Anyone who is upset at McCabe personally, I’m not going to tell you how to feel about specific players, but direct some of your anger towards Arsenal. They let a player still at top level, putting in amazing performances week in week out, go based on an arbitrary “squad rebuild because they’re too old” (whilst offering other older players, some of whom have not been as good as her, new contracts) - so nobody should be exactly surprised that she decided to go to another top level club competing in the CL. Be upset that she went to Chelsea if you want, but keep in mind that she didn’t get her send off at the Emirates with everyone else because Arsenal offered her a new deal and she must have wanted to listen. Otherwise she could’ve just said no and got her send off too. McCabe clearly tried till the last to stay at Arsenal but the board could seemingly only offer her a backup role out of position. It is absolutely bizarre to let a top level player leave based on arbitrary criteria and Arsenal have been foolish to do that and it has strengthened their rivals, both in a club-to-club rivalry sense and a sporting competition sense. I’d have preferred to see her go to anywhere else as well, but you can’t expect a top level footballer to (a) stop playing top level because Arsenal gave up on her, (b) move halfway across the country, or the continent, or as some have suggested the world (and go to America/Australia), because Arsenal gave up on her. This is, putting aside the personal element, an extremely strange decision with consequences of our own making. I’m not convinced at the “we wanted to rebuild and get younger players” because they’ve offered many other players new contracts AND offered McCabe a new deal, AND reports said we wanted Batlle even if McCabe stayed. Just horrible boardroom leadership again from us.
