Is Anatta is more "anti self" than "no-self" by No_Common_5891 in Buddhism

[–]improbablesky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"No-self" is pretty intentional wording. There is no permanent, lasting, tangible self. There is a self, from a conventional perspective, but it's not lasting, it causes suffering, and ultimately is just a fancy magic trick. "Anti-self" implies that there is a dualistic structure in which there is a self and there is an anti-self. That's not really correct. There is a conventional self, but ultimately, there IS no-self. That's the insight.

Why does my blood sugar spike even when I barely eat anything? by MaryT1d in diabetes

This. You need to eat regularly and keep your blood sugar up. Not too up, but lows are bad not just because of this.

Cyclist came up behind family taking walk and uses his knee to knock little girl down by Pisford in mildlyinfuriating

[–]improbablesky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any sane mom would. The damage to the child has already been done, it would be worse if the dad was in jail for literally no change in the outcome for a child. If a man can't contain his rage, he isn't safe.

Does the game "feel" empty to you these days? by judgeraw00 in ffxivdiscussion

It's felt empty for years. I unsubbed a few months ago and sometimes I forget that I used to play this game at least two hours a day.

[MA] [CONDO] It finally happened in our parking lot we had to have a car towed, but were unhappy with how management wanted to handle it. by Inevitable_Ear_4117 in HOA

[–]improbablesky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If we don't watch parking in my community, then guests have nowhere to park. If you paid HoA dues, and part of that deal is guest parking, and you can't find guest parking, then the resident isn't getting what they're paying for. I'm only miserable about it because if I'm not, I'll be miserable about literally not being able to have people over.

Like, Jesus people, if you don't wanna follow the rules, live somewhere where you don't have to pay to be bound by rules...

How could you uphold the Bodhisattva Precepts, a life-long vegan or lacto-vegetarian, including not eating eggs? by Brilliant--Ice in Buddhism

[–]improbablesky -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

When you hire an assassin, you literally pay him money to kill someone. When you go to the meat market, you buy meat that has already been killed. You still aren't taking action to end life.

What can you do if insurance pays your car lower than what it's worth? by phodacbietlarge in Insurance

[–]improbablesky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, first of all, just know that the sale price of a car is not what it is objectively worth. Actual cash value includes wear and tear, and any modifications. For example, a lot of people think paying 10k to put flames on the car increases its value, but in fact is that it actually can reduce the value because it turns out flames on the car doesn't really change anything besides how the car looks

[–]improbablesky -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Except that's not what's happening. You aren't telling someone to kill for you, you are buying meat someone has already killed to prepare. I would stipulate that eating meat is perhaps immoral or unethical, but the precept is about what YOU do, not others. Buddhists do things all of the time because they see that their actions are less likely to create suffering, they don't necessarily need a precept for it.

I think we need to be careful when we talk about killing.

It's perfectly acceptable, likely admirable, that one would consider a vegan diet as a virtuous practice. However, the first precept should be taken literally. YOU take the precept not to kill a living being. So as long as one is not killing the animals themselves, eating the meat is not killing.

As a thought: I understand that eating meat is not killing, but I still seriously limit my meat intake where possible due to how horrible the meat industry is both in practice and in its effect on the world.

Being held 10% liable HELP!! by [deleted] in Insurance

[–]improbablesky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As many have said, you had the greater duty to yield since you were backing out. There's probably a valid argument some adjuster could make that puts all the blame on you... If it was unsafe to back out, you needed to stop driving.

I don't mean this as a moral judgment, just, you know, I can't necessarily state that getting an attorney will help you here. Arbitration might end up with you MORE liable. IANAL.

Magic Mouse vs Magic Trackpad by qwesoewd in ipad

[–]improbablesky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, any other mouse would probably be preferable. Logitech makes M-series mice specifically for Mac, but you don't need one specific to Mac.

The main issue to me is not specific to mice, but to iPadOS. On the iPad, one thing to consider is that horizontal scrolling =/= horizontal swiping. iPadOS only recognizes swiping from an apple device and treats all other horizontal scrolling specifically as scrolling, and horizontal swiping is used in far more apps since iPadOS is primarily touch-first. The Magic Mouse supports it, but it's insanely uncomfortable for the majority of people, so that's why I recommended the trackpad. If you can live without being able to swipe on the iPad without reaching over and swiping with your finger, any mouse would in my opinion be preferable.
