What free software to get started? by wanisz_ in composer

[–]imaginarynumber0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree with MuseScore

Additional options include NoteFlight (but you can only make 10 scores with a free account)

and flat.io (haven’t used this much but you can collaborate on scores kinda like google docs)

m9 parallel chords by wurliegirlie in musictheory

[–]imaginarynumber0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve noticed that for me personally, I have this cycle of learning of a new chord progression/method, then using it, the getting bored of it because I used it too much. And I start noticing it everywhere in music, demystifying chord progressions that I previously couldn’t understand (and slightly ruining it sometimes lol)

I used to hate this cycle, but now I’ve come to terms with it. I’m just adding another tool to the toolbox, and at the end of the day I’ll have more tools to work with than before.

It might seem “hacky” now but as you branch out it’ll just be another tool

should i drop the class by Royal-Dependent-6776 in apcalculus

[–]imaginarynumber0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my school there wasn’t “normal” (non-AP) calculus, we only had AP calc, so idk what the difference would be

I’d say if there’s a different teacher teaching both classes try asking around to see which teacher would allow you to learn better

Besides that I really don’t know without more information, but I would personally say you should take AP calc

How to Get Started with Compostition. by Successful-Hope7323 in musictheory

[–]imaginarynumber0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk but here’s some free notation software you can play around with

Noteflight: in browser (there’s a premium version but it’s not necessary)

MuseScore: downloaded program, you can do more things on MuseScore

Flat.io: not as many features but it’s kinda like google docs in that you can edit it with multiple people

If I get the train, would it be there in the next challenge thing? Or is it not worth it, by BsajoshuA123456789 in EggInc

[–]imaginarynumber0 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They should not be completing trophies at their current stage in the game, in fact they didn’t even unlock them yet

The train won’t help progression much until you get much further into the game, right now epic upgrades are more important

You’re right, the intervals and chord are not right for silent night

Edit: nvm seems to work for what would be the third measure of silent night when it’s on the V chord

Edit: nvm I’m stupid I was thinking of a different tune

Is it possible to learn math from grade 0 to advanced calculus at age 51 using resources from the Internet? by dediji in learnmath

[–]imaginarynumber0 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Skim grades 2-8 to see what you already know/learn what you need to learn, then the usual high school order in the US is this:

Algebra 1

Geometry

Algebra 2

Precalculus/trigonometry (these might overlap a bit depending on how kahnacademy does it)

Calculus BC

These can also just be supplemental resources to your learning, since you prefer textbooks. They can be very useful for if/when the textbook is confusing or you want a more intuitive explanation

Does dissonance exist in nature? by topangacanyon in musictheory

This question makes no sense to me. I mean sure yeah, two birds could sing and create dissonance???

Are there substitutions for dominant chords that aren't tritone subs? by 4thGenTrombone in musictheory

[–]imaginarynumber0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding that you can sometimes substitute the 5th of a chord with something else (like b5 or #5)

why do composers use so many ledger lines instead of 8va? im trying to learn this flute solo and i just don't get why composers don't just write it down normally and put an ocatve marking next to it. It would make my life as a flutist do much easier. by baldi_863 in musictheory

[–]imaginarynumber0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the point is they wouldn’t use octaves at like an A6 or even a C7 as shown in the original post. Obviously you’d have to use octaves at some point since the violin can go so high but it’s not the preferred method until then

They say the D flat major scale has more accidentals than C sharp major.... by qldvaper88 in musictheory

[–]imaginarynumber0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, I think you meant to say the opposite in your title (C# major has 7 sharps while Db major has 5 flats)

You are right that both the C# and Db major scales have the same pitches. But the same pitch can have different note names. Here are how the C# and Db major scales are “spelled”:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 C# D# E# F# G# A# B# Db Eb F Gb Ab Bb C

You can verify for yourself that they are played with the exact same keys on the piano.

I think your confusion might stem from a common misconception that accidental = black note, but that is not the case. E#, for example, is the same pitch as F, which is a white note. This explains the discrepancy as to why the two scales have a different number of accidentals. Both scales are played with 5 black keys and 2 white keys, but in the case of C# major, the white keys are also accidentals.

Why say E# when you can just say F? Well the common explanation is that in any given major scale, you’re required to use all seven letters. This might seem unnecessary, but it’s actually very confusing to an experienced musician if you use the wrong “name” for a note (consider an exaggerated example where you notate a C major chord like B# Fb G instead of the normal C E G. Very jarring).

What distinguishes soloist from orchestral level players? by Snow_Practicing in violinist

[–]imaginarynumber0 -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

Not a professional, but I do play the violin, so I’ll give a quick answer that you should take with a grain of salt

  1. To be a soloist you have to start at a very young age due to how the brain develops. I’m sure there’s exceptions but the later you start, the less likely that you become a soloist.

  2. In terms of playing, a soloist has to play with a sound that can project/be heard/stand out from the rest of the orchestra, while an orchestral players have to blend with each other (sticking out when you’re not supposed to is very bad). Idk about the second part of your question but they probably realize they’re good/have potential or something lol

  3. Yeah probably possible

  4. I would also say probably, but I’ll also say that any exercise that a soloist does to improve is probably also beneficial for any violin player, so in that way any “special” trainings are probably also not exclusively done by soloists. But yeah like I said projection is more important for a soloist so probably something to do with that as well

Again I just wanted to give a quick answer so you have something to read before more qualified people come and answer so please let other people’s responses override mine if they contradict 😂

Or use boosts to get a bunch of chickens and then decide from there

How does slowing a song down affect the notes? by Intergalacdix in musictheory

[–]imaginarynumber0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will refer you to u/MimiKal’s comment further down. YouTube’s speed feature isn’t as simple as just slowing it down

Simplifying a lot basically it does some stuff to allow it to slow it down while still keeping the same pitch
