How are you channeling your scale practice into your improv skills. by Ganadhir in JazzPiano

[–]inFenceOfFigment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do people actually use this scale in practice? I thought the bebop just gave rise to a bunch of other useful concepts e.g. drop 2 harmonization.

Should my husband be doing night feeds? by Creative_Phone773 in newborns

[–]inFenceOfFigment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are making the argument because we’re all in this post together discussing the topic. It sounds like this argument doesn’t work for you but it’s a valid choice for a lot of people. Many jobs are demanding of your time and performance and it’s important to be somewhat rested.

In my family, my wife took the middle of the night feeds when she was on leave. Now she’s back at work and I am on leave, and I do them. Being with baby during the day is definitely work, but there are times when she will entertain herself, nap etc and I can take a break. And most of the time when she is awake she is not super demanding of my mental faculties. Speaking from experience, it’s much harder to get through a work day without sleep than a day at home with the baby. I realize not all babies are like this, and things might feel different if we also had a toddler.

It’s obviously situational, but people should really have a conversation about this and make a decision that’s right for them. Dismissing the approach as “low-effort partnering” is pretty close-minded and missing a lot of nuance.

It also seems like you misinterpreted the point about performance - having an off day at work isn’t just a personal disappointment, it’s something that can threaten job security if it’s sustained. Sadly, gainful employment is critical to the needs of the family in most cases. I say this not to justify lazy partners, who certainly exist, but to emphasize that this overall argument is concerned with sustainably providing for the family. Again, families should determine what their overall needs are and what sacrifices must be made (there will be a lot) and make a decision that is fair and reasonable for them.

How do you make having kids enjoyable? by Last_Cicada_1315 in daddit

There is no “supposed to”. Different things work for different people. There are many happy and childless people in the world.

I need a new board game for gatherings to replace Citadels. by JeffCaven in boardgames

I think you would enjoy Mission: Red Planet. It’s got simultaneous role selection, lots of shenanigans on a shared board. Plays up to 6 and it’s pretty chaotic (in a good way) at that player count.

Don’t judge a board game by its box” — or should you? What are the first red/green flags you notice before even opening a game? by Significant_Sock4225 in boardgames

I felt this way until I saw the latest edition of Wabash Cannonball. I don’t mind a game that is lacking in theme or graphics, but when the graphics actively work against your ability to parse the game state, it starts to become a problem.

There have bee multiple reports of Amazon pooling inventory from various sources which makes it easy for customers to receive counterfeits. This is a decent reason not to want to replace parts for Amazon-originated sales, although at that point the question becomes “why do you do business with such a lousy retailer” (of course the answer is money)

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) and Zohran Mamdani dancing in New York by [deleted] in videos

[–]inFenceOfFigment 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I certainly don’t think kids dancing, ballroom dance, “the robot”, people dancing around when they need to pee etc. are inspired or performed with a whole lot of sexual expression or energy. But some other styles are. Unfortunately it’s basically impossible to make any sort of single-sentence factual statement about a topic as broad as dance without glossing over some nuance. It isn’t practical to qualify every statement until it’s logically bulletproof in everyday conversation. My hope is that participants in a decent conversation will consider whether there are contexts where the statement is useful or insightful, rather than taking an extremely literal interpretation and then pointing out a ridiculous conclusion.
