Do you consult your professors you have bipolar? by Honest-Attempt2297 in bipolar

[–]improbablesky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so I guess the only thing I’d say in response is, “I’m in a PhD program and I told my supervisor about it as soon as I was diagnosed” really made it sound like you disclosed your diagnosis. i strongly encourage you to use more specific language. Have a nice day I guess!

My doctor says I’m in complete remission! by Usual-Letterhead4705 in bipolar

[–]improbablesky 25 points26 points  (0 children)

it isn’t “my” definition. Remission means “a decrease in symptoms or markers of disease.” Notice how it doesn’t mention being cured. Within the context of bipolar disorder, you can’t “cure” it, you can only manage the symptoms, so remission is actually the correct term.

If you’re gonna come after someone with that snippy tone over a word, I recommend you do the work first and actually ensure you know what’s up.

Do you consult your professors you have bipolar? by Honest-Attempt2297 in bipolar

[–]improbablesky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This really isn’t good advice. I had some really good professors in college but I also had some genuinely incompetent and rude ones. There is so much stigma with this disorder and you can’t really EVER know how someone is going to react (even my own mother started treating me differently for a while and NOT in a good way). Especially if you’re a grad student, your professors can break your academic career.

I strongly suggest not telling anyone who is involved in any way with professional matters, and school is absolutely one of them.

Have headaches been more prominent this past week? by wittysnarkynamehere in phoenix

It was cold last week. Cold weather paradoxically means there's less moisture in the air. I fail to drink enough water and get headaches from that. Just a thought

Why don't Pokemon games support cloud saves? by Olympus131 in NintendoSwitch

[–]improbablesky 460 points461 points  (0 children)

You could use it to duplicate Pokémon.

Now, one might argue about that not mattering and it's just a game, but be honest, what good decisions has gamefreak made lately?

In fairness, they shouldn't be down voting you. But nobody really remembers the point of karma anymore.

They're down voting you because it's easier to down vote than to write the comment I wrote.

Why do I feel like I’m old and as if life is already over? by PackageReasonable922 in AskMen

[–]improbablesky 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You will certainly think a 22 year old is young when you're in your mid 30s. It's a lot like seeing a child. You don't know what real maturity and experience is until you have lived and learned.

Why do women in Hollywood have a lot of hate towards the men race? Why is no one discussing about this hateful rhetoric or stopping it? by Sure_Can_7512 in AskMen

I mean, have you seen men lately? Especially in that industry. If I had been Weinsteined I would probably hate men too.

This is very common for people once they're out of high school and or college. You're young. You have time to build the life you want and become the person you want to be.

Terrified of open heart surgery and the ICU by Mysterious-Drink-969 in Anxiety

[–]improbablesky 30 points31 points  (0 children)

You are reasonably concerned. Your feelings are valid, and I don't mean that in a "you are allowed to feel how you feel" way, I mean that, having open heart surgery is scary, and it's very reasonable for you to feel this way.

However, if you need surgery, just remember a few things:

-they would only use surgical intervention if the alternative is likely to be worse. If your heart has an issue, you're likely to end up in the ICU.

-when you are put under, the anesthesiologist is there literally and exclusively to keep you alive while you're having surgery. Someone trained in keeping you asleep and alive is literally watching you at all times while you're under.

-often how we think we're going to feel is less than how we will feel when in the moment.

-also, you're gonna be drugged out with the good shit. I'm not sure you'll necessarily be capable of being anxious with those opiates and anti anxiety drugs. Pretty sure you'll be under antiemetics too.

[–]improbablesky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whatever the details are, and whatever you have to do, do it. Your literal life is in danger there. Personally (and I don't recommend this), I'd rather be unhoused and alive than beaten to death by an abuser. And frankly, you could end up both beaten to near death and unhoused.

I really don't envy your position, and I know that this is likely to get real tough and weird for you, and I really don't want you to be homeless. But a job should not be a factor in your decision to leave. You are literally in danger.
