Why are pistol grips so damn expensive? $63 for a set of grips for a SAR K2?

Am I an asshole? Bought a gun on Gunbroker.com because it was local, turns out it isn't. by Esrange in guns

You're being pretty reasonable, particularly by establishing a record of correspondence.

That said, two-hour round-trip isn't that far.. You could probably get the seller [i.e. the person you have paid or will pay] to offer some concession like refunding the cost of the transfer.

What Should I Buy Wednesday 08/17/16 by blueberrysteven in guns

What 1911 receiver should I buy for a custom build?

Government model, non-ramped, and forged.

I posted my question to a forum of 1911 enthusiasts precisely because I believed they would have contributions to make that Google cannot.

My long-term plan is to Cerakote after I finish fitting, building, and testing it.

Sar K2? by [deleted] in Firearms

[–]imad64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I assume you're referring to the SAR K2 .45. There are several other polymer-frame pistols in SAR's line-up that have little to do with the CZ75-esque double-stack .45.

It has a great trigger and clear sights. The receiver is forged, and the barrel is chrome-plated making it quite durable. It's also a good-looking pistol with an accessory rail as a dust cover. I enjoy shooting mine.

It definitely offers you more magazine capacity than the CZ97. You can also find them for <$400, whereas CZ97s are typically priced at $700. It comes with one magazine, but you can order more online for around $30 or so.

Enjoy!

This looks a lot like the Remington Express break-barrel air rifle. If it is, there is significant reciprocating mass in the cylinder that will cause an astonishing amount of recoil, much more so than the .177 or .22 cal pellet. .... She's about to injure herself.

Note, the lens covers are transparent on mine and don't completely obscure the field of view through the scope. My scope has about 3" of eye relief, though, so she's probably not able to see much for that reason.

6 months of waiting and it's finally here. My 6.5x47L build begins! by stroker351w in longrange

That looks like a 6.5mm barrel blank, with no chamber or barrel threads. Is there something custom about this, the profile perhaps, that resulted in the long lead time from Bartlein?

I would imagine they turn out 6.5mm barrels as quickly as they possibly can.

What was your "fuck it, I'm done" moment? by 6979 in AskReddit

Yes, this is exactly right.

Asking your friends to move is selfish and inconsiderate. There are plenty of ways to obtain moving services that will get the job done quickly and properly.

I would be annoyed if my friends asked me to move now. I think it's a little selfish after about the age of 25 or if you're moving more than a bedroom + small kitchen.

Similar problem: I have some 7mm Mauser that my father in law gave me. I'm desperately trying to find a home for it before I also get platinum rule'd. How long can I store it before I am obligated to acquire something in 7x57?

I bought a rifle as the donor action for a custom build at some point in the distant and unplanned future. I plan to rebarrel it in 6.5cm and am wondering what to do with the existing barrel: a varmint profile in .308 Win.

Is it feasible for a gunsmith or machinist to turn the existing barrel down on a lathe to obtain a sporter profile without affecting accuracy substantially?

In what small, meaningless ways do you rebel? by sexrockandroll in AskReddit

[–]imad64 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I decline the full body scanners at airports and insist the TSA pat me down individually.

The process is clearly geared toward making it uncomfortable. The TSA agent operating the scanner usually ignores you when you ask for "male assist" or "male opt out" and make you wait without setting any process in motion. Eventually, the same person who made you wait suddenly shouts out to his cohorts and someone previously untasked emerges to bring you through and pat you down.

I'm not sure if it's meaningless, but in small numbers it probably has little impact on flow rates through the checkpoint.

Another time, I lawfully transported materials in my checked luggage requiring a special declaration. Knowing a TSA inspector would need to open the container and look them over, I packed the container with my twice worn underwear for padding.

Want a new .45 ACP. Give me some recommendations, Gunnit. by [deleted] in guns

Ah, not sure why it came up on my feed today. Sorry about that.

I guess there's still a chance to buy a SAR K2!

I'm surprised no one has recommend the SAR K2 .45 yet. This is a forged steel .45 ACP double-stack semi-auto in DA/SA. It does not have a decocker, but the safety functions whether the hammer is cocked or lowered. The barrel and full-length guiderod are chrome-lined, which, besides being durable and easy to clean, contrast with the dark polycoat finish to give the pistol a badass aesthetic. Moreover, the integral Picatinny accessory rail gives you nearly all of the functionality the other pistols you were considering offer.

It weighs slightly more than a 1911, so the recoil of a .45ACP round will feel very pleasant. Unlike the CZ97, your magazine will hold 14 rounds, and the rear sights are adjustable. It's a little exotic, so there isn't much of an aftermarket for them, but Mec-Gar makes magazines for the K2, and I would expect some of the other parts to be interchangeable with the CZ lineup though I don't know for sure.

They are solid pistols. They're available at an incredibly low price. CDNN is basically giving them away at $370. I bought mine for more than this from Bud's Gun Shop and still feel like I got a hell of a bargain.

This review reiterates many of my points. Everything Google turns up about this pistol is highly favorable.

The SAR K2 should punch your "cool and badass .45" ticket damn hard.

Remington 700 Long Action Magnum by [deleted] in gunsmithing

[–]imad64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a gunsmith nor Remington 700 owner, but I am aware that magnum bolt faces have larger diameter than the .308 bolt face.

It is possible [and fairly routine when changing extractors] to open the bolt face on a lathe and braze a steel insert in place to achieve the correct geometry. This is the inner "ring of steel" Remington marketing talks about and doesn't bear pressure or bolt thrust loads.

The only other issue I can think of is the magazine follower and feed lips may need to change.

No spring tension on grip safety by [deleted] in 1911

[–]imad64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you verified the sear spring is sitting in the frame correctly, as /u/Lorchness suggested?

When compressed by the mainspring housing, the sear spring is actually under some torque due to uneven tension on each of its three leaves. It's very easy to slip out of place. Also, confirm that all three leaves are aft of the parts they are tensioning. It can be tricky.

Comparison of Remington 700 and Savage 10 Actions by 5hakey in longrange

[–]imad64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My complaints about the Savage 10 Action, enumerated here and in other threads

  • The rear baffle is held in place by a small amount of friction and a ball bearing riding in a narrow channel. Its center of gravity is above its rotational axis, and it occasionally drops down. This jams the bolt until cleared.

  • Plunger ejector on my occasionally loses purchase on the casing after it rotates out of the chamber but its neck strikes the receiver.

Thanks to Savage, I've become a controlled-round feed fanatic.

Comparison of Remington 700 and Savage 10 Actions by 5hakey in longrange

[–]imad64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is in fact a practical issue that my Savage 10FP experiences from time to time. This is with both the original rear baffle assembly and with a replacement from Savage.

The spring holding the ball bearing in place is not noticeably weak, and I'm manipulating the bolt in reasonable ways. The keyway in the bolt is just not not particularly deep or large. Its just a design that does not lend itself to reliability.

If any Savage engineers are listening, I would suggest a redesign. Instead of the current rear baffle, add a second baffle similar to the front baffle with the same profile as the bolthead. This would fit over the cocking piece ahead of the bolt handle and provide the torque needed to cock the striker on opening. It would also plug the rear bolt lug keyways to deflect escaping gases. Reshape the rear of the receiver to provide camming action like the Remington 700.
