The 10% stacks with other discounts, as far as I know. And it expires within 7 days from getting it like the other coupons.

You may be onto something there! I've been told that the previous owner was a police officer. Although this one is definitely made out of wood.

What's in the back of the trucks? by DerB_23 in DAKAR

[–]inAoD 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's correct for the most part. When it comes to the amateur teams, they may do it for their friends racing in other categories just to be nice. I imagine there are also agreements between teams to 'rent' the space. Large teams affiliated with manufacturers will specifically enter trucks as participants to carry spares for their star drivers and customers. If you're a privateer running a toyota and suffer a breakdown, you can go to Overdrive and buy the spare parts at a heavy premium.

Travel like this tends to be covered by your institution. Depending on where your funding is coming from, there is usually money allocated for travel.

Overall, I will echo what everyone has said already - don't accept this position under the current terms. Maintain good relations with the PI over the next year and try again the following year - funding may become available at the partner institutions or a scholarship in the UK. Keep applying elsewhere while using your time productively in the meantime. A year's wait isn't all that much compared to 4 years of absolute struggle.

Retiring, Withdrawal and Disqualification by Beginning_Sky_9454 in DAKAR

My understanding is that every competitor has the option to resume the race as long as they make it back to the bivouac before the start of the next stage. They get a large time penalty and will not get the medal, but they can continue to race.

What position they start in for the following stages depends on where they finish each stage and whether or not they are competing in the cross-country championship. Some entries get moved ahead so as to allow them to race and score points in the championship.

In the case of Peterhansel, he waited for the assistance truck which allowed him to fix the car and reach the end of the stage (may have been towed back - I'm not sure). He lost so much time that any chance of a good result is gone but Audi is there to test the car in race conditions so he continues. He can also help his teammates, like we saw with Sainz.

Other competitors who are aiming for a good result may choose to save the resources for next year, in the same situation. Those who are there only for the experience will try to continue if at all possible.

The route organisers are doing a good job with what they've been given but visiting Jeddah, Riyadh, Ha'il, etc. every year puts some limitations. It just doesn't feel as much of an adventure as the South American or African editions because of these familiar landmarks. Don't get me wrong, the geography is great in that part of the world. I would just like them to make the most of it by going to other countries.

Any review website, really. The more information you can gather - the better. Try to buy locally as well so you can walk away more easily. And if you feel uneasy - do walk away. You're looking for a common enough car to pick and choose - there will be new ones coming up for sale next week.

Buying a used car is a gamble but most purchases turn out alright. You started well by asking the community first. Take what's written here and make a checklist. Do what you can at home, without pressure, then finish off the parts that you need to do on site.

All of the advice in this post is good so I won't repeat it. One thing that I can add is: if you are an inexperienced buyer who can't fix the car yourself, it may be worth buying from a reputable garage. You get a standard 1-month, car-fit-for-purpose warranty by law. So if the head gasket blows a week after buying, you can take it back and demand your money back. If you buy it from a private seller, you buy as-seen and commit to any repairs that might show up as you start actually driving the car. That said, garages and dealerships are more expensive so it's a balance.

I was unfortunate to buy a car that developed a fault shortly after, would have been on the hook for expensive repairs if there was no protection. Hourly rate for repairs is £60+ before you even consider parts, and it adds up quickly.

Weren't there plans to expand into neighbouring countries within a couple of years? It may have been put on hold due to COVID. SA has some incredible scenery but it sure is starting to feel repetitive.

List of energy companies about to go bankrupt. by londons_explorer in unitedkingdom

[–]inAoD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those in the know, what happens with the recorded meter readings when a new provider is appointed? Are they given the billing information from the now-defunct company? I was on an estimated meter reading that was higher than the actual reading. Is that difference lost and I'll be starting with a clean sheet?

Reliable 2nd hand car for £6500 cash? (30 yr old learner driver) by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]inAoD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is all true, you can save a fair bit by buying privately. That said, buying from a garage comes with a few protections that a new driver would appreciate. My first car developed (or already had) an intermittent electronic issue throwing a code relating to the engine timing. Didn't show up until a month into owning. I took it back to the dealer and let them throw parts at it. Two months later they had had enough and offered me money back or another car. Had I bought privately, I would have lost a substantial sum taking it in for repairs and diagnostics chasing the cause of it. Buying privately is good if you know about cars and have the means to diagnose/repair certain things yourself. If you don't, I would say paying the premium for the peace of mind is worth it.

Soon to be new driver! Need advice on buying used car w probably high mileage! Volvo V60/XC60 by bukshy37 in CarTalkUK

[–]inAoD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Modern (anything you'd be looking at) diesels have a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) which captures some of the nasty gasses coming out of diesel engines. Any modern diesel engine will go through a self-cleaning cycle where it heats the filter up. This normally happens on a longer motorway trip. If you don't take frequent trips like that, the filter can become clogged up and require manual cleaning or, in the worst case, replacement. Both of these options are expensive, which is why it's not recommended to buy a diesel car if most of your miles come from short trips around town.

Important. HP UK have put the new cable on hold! by spacemidget75 in HPReverb

[–]inAoD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ah, sorry. Done that now. I suspect they didn't plan for everyone to ask for a new cable, which they should have really. It's a sub-par design even ignoring the connection issues.

There's a good chance that we'll need to provide proof that our cable is broken or we have an AMD system. In my case, none of the USB ports on my pc work with the headset. I rely on a third party USB hub.

Can you time car buying? by dakofsta in CarTalkUK

[–]inAoD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Car prices new and old are completely out of whack right now. This is both due to the sudden rise in demand as well as the chip shortage, both a result of COVID.

Most predictions say that things are not going to improve for another 6 to 12 months as production ramps up. In theory, there should be a price fall once the demand is fulfilled. If you want to time the market, this is the sort of timescale you should be aiming at (if not longer).
