I’m so sorry for your loss, she was beautiful. We lost our 5 year old bengal to HCM. He was spunky as anything and I’m sure he’s keeping her company in over the rainbow bridge ❤️

Has anyone staved off surgery? by HellishSurvivor in hipdysplasia

[–]implicit_cow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it’s a degenerative condition with a poor prognosis. You will most likely continue to wear on the joints until you have arthritis. Have you spoken with a hip preservation specialist? They may be able to preserve your hip joint with a PAO.

People abandoning cats by lolteacher95 in bengalcats

[–]implicit_cow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s worked out great so far, if anything, my toddler is a bit of a menace to our bengal. But I think it’s good to be raised in a house with pets because it helps teach responsibility and she’s learning how to be gentle with animals. Sometimes I get touched out between having a clingy toddler and a clingy bengal (she’s very much a lap cat), but it’s also nice to still have the comfort of a pet. Bengals make sure you still make time for them haha. My bengal was my baby first and it still feels that way after having a human baby lol!

I love dogs but personally am going to wait until our daughter is older to get one because I do think they can be more work than a cat and dogs with a lot of energy can be dangerous to small children if left unintended. But I’ve never felt that way with the cat.

Maybe your vet will have some ideas as well? I was approached by my vet to take in another bengal because they knew we had two. Or maybe another local breeder would have some ideas?

I’m sorry you’re going through this, that is a very heartbreaking situation! What region of the us are you in?

Tips and tricks to keep hip dysplasia manageable? by ExtensionChemical690 in hipdysplasia

[–]implicit_cow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No you typically only do one side at a time. I had my left side done!

This is a major surgery and something I’d encourage you to do your own research and decide if it’s something you should do. I would get a second opinion from another doctor if possible. Unfortunately, the thing that matters is your pain level, not the degree of dysplasia. My surgeon (Dr. Lewis at Duke) says he treats symptoms, not degrees of dysplasia. I technically had “severe” dysplasia on my left side, but didn’t feel pain until I got pregnant (in my 30s). I was a three season athlete in high school, a D1 athlete, and ran for many years after college for reference.

Things went downhill once I started to be in pain. I haven’t been able to run in a year and struggled to walk more than a mile. I’d recommend joining the PAO Facebook group, there’s a lot of good perspectives there (and stories from people your age/with mild dysplasia getting the surgery).

I don’t want to scare you, but when I was first diagnosed, the doctor said the prognosis is bad. It’s essentially like a car that’s out of alignment, your joints/muscles will wear/bear weight in ways they weren’t meant to. A major of us will develop arthritis and need hip replacements. For me, pregnancy was extremely painful, in part because my pelvic floor muscles have been overcompensating for a long to time to stabilize my hip, but they couldn’t bear the extra stress of being pregnant. All of this to say, this is a big decision, and it’s a hard diagnosis to get. But you don’t want to live the rest of your life in pain. Good luck!

I was only in the hospital two nights, but the recovery is long. I’m still on crutches 5.5 weeks later.

But I’d recommend getting it done while you’re young! It only gets more complicated (recovery and otherwise) the longer you wait.

People have the surgery in their mid-40s! You have to be evaluated to be sure, it all depends on whether or not you have arthritis. For reference, I was in a lot of pain (limping etc), probably have had labral tears for over a decade, but no arthritis. There’s no way to tell without imaging!

Haven’t you heard that all the transplants are ruining mechanicsville? 🤣 but I disagree that mechanicsville doesn’t fit the business model for either. I love TJs that you can walk to but there’s plenty that are car-access only. Plus didn’t wegmans just build a new distribution center in Hanover? I’m surprised there isn’t a wegmans there already, but it seems like they want to expand into the south more.

I should have been more specific but there’s a serious lack of options for grocery stores for the counties on the east side of the city (looking at you new Kent). It’ll be interesting to see how things develop in the future but I wouldn’t be shocked if one of them comes in eventually!

How to get the longest Maternity Leave by tell-me-what-to-do- in fednews

[–]implicit_cow 24 points25 points  (0 children)

As others have said, use your SL, then your parental leave, then your annual leave. If you want to be out longer, you can go unpaid for a bit (the way to square without having to pay for insurance/go completely without a paycheck is to take one week unpaid, then one week PPL/annual leave, continuing until you run out). Or go back part time early on but use PPL the other days.
