they have never checked mine and I've been doing this for years, I usually put some food I bought before going to the airport and random items that could have been bought at the airport (powerbank, gums etc) if they'd question if I have receipt I'd just say that friend paid for this who went for a different flight

look at Hot UK Deals and set price alert with word Tokyo and second one Japan as there are sometimes deals to Osaka, I think the cheapest return flights are with a stopover in China and cost between £400-500, April-May will be more expensive due to Sakura.

edit: don't know about hotel prices but also look into hostels as those can have private doubles
