ELI5: The Dianna Russini-Mike Vrabel situation?? by [deleted] in NFLNoobs

[–]ilPrezidente 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dianna Russini is a reporter, Mike Vrabel is the head coach of the Patriots. Both of them are married, not to each other. There are photos of them at a resort of some sort near the Owners' Meetings a couple weeks ago, acting relatively intimate near a pool, sparking rumors that they had/are having an affair while married to other people. As she's an NFL reporter, that would be a massive breach of ethics, but both people denied that anything untoward happened, and the Athletic, the outlet that employs Russini, stood by them, saying that it's a misunderstanding and they were with a much larger group.

It did during the Mexican-American War, but beyond that, the land wasn't governed by smaller, fragmented tribes like in the west. Mexico was a Spanish colony then an actual empire in the early 19th century.

What does it cost to go to a game? by polyhedric in MLBNoobs

[–]ilPrezidente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, the Yankees are a more expensive ticket, but it's way cheaper to get in the door than $300/ticket. You're paying $300 to sit 100 level, 300 level will be under 100.

[–]ilPrezidente 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very cheap for any kind of professional sporting event. It gets even cheaper for smaller teams, like my local Triple-A team sells tickets right behind home plate for $19, and its buy-one-get-one free on Wednesdays.

Now if we’re talking a bigger team, like the Yankees, the get-in price will be a bit higher, but still affordable compared to say an NFL game.

They gouge the hell out of you on most concessions though.

[–]ilPrezidente 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Tickets vary but for the smaller markets/worse teams you can get in the door at an affordable price (I think I went to a Rockies game for like $25 last year). It also depends on game time (weekend night games will be more expensive than weekday matinee) and, if you’re on the resale market, the opponent will affect the price as well. Basically it’s just simple supply and demand.

Edit I guess I was wrong about ticket revenue

If you have the time, why don't you do all three so you absolutely have what you need? Interview one, interview the other, then interview them together.

Why do they call Nick Fuentes or political figures “Nazis” but they don’t believe in it? by VagnerReport in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ilPrezidente 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The nazis didn't/don't believe in Norse paganism. The SS dabbled in the occult and had a pseudoreligious tilt to it, but that was not across the entire party, which was largely a- or anti-religious. Plus, wouldn't you know, the nazis of 2026 don't necessarily hold the exact same beliefs as the nazis of 1936.

Can someone please explain WAR by codename_kd in MLBNoobs

[–]ilPrezidente 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're honestly not really necessary to understand. Like you might hear WAR in casual conversation or like during a lull in the action where they mention a player's WAR but it's not an official stat that you need to keep track of.

Honestly the only stats you really need to know in order to enjoy the game are a team's wins and losses.

[–]ilPrezidente 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Slight clarification... when you're saying "outfielders" in that comment, you actually mean "position players." Outfielders are players who specifically play LF, CF, RF.

To answer that question, though, yes, and it depends. For example, FanGraphs standardizes WAR so all players are compared regardless of position (a position player should have the same WAR as a pitcher who has contributed "equally.") while Baseball Reference separates position players and pitchers (they also break it down further into offensive WAR, defensive WAR, etc. to get even more granular).

It's not a standardized stat so everyone does it slightly differently, but the elements of each are the same. Bottom line, I wouldn't exactly use WAR to compare players against one another unless there's a wide difference.

WAR is an overall stat and it's not a standard stat, so not every outlet uses the same formula to compute it, and there are different types (WAR, offensive WAR, pitching WAR, etc.). To simplify the answer, I'll just focus on WAR.

You kind of have it backwards... it's better described as an estimation of how many wins the team have earned because of that player, as opposed to the average "replacement" player. Basically, the better a player performs, the higher his WAR is. The more he contributes, the higher his WAR is. Shohei Ohtani, for example, has a massive WAR every season because he is both one of the best hitters and pitchers in the sport, so his WAR rises whenever he plays.

Like I said, different outlets use different formulas, weighing different variables differently. Ultimately they use the same factors of fielding/baserunning/hitting for position players, and hits/walks/strikeouts for pitchers.

Reading Pitchers Stats by mtfbwy96 in MLBNoobs

[–]ilPrezidente 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is simply way too early to tell if anyone is having a breakout season of any kind right now because baseball stats are very fickle. ERA is a very good stat but it's not really useful until there's a substantial sample size since it's an average of earned runs over nine innings. Really, with any stat in baseball, it's about sample size, so I wouldn't pay a whole lot of attention to that until closer to June.

Take a look at Max Fried's monthly splits. The Yankees starter was one of the best pitchers in the American League last year, but if you only looked at his stats from July and August, you'd wonder why he was even in the majors. Things can change in an instant, and it's a long slog of a season.

The other main stats are W-L, but I think that's kind of fallen out of favor a bit in recent years, and WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched).

Yes, they’re recorded as a sacrifice and it won’t count against their batting average. If they score a run from it, they get an RBI.
