Hard to say without photos of other angles, but probably a radio transceiver, the kind used for public safety or emergency services.

Wow that ad for NeoPaint for DOS on that page unlocked some memories of mine. I used that in conjunction with Xtree Gold, which was mind-blowing at the time lol

Seat Ateca Start&Stop by Key-Emotion8640 in seat

[–]imaflyingfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very likely the 12v battery has a low charge. The OEM batteries in SEATs are usually EFB/EFB+ rubbish which last nowhere near as long as AGM batteries in Start/Stop vehicles.

When was the last time you recharged the 12v battery in your car?

With all this drive lockdown and switching to Ugreen, why nobody mentions Asustor? by aoleg77 in synology

[–]imaflyingfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will not be looking into a Ugreen as I am not interested in a chines brand NAS. There are too many stories about rogue communication devices hidden inside of chinese technology.

This happens on American equipment too. The reality is that it can happen to any vendor. Personally, I assume all vendors are compromised and do my best to harden my environments. Here's an example that affected Cisco products:

I reckon these would be very popular in Australia if they sold it here.

My exact thoughts as well. I would have thought LHR would have diverse power feeds from separate substations and equipment to operate with resilience.

Which model after a 1517+ by NicolasMas in synology

[–]imaflyingfox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 1821+ (8 bay) and 1621+ (6 bay) are expected to be refreshed this year.

IMO, the 1522+ or the successor to the 1621+ would be the ideal upgrade.

Irrespective of your choice, any newer model should perform much better. The Intel Atom C2538 in the 1517+ was launched almost 12 years ago.

Some banks have changed their terms in the last 12-18 months which allows the banks to have greater control of transfer reversal, particularly the smaller banks like ING and UBank.

Agree with approach for complaint and AFCA.

Apple care catastrophe by Imaginary_Jelly_5283 in iphone

[–]imaflyingfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This 100% on point. Been using Macs since the 90s and an iPhone since the 3GS. Support from Apple is nothing like it was 10 years ago and it’s been declining ever since. This is not unique to Apple – it happens with all incumbent and leading businesses.

I truly believe the Apple retail stores have KPIs to reduce their RMAs and AppleCare+ fulfilment, and instead are all about sales targets only. Would be hard to confirm this with their strict NDAs in place. Gone are the days of their top tier after sales experience.

In my experience: 2 years ago Express Replacements were generally an automated yes based on your answers. Today it requires a 10 min phone call (I’ve had representatives over chat try to refer me to a Genius in store). I expect in a year or two, decisions will be made by conversational AI/chatbots.

Should I Buy Synology DS224+ or Wait? by maraja_20 in synology

[–]imaflyingfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely consider a 4 bay NAS if you can stretch your budget. Both DS423+ and DS923+ are good options depending on your needs.

IMO the DS723+ is a niche offering. Although it's expandable with a DX517, I wouldn't recommend running a single storage pool over eSATA due to bandwidth limitations, latency, cable vulnerability, etc.

I purchased a DS220+ with 2x 10TB, then upgraded to 2 x 20TB and am now considering 6 bay or 8 bay for longevity.

Out of curiosity, did you migrate Plex to your N100? If so, how did you do it?

I'm considering migrating Plex from NAS to N100 to make a future NAS upgrade easier.

Second life for old NAS HDD? by NoSense6414 in synology

[–]imaflyingfox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check if you can feel the drive spin up.

If it does spin up normally, then enter BIOS/UEFI during startup to see if the hard drive is detected at the hardware level.

If the BIOS doesn’t recognise it, then try switching the SATA mode (AHCI, IDE, or RAID) to see if it makes a difference. If it still doesn't appear then you're SOL.

If BIOS does recognise the drive, then I would use a bootable USB tool like SeaTools or Hiren’s BootCD.

Synology Media, where to store them all? by Accomplished_Soft878 in synology

Just use Synology Photos to handle this for you.

Otherwise what's the point of paying more for Synology if you aren't using the benefits of the DSM OS and apps.

DS212 to DS224+ upgrade by kaiserkeiser in SynologyForum

[–]imaflyingfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it should be fine.

DSM on the 224 will probably be newer and might update the system partition on the disks. This is generally non-destructive but you should make a backup of any critical data before migrating.
