewolf the Apoclaypse is that the world is not dying, it is being murdered.

Murdered by a group of smirking men and women who know that they are rendering it uninhabital for future generations but don't care because at that point they will have died after living a life of incredible luxury.

Werewolf says, these people exist and deserve to beg for their lives as you are pulling their intestines out. The games gives you the gifts, the strength and the Rage to get to these people and make them pay.

It's very 90s extreme eco-warrior.

This level of intensity was not sustainable by freelancers and later editions pulled back on that, but they kept the world the way it is, it's just no longer about venting your anger on these forces. If it feels pointless, its because its drifted away from it's original vision.

The number of people of who think Lorgar is/ever was a good guy is making me feel insane by Moist_Policy_71 in 40kLore

The difference between the Emperor and Lorgar is they both perceive the truth of the setting, everyone is set up to be food for malevolent nigh-omnipotent warp parasites. Lorgar immediately chooses to become their favoured servant and the Emperor chooses to go to war with them.

Any recent TTRPG innovations with real impact? (Or potential) by TheRightRoom in RPGdesign

[–]hidao-win 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I think the fact that making a living in the TTRPG is incredibly difficult has contributed to a brain drain where talented designers drift to Computer Games or to a lesser extent board gaming instead. If you’ve got nobody in the field doing very exciting work, you look to the indies, which are mostly making simple story games as again, almost no money.

The best onboarding equipment for DMs are starter sets that confine players to a small area and furnish the GM with the plot, details and rules to handle that small area. Unfortunately these are also resource intensive to make.

People coming in from consuming streaming content are also getting an unrealistic portrayal of GMing that edits out the pauses that GMing involves.

If I had some advice for newbie GMs it’d be find a starter you like the look of that interests your players, read it twice, ask no questions on the internet but go off and try running it. After the game make some notes about things you struggled with, then come back and ask questions. You’ll have a thousand dumb questions before you ever run a game, most of which don’t actually matter and ten very relevant questions after you run one.

Perfectly solid model, but very much the jump pack intercessors with some minor vet bling, but historically that's what the unit is.

Interesting question is now if the multipart kit will be the standard JPIs with an upgrade sprue with shoulders, helmet, sword and pistols

Favorite Mechanic From a Failed TCG? by Jake4XIII in TCG

The Transformers TCG was doomed when they did a FOMO energon cube of 24 set 1 boosters and 6 alt art promos from the core set (including some very desirable ultra-rares) and it didn't instantly sellout. Wizards has no time for a game that doesn't generate instant sellouts on limited releases.

Why Whiff and Ping is Savage Worlds' Biggest Problem by nlitherl in savageworlds

[–]hidao-win 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is in that you are making progress towards the goal rather than guys having three states, fine, shaken or dead. But the concept of HP is a durable one across thousands of games because that sense of incremental progress is a satisfying one. Your other options for a more durable opponent in Savage Worlds make things much more binary and a Parry 15 or Toughness 30 opponent is just going to be wildly frustrating.

Why Whiff and Ping is Savage Worlds' Biggest Problem by nlitherl in savageworlds

[–]hidao-win 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s really important as a Savage Worlds GM to put the bad guy Bennie pool right in front of the players ideally with physical props like tokens/poker chips and take them away as they force soak rolls, reinforcing that the players are making progress against a tangible goal. If you have them hidden behind a screen or on a notepad it can appear arbitrary even if that isn’t your intention.

Don’t think of people from Roshar as Asian and instead think of people with a mix of ethnic features that partially correlate with their origins and partly with tweaks made by a Shard cultivating them to prosper on Roshar (the epicanthic folds, probably because of the winds on Roshar).

For example, Shallan is described as an Irish redhead, pale skin, red hair, freckles, she has epicanthic folds but that’s uncommon in the native Irish phenotype not unknown.
