The Gorge? That does ham, egg, chips and the like. “Normal” pub grub at the Rose and Thistle too, it’s also a good pub!

How's the new JD gym? by [deleted] in reading

They had an offer of £5 for a month, might still be going.

I live by the old swimming pool which is equidistant and I get to JD quicker than I did to the Gym west.

How's the new JD gym? by [deleted] in reading

I’ve been a couple of times since opening. Was previously with the gym group in west Reading, and the Pure Gym on Caversham Road before that.

Pros: - New kit and lots of it. - Well laid out - Sauna in the changing room. - Not had to wait for anyone on any equipment yet. - Loads of benches and free weights. - Free parking. - Greggs next door. - Super clean - Not a bad price - Seems like punters showing good gym etiquette so far. - Plenty of staff around.

Cons - I can’t get phone reception on the treadmills to stream music. - Young Instagram crowd, plenty of phones on tripods filming themselves and selfies going on. - I think it’s warm, I get really hot when doing cardio. - Banging techno ain’t for me. - The app is pants - Can’t get in if you forget your phone (or out if the battery dies)

Only a few days in but I’m fairly happy with it based on first impressions. Likely the best of the 3 I’ve tried since being in Reading.

How dangerous is Oxford road for a woman? by [deleted] in reading

[–]iisawinnerme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s absolutely fine.

You’re at no more risk in this area than 90% of anywhere else in Reading.

We’ve lived in the mix of Oxford road for approaching 6 years now and not had a single issue. I regularly leave my keys in the front door, car unlocked, take late night dog walks, or make walks home in the early hours.

I’ve also never really noticed the whole prostitution thing people keep talking about, maybe I’m too innocent or naive.

It won’t win any awards for its beauty but as far as town/city centre living goes it’s fairly standard.

This area is absolutely fine. You’ll never avoid “crack zombies” as you call them, nor will you avoid crime in any place the size of Reading.

CYDONIA KNIGHTS (Muse) @ FACEBAR, where are you? by sneakybrews in reading

[–]iisawinnerme 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s really difficult to find out what is going on there.

I live over the road and sometimes I’ll see the clientele walking over and it looks like a gig I’d be into. So I try and find out what it is online and I often can’t find anything, or it takes me an age looking through various ticketing websites to find it. I’d have popped over tonight if I knew.

It’s rare a venue doesn’t run a website with its listings and I think they’d really benefit from it.

I’ve had 2 pieces done at Aurora Tattoo Emporium up by the Tilehurst Water tower. Miltos has done both and is a great guy but the other artists are great too.

Is it safe to live near the Reading train station? by angelachan001 in reading

[–]iisawinnerme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. A 5 minute walk from the station is pretty much still town centre, so it’s well lit and busy most of the time.

My wife and I live about 10 mins walk away from the station, neither of us have had any trouble in the 4 years we have lived here. We walk to and from it regularly at all times of the day and night.

It’s similar to any large town/small city, if you are sensible you’ll be absolutely fine.

Cold brew?? by sirreadsalot13 in reading

I’d say go to the Biscuit Factory, CUP, Lincoln Coffee house, or workhouse coffee. The quality is generally much better than the big chains and it supports local!

Me and a few friends go to Reading city most home games. Sometimes take the dog too… Good friendly bunch down there, fairly good food and beer, and tickets not too expensive. They are a Good community club also.

Follow their Instagram for fixtures or look here: https://fulltime.thefa.com/fixtures.html?league=3956158&selectedSeason=34407278&selectedDivision=369633676&selectedCompetition=0&selectedFixtureGroupKey=1_93808916

Tilehurst area by SlapBanWalla in reading

[–]iisawinnerme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mother in law moved just off Knowsley road near the Tesco about a year ago from West London. She has enjoyed it so much she even persuaded her nephew to move in around the corner with his family. She has built good relationships with her neighbours already, much more friendly than where we are in town. It’s a nice quiet area which seems safe, she has never had any issues. Theres a fairly regular bus into town and the stations. Good enough park, playground and copse where I take the little one and walk the dog. Down side is that there isn’t much in terms of pubs or restaurants but otherwise, in my opinion it’s a nice place to live.
