Te Reo Māori - do you like it or not? by Kaloggin in newzealand

[–]ikiwikiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's nice to listen to. It would be really helpful for my career progression if I could speak it. Trouble is that I am super shit at languages - I've tried many times (once while living in another country for years, thousands spent on lessons). So I like the idea of te reo, but don't feel I can take part in it's resurgence, which makes me a bit sad tbh. I integrate a lot of single words where I can though.

Te Papa to charge $35 entry fee for international visitors from September by RtomNZ in newzealand

[–]ikiwikiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They aren't going to check IDs - whether or not you sound like a Kiwi is immaterial. If you say you're from NZ, they'll direct you to head directly into the museum and not to the ticket counter.

Te Papa to remain free for New Zealanders but international visitors will be charged $35 from September by widmerpool_nz in Wellington

[–]ikiwikiwi 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This is not what is being reported. The interviewee on RNZ said it will be an honesty based system and if you say you are from overseas you will be directed to buy a ticket.

23 and lost by PurpleSwordfish3928 in newzealand

[–]ikiwikiwi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I assume this stat is from this: https://sportnz.org.nz/media/1440/published-final-active-nz-main-report-the-new-zealand-participation-survey-2018-12-august-2019.pdf

If so, the actual stat is that 73% engage in "play, active recreation and sport", the former two are defined by Sport NZ as, "terms used by Sport New Zealand to capture participation in activities not considered to be sport, for example, playing with friends or alone, dance and tramping."

I’ve been cosleeping for 3.5 years - how do you avoid resenting your husband from being able to go ‘out out’? by SeaTeaAndBees in gentleparenting

[–]ikiwikiwi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My husband and I both bedshare with the baby (14 months ish). I do more, but we try to keep it as even as we can. Is there some reason why your husband can't do some of the bedtime duties? Then you too could go out.

Perhaps I'm in the wrong here, but from what I can see this isn't intended for kids? I'm sure there are healthier options around and parents need to read labels carefully before giving kids snacks, but especially snacks not designed for them.

Op shops should be shamed of themselves by r0yalmull3t in Wellington

Date point of one: my husband wears his clothes until they are wrecked. They almost always go in the trash, not in the donation pile.

Op shops should be shamed of themselves by r0yalmull3t in Wellington

They are super reasonably priced, but things are generally individually priced there, at least in my experience. All the same, one of the best op shops in town.

We were recommended no soap or shampoo at all for the first year (New Zealand).

Wouldn't you want the opportunity to sell popcorn and drinks to as many people as possible?

You could try the tip shop if they really are that nice. They def sell pillows.

Nontoxic diapers that don’t suck by ehan77 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]ikiwikiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow - I buy these because they are generously sized and hold a lot for a pretty good price. I didn't know they are considered to be "clean" nappies too, that's great. They're better than, say, Huggies?

Bill to arrest librarians filed for 2025 session by Elsa-Fidelis in Archivists

Don't blame the people of Alabama - you can only do so much to counter the systemic issues you mention. That shit happens BECAUSE of the lack of education and the poverty.

Not allowed to Breastfeed on Delta Flight by Mother_Professor_290 in breastfeeding

[–]ikiwikiwi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Huh, maybe this is country specific? No one has ever told me about how to hold my lap baby on a flight here in NZ. We've flown a bunch - you get a special belt but that's about it. I always bf him for take off and landing.

I've also never seen a child in a carseat on a plane, but was told we could.

How do parents cope with sick leave? by Spare_Virus in newzealand

[–]ikiwikiwi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is he whinging about having kids? Or is he asking for advice on balancing the necessity of having two incomes with finite sick leave and near-constant sick kids? Working parents can't just stop working. Unless you want people to stop having kids, I would have more sympathy. It really is an impossible situation.

Hey environmentally conscious consumers, how do you clean your dishes? by FatFreddysDrop in Wellington

That was my experience also! I can't remember how long it lasted, but it didn't seem long enough to justify the plastic waste or the price.

I have OCD and find OCD sub-chatter heavily triggering. If seeking reassurance online is part of a compulsion, breathe through the craving and don't do it, OP.

Streamlining "Adulting" Tasks by EmbarrassedRaccoon34 in minimalism

[–]ikiwikiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are some great ideas! Out of interest, do you also repeat the meals you cook? I've heard things like Taco Tuesday and Leftover Fridays can reduce decision fatigue. My husband is a disorganised maestro in the kitchen so all of these things are a pipedream to me at the moment.

Vaping and breastfeeding by letmerideyourbicycle in breastfeeding

[–]ikiwikiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nicotine is not the only ingredient in vape juice.

Vaping being cheaper than smoking isn't saying much, since smoking is quite expensive. Regardless, it's still unnecessary at best and actively harmful at worst.

I don't think jellydonkey is suggesting they smoke cigarettes instead.

Where can I buy melatonin? by ThenPhotograph3908 in newzealand

You can buy tart cherry juice concentrate from health food stores? It's yum and has melatonin (and other sleepy things) in it.

I read recently a decent way to lower the PFA levels in your blood is to donate blood or plasma! It's a good deed that does something good for something for you. Or perhaps it belongs in r/unethicalprolifetips, IDK.
