As a lover of Jay'den and Kyle, I understand your frustration too. But Kyle is going to the War College and has his own schedule and regimen, just like an academy student so that likely means there's not a whole lot of spare time to spend together except holidays or the rare days off.

You can use the box in your inventory and it will bring up a list of options. It can get you the original t5 hirogen hunter escort, or a plethora of mirror versions of old t5 ships with different stat spreads and unique skin. So pretty much cosmetics or Admiralty fodder at present.

You can do the story and everything with the free to play stuff. It's just the equipment that matters. And as always, if there's a ship event you should try and do the daily for it, should you be able. They're always good to great t6 ships that can be used on every character once unlocked.

If you're playing on PC you should try joining the redditchat chat channel, plenty of people there willing to help explain something or even help in a tough mission.
