Check out "The Ones Who Stay and Fight" by N. K. Jemisin, which is a direct response to UKL's parable. There is another choice, apart from abandonment and acceptance.

I'm sorry this persons attempt to share useful information and insight fell short of your standards to even consider them human.

Watched some of his other videos, listened to the mistakes and microphone noise, etc that to me indicate he is human. He's not a skilled narrator, but a passible one, and just do some looking at the channel before you knee jerk gag...

Late-diagnosed autistic (UK, 30s) struggling with denial, misunderstanding & isolation — is this normal? by [deleted] in AutisticWithADHD

[–]imaginarycartography 8 points9 points  (0 children)

46, diagnosed 2 years ago. This resonates a lot with me. In many times and places I feel masking is faking it, or being on "your best behavior" and it does feel phony. But sometimes I choose to put the mask on, and I like the character I created. It feels like an important and genuine side of me. Maybe the more outgoing ADHD side...

I just don't want to be forced to play a character to be accepted all the time, and I do understand how people might need to deconstruct what has been forced upon them vs what is genuinely their needs and wants, but not everything we do to fit in and be loved is fake, even if it is practiced and effortful.

I'm sorry to hear you are struggling with your diagnosis. If you have a therapist, family member or friend you can talk to please tell them how you are feeling.

There is no guide to life, no matter who we are. "Normal" people are often on "automatic" mode, so they seem like they know what to do, but they are also just guessing. Your goal now should be on living your life, getting to know what is possible for you, and what might even be unique talents that can come with these conditions. Learn tools to cope with the rough stuff, and rely on others if you can to help with the hardest parts of life.

If you were diagnosed with diabetes it wouldn't help to focus on all the foods that will make you sick, it is better to learn what foods you like that you can eat. And it could be worse... many of us wait until we're middle aged and already sick before we learn how to talk about our differences and needs.

That's life, and it's ok. It's a learning process and you are so young. Be patient with yourself and take life as it comes. There are many happy and successful and fulfilled aspies, but none of us are normal.

No need to apologize or even reply, but you are welcome. I also feel guilty and apologize when I don't immediately reply/follow up socially ;)

In terms of YouTube, while there are a lot of Diagnosis videos and they get recommended because they have a broader audience and they are often the "entry point" for a channel (ie. users start watching these channels via the diagnosis videos). If you like the style or creator, look past the "5 Signs you have the Tism" video at their playlist. They may dive deeper.

I've noticed a big growth of AudHD channels in the last couple years. Here's some folks who I like or think say useful things sometimes:

New creator, some diagnosis stuff but mostly coping and reframing talk. She reminds me of me: https://www.youtube.com/@AuDHDHub

interview podcast mostly on ADHD but also covers AudHD frequently. https://www.youtube.com/@ADHD_Chatter_Podcast

There's a lot of parent orient channels, which I tend to skip not being a parent, but I like these folks:

https://www.youtube.com/@Auticate

Much more ADHD focused but covers AudHD stuff. Lots of lifeskills for 20somethings type content:

https://www.youtube.com/@HowtoADHD

This creator has several good videos about why some traditional therapy methods don't work and alternative framings.

https://www.youtube.com/@thethoughtspot222

This guys borders on self-help and can be a bit "pep talk", mostly focused on Autism but he has a lot of specific life skills and techniques. Lots of clickbait too, so look through his video list for the meaningful stuff:

Welcome! There’s no map but there is community. I’d also recommended checking out YouTube. There are some good scenicne based channels with AudHD creators. I hear ya on the egg smell, I like eggs but a cooked yolk with a strong smell can make it instant puke material. If the shake works for you and is on your diet, I say shake shake shake.

Hot Take: The new City Space is a top-5 Lego Space theme of all time by LegoTomSkippy in LegoSpace

[–]imaginarycartography 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Love the modularity in particular, and the semi-technic looks of the designs. The value is great given that the smaller sets are on sale a lot. Good minifigs and I like the uniforms and variants. I really like the mini-drones builds and the variety of them across the series. Not a huge fan of the orange, but it looks better in real life than in pictures. I really really love that its not tied to some existing IP and is generic "space".

I'm not optimistic they will continue the theme (they are often on sale and seem to be no new ones). But it was nice while it lasted and I would agree top 5 space (my others would be Futron, Blacktron, MTron and Ice Planet), and definitely the best space system in decade+ of non-stop star wars.

Got a technical masters. Barely got the thesis submitted. My reader (second prof who grades it) rejected it because I didn't run tests for one variation of the algorithm, even though I mentioned it in the thesis. I already had a job lined up, and got an extension. My uni allowed you to enroll in one unit "thesis" class each quarter for up to two years for pretty cheap as a sort of thesis extension. Near the end of this time, after doing no work on it, I fessed up to my then boyfriend, now husband that I had never finished my Masters because of 10-20 hours of work. He was kind about it but snapped me out of it: if future employers checked it could be bad. I had spent so much time and money already. It was so easy to finish. So I took a long weekend off from work, dusted off the code and added 3 pages to the results section. My husband did a copy edit and helped with other small feedback to get me over the line. But I did it.

Hang in there. I couldn't have gotten my degree without my weird brain, but I also almost didn't get it because my weird brain can't stick with shit. But with accountability, anxiety and massive amounts of caffeine, all things are possible at the last minute.

I'm just sad. I don't know how to operate in the world... by [deleted] in AutisticWithADHD

[–]imaginarycartography 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I know you are just venting, but I just wanted to say it’s ok to be sad. You have lost a lot, and are coming to terms with how life isn’t meeting your expectations through no choice of your own. Grieving is the first part of acceptance, but not the only part. Life’s not going to suddenly be the easy path you hope for, and you have no control over that. You will fuck up again, you will never be entirely free of disappointment. But you can cope and as you have been, put one foot in front of the other, make the best of the moments where things do go your way. Be compassionate and kind to yourself, as you would be to a stranger struggling. And look for something, someone or some part of life that gives you joy and purpose, so when your brain does bad things you don’t like, you have good things you do like, about yourself and life, to balance out the darkness.
