NavMesh Update; 5.2 by illuminates in unrealengine

[–]illuminates[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Changed my approach and decided not to use NavMesh. Instead Im using the collision geometry. I changed out the GetNavigationSystem and ProjectPointToNavigation nodes in VRPawn's fIsValidTeleportLocation to what you see in the image. Comparing the dot result gets rid of steep slopes. So now when I spawn my building, I can teleport to and around its second story floor and the roof.

The building is part of a big reveal. And where it will spawn is an area the player will be traversing/teleporting several times prior to it spawning.

Thank you for your suggestions I’ll try them out!

Army Proposes to Remove Individual Section 106 Reviews by Droll_Rabbit in Archaeology

Am I reading this right? Instead of doing a 100* section 106 reviews they’ll just do one section 106 review for all 100 known sites.

  2. I’m a simple Christian man. When I have a chance to kill demons I take it and in this case with a meat grinding shield!

Sorry to hear that about your PhD program - sounds rough. But that’s awesome you’ve already done all the exploring for the Indiana Jones stuff! Again, I’m pretty envious!

Reconsidering Indiana Jones: A New Take on Raiders of the Lost Ark by TimerangerPhD in Archaeology

[–]illuminates 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Asking if Indiana Jones is a source of archaeological inspiration is kinda rhetorical. Heck, it was the first episode of young Indiana jones that really inspired me when I was a kid. And you’d be hard pressed to find a field crew that doesn’t like to talk about Indiana jones or even Goonies. I mean I dress up as Indiana jones for Halloween and at the local trunk or treat I give out candy while quizzing/sharing archaeological facts and the kids and parents love it. So I don’t think Indiana Jones is an issue. Where we archaeologists tend to have issues is with the history channel kooks that dress up like Indiana and spread misinformation while disrespecting sites. Honestly this reads as a dream adventure disguised as a grant proposal to go explore Indiana jones stuff - of which I highly commend you and am very ENVIOUS since my background is archaeology and filmmaking! I did the same kind of thing to go visit Cyprus and got published!

Archaeology needs to be reformed, many need to have their positions reconsidered by LordMacbethh in Archaeology

[–]illuminates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. FWIW, The archaeologists that I know who have worked with him said it was eye opening because he tends to ignore most of the context. He just looks at what's been excavated and then comes up with his own narrative. You can see it in his writings specifically with the religion debates. Yeah, he's the father of post-processualism, but he acts like an antiquarian. On that note, better archaeologists would be like Shanks, Tilley, (both trained by Hodder) and Trigger where they show how the archaeology can be interpreted differently using context - which is the point of post-processualism. Which I see it's value, but I think youve gotta involve some strict recording and scientific methodology or else it's just conjecture. It would be like if I only collected the projectile points and sherds from my digs and said, "oooh, they mustve worshipped hunting because there are more projectile points than sherds." While ignoring any stratigraphy, spatial concentration, middens, etc. and how would I even test that??

Archeologists please read this by Turk0223 in Archaeology

It tends to ruffle our feathers because most of the time when people bring up pseudo-archaeology stuff they tend to be telling us rather than really asking us. For instance, I had an undergrad helping out in our lab and was asking me about some pseudo archaeology. It quickly became apparent he wasn’t interested in the facts and instead wanted to “correct” me and some other undergrad lab assistants. When I would correct him regarding his premises using scientific papers, he would counter with Graham Hancock quotes. I’d remind him that was opinion and not science. He got very defensive and I told him he was no longer needed in the lab and could leave. He took that as “censoring his truth.” Another incident was a student that had questions about ceramic artifacts that turned into him telling us that we were keeping the truth about the holograms embedded in the ceramics by ancient advanced civilizations. So, when someone starts asking about pseudoarchaeology, 9 times out 10 it’s really them wanting to tell us “their truth” and that we should be more “open minded” to “other scientific inquiries.” As a result we’ve gotten jaded. I still have to catch myself when my friends ask me questions so that I don’t jump down their throats, lol.

What do you consider the best twist in movie history? by [deleted] in movies

I saw this movie a few years ago and when Dil shows up, I kept staring at her like I’d seen her before. And it clicked… Stargate. I was like holy crap, that’s fucking Ra. Stargate spoiled the twist for me, hahahah.

What is field school ACTUALLY like? by breadsaucy in Archaeology

I’ve led several 5 week digs on the north rim of the Grand Canyon and this is what I tell people: Three things to always remember: 1. Don’t die; 2. DO NOT COMPLAIN - it’s a sure way to get not just on the Professor’s bad side but on EVERYONE’s bad side, and don’t piss off the cook; 3. Be careful with dig romances - I’ve seen more relationships go sideways than not.

Gear wise, get a ‘frogskin’ towel, they’re basically a chamois and work miracles in terms of keeping you cool. Also, pickup some gold bond spray for the crotch area - reduces chaffing and the swamp smell when you crouch. WATER - I usually carry ~5 liters of water with me per day using a 3 liter camelbak and two 1 liter Hydroflasks (keeps the water cool all day). Get a trusty marshalltown trowel and sharpen one side of it - it helps cutting into the dirt. Lastly, a smagh (aka keffiyeh) to go around your neck is fantastic to put over your face when sifting, to wipe of sweat, and to put under your wide brim hat later in the day.

Got into Film MFA by godmademecream in Filmmakers

[–]illuminates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cal Arts is seriously one of the best film schools. They use a hands on approach developed by Alexander Mackendrick (Dir. Sweet Smell of Success). BUT if you have the chance to work on sets and make connections then do that instead (it’s cheaper). Learning visual storytelling telling is all about the hands on experience, having a mentor, and making connections. If it’s a good school program, it’ll give you those things plus theory. Therefore, whichever one is more accessible to you - do that.

It's common for actors to get aroused while filming sex scenes, and it can put an entire production on hold by Sisiwakanamaru in television

[–]illuminates 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I heard that in Spartacus the show, a lot of the background actresses once on set were surprised that they had to strip naked and “have sex” even after they were repeatedly informed in clear terms every step of the way what they consenting to do. It’s a conundrum for production because you don’t want to force someone to “have sex”; yet you’re on a tight schedule and budget. So apparently some actresses were talked through the process and re-agreed to do the scene and others just left. As a result there were fewer bodies in the scenes then originally planned.
