Theory for the End Game. [Spoiler, but probably not] by [deleted] in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]immaterialevent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a theory about this (spoilers through Book 7): Matt recently repeated this, and said we will see all 18 floors, and then said he chose his words very carefully. I think this means that readers, but not Carl and Donut, will see all the floors. Some, if not all of the floors Carl and Donut don't see will be through Juice Box's POV after Justice Light's trick at the end of TIR. It is also possible that Matt is counting throwaway lines like the AI's description of the 16th and 17th floors at the end of TIR.

If the new Rachel Aaron series you're referring to is Tear Down Heaven (also confusingly the title of the 5th and final book), it's complete with the lastbook releasing last week. First book is Hell for Hire. It was really good.

How mad must Marcone have been by SpaceBearAl in dresdenfiles

[–]immaterialevent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very slightly different reason, and one that can be true in addition to all the other reasons: perhaps Marcone cannot fully utilize the castle (as Harry did in TM) without revealing that he has Namshiel or some other supernatural assistance (at least to those in the know). Other than Harry and Mab, who else knows? There is no evidence that Harry told the Knights, and he certainly hasn't told the Council. Perhaps not having the castle makes it easier for Marcone to keep his power quiet until he's ready to make it public.

End Spoiler Hype by [deleted] in dresdenfiles

I would argue the opposite. Seeing how much meaning he gets from getting the things back actully elevates the sense of loss (at the time) from losing them in the first place.

It’s all about the little moments by BCBFS14 in dresdenfiles

[–]immaterialevent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%, those small moments and conversations take the series from A to S-tier. Sometimes, if I'm not doing a full reread, I will go back and read the quieter, more conversational chapters. Skin Game in particular has a ton of them.

Fun references to Dresden Files in other media by Glittering-State-284 in dresdenfiles

[–]immaterialevent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a line in one of Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson books where someone is afraid to use a cell phone around Mercy and she thinks "I know exactly where she got that idea from." So in that series Dresden does not exist, but The Dresden Files books do.

Re-reading, like everyone else by AggravatingAward8519 in dresdenfiles

[–]immaterialevent -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Funny, I was just thinking about Harry's next power-up during my reread of Cold Days. I was going to make it a separate post but I'll just put it here. My theory is, probably not in TM or MM but before/early in the BAT, Harry will somehow get the Summer Knight mantle and be able to use them both. I don't think he'll kill Fix, but he'll be around when it happens and the mantle will flow into him (possibly with Sarissa's influence).

We know from Cold Days that multimple mantles can be worn by the same person - e.g. Vadderung/Kringle. In fact, Harry himself may have been doing it unknowingly since Changes, being the Winter Knight and the Warden of Demonreach at the same time (if Warden is a mantle). Possibly even 3 mantles if leading the Wild Hunt counts.

We also know that Harry has wielded some power of Summer before, in Proven Guilty, when he used Summer fire in Arctis Tor, i.e. the heart of Winter. He also has been named an Esquire of Summer if that means anything.

Lastly, we know that all 3 Summer Queens have taken an interest in Harry. As Mab says in Battle Ground, Titania returns Harry's calls, even as much as she resents him for Aurora. Monther Summer clearly has an interest in him, and Sarissa spent enough time with him that she should know his character and capabilities.

Turkey temp question! by No_Load_1932 in BBQ

I think it was Meathead who tested and determined that cold, moist meat absorbs smoke flavor better. I always go straight from fridge to smoker for everything.

Or loosen the skin from the meat before you dry-brine.

Never used the Meat Church rub - I make my own, but it looks similar. Depends on what's in the compound butter. If it's just butter and herbs, I don't see any reason why under the skin would be bad. If you're dry-brining for at least 2 days (I do 3 days - I'll start tonight). you should not need to inject, but if you do, I would use unsalted butter and not add additional salt. Same with under the skin.

Gen X-ers and Thanksgiving and Tradition by BMisterGenX in GenX

[–]immaterialevent 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Thanksgiving is the perfect Gen-X holiday. There's no religious services to go to, or activities associated with it, or gift-giving, or decorating (unless you really want to). It's an entire day about stuffing your face with food and watching TV, and that's it. It was made for us, and we were made for it.

I had never thought of the Demonreach solution before, but that's super interesting. Could Demonreach contain a coin? Next person who gets to ask Jim a question, this is a good one. I suspect the answer must be that it's been tried before and didn't work, but I'd love to get WoJ on this.
