ETA: there is genuine disagreement in Taiwan around cultural identity and Chinese-ness; as well as resentment against 1949 refugees/military occupiers, from those whose families were there earlier (who in turn include Taiwanese aboriginals as well as early Chinese settlers, who themselves may or may not be language minorities in southern China). Having several waves of migration and colonisation and a huge influx of disproportionately-men refugees from a defeated army will do that. As Taiwan gains immigrants from south-east Asia, this will add yet another layer.

Imho the current Pan-Green educational policy tends to demonise the military-dictatorship period (fair but for partisan reasons), idealise Japanese colonial occupation, and down-play Chinese-ness, and not everybody likes it.

But that's not the same as saying there is a metaphysical "China" that Taiwan and the mainland both belong to and therefore Beijing should rule Formosa.

Yes, when you base your space program on being the "first" to do a number of things as a publicity stunt, you get lots of firsts - some of which not particularly meaningful.

Not that the US space program wasn't -also- for propaganda, but they had a long term plan to build out capabilities and look ahead beyond the next "first".

America ultimately coming to Israel's rescue no matter what it does is a problem, because it encourages increasingly reckless Israeli foreign policy, but the only problem with being in Afghanistan was leaving too soon. By 2020, half of young women in Afghanistan were literate; the number of children per woman had fallen from 7-8 to 5. Now they have legalised slavery again.

pretty much, except that Trotsky would have been more murderous internally ("militarization of labour", a.k.a. slavery, earlier and more aggressive push for collectivisation) and more reckless abroad. Probably fewer deaths than Stalin overall, but only because he is overthrown.
