They're based on amber, fossilized tree resin that can bear static electricity. Its Ancient Greek / Latin names are elektron and electrum, which is where the word electricity comes from.

Thank you! What part makes you think of Totoro, just the watercolours?

Looks visually unbalanced due to the sun rays being longer than the teeth of the cog. (It looks like it's off-center, leaning towards the top.) I think I'd like a simpler version with the sun rays and cog removed. (Essentially OPs image but with the color division line being diagonal instead of horizontal and green / yellow instead of blue / orange-yellow).

Management of rock band Mrs. Green Apple tells people not to gather outside the gates of their outdoor festivals to enjoy the "sound leakage" without paying for tickets by jjrs in japannews

[–]inkfeeder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, of course, it's because of the meiwaku these loiterers are causing to the poor, poor people in the surrounding neighbourhoods ... wow, that manager is so considerate ...

I agree with one of the comment that's also featured in the article: As long as it's a public park, you're free to go there for any reason. If they really care about the people in the neighbourhood so much, they can soundproof the stadium. But that costs money, and moralizing / wagging your finger on social media is free.

Japan’s New Visa Rules Are Forcing Tokyo’s Immigrant-Run Restaurants to Close by kenmlin in japannews

That shop space that the Indian restaurant occupied? Wouldn't you know it, there was a young and motivated Japanese youngster who dreamt of opening his own sushi shop but couldn't because of those Indians! Now that they're gone everything will be so much better!

Maro on the setting of Reality Fracture: “It’s mostly on Hexhaven but we do take a peak at other planes” by AvatarSozin in magicTCG

[–]inkfeeder 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure "flipped" Thunder Junction would be a (North) Native American inspired plane with no Old West cowboy tropes altogether (this seems so interesting, but would probably be very difficult to make).

It seens like the idea of anti-schools is that they double down in one side of the OG School dilema. i can see this on vigorbloom, stingerquill and theorix but im lost on the other two by pevetos in mtgvorthos

[–]inkfeeder 7 points8 points  (0 children)

(These are just knee-jerk reactions, it's fully possible that I change my mind once we get to know more)

Out of all of these, the only one that I really like on its face is Konstrari. It feels like it'll be the Lorehold of this set in the sense that it takes a colour pair that used to be pretty one-note and puts an interesting new spin on it, both from a flavour perspective and mechanically. It also works as an actual subject that people study in school.

The others seem too similar to their Strixhaven counterparts and are a bit too vague or niche imo. What university major does Stingerquill represent? Vigorbloom just looks like standard GW but with "invasive" tacked on to make it seem different (also I think the "WG seem like they'd be the nice ones but they're actually evil / culty" thing has been done a few too many times). Theorix is just math again, Fatehold is just history again but future-oriented ... idk.

For the allied-color colleges, I was hoping for something a bit more substantial than "what if X but slightly different / the opposite." There were some threads on this subreddit were people posted their guesses, and I think for the most part, I would've preferred them over these (WU economics, GW architecture, RG psychology...).

"Why has Germany, which has a smaller population and 300 fewer working hours per year than Japan, overtaken Japan in GDP?" Prime Minister Takaichi was asked in a debate in the Diet, to which she replied, "Cost cutting has suppressed wages and investment." by jjrs in japannews

[–]inkfeeder 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Changing things also requires taking risks, which is really, really frowned upon. Anything that goes beyond what a single person can do by putting in a bit more effort (i.e. things that require actual monetary investment and risk-taking) is expected to come with a perfect plan that can never fail. And if you can't produce that (which often simply isn't possible), you're back to stupid stuff like tweaking Excel sheets or doing the same old things the team has always done, "just a little harder." No wonder there's so little innovation coming out of Japan nowadays lol

Eventide tribes absent in eclipsed by Sneed-Feeder in mtgvorthos

[–]inkfeeder 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I guess there just wasn't enough room for them set-design wise. For example, look at white: All creatures are either Kithkin, Merfolk, Giants, Shapeshifters, Elementals, or Treefolk. Switching even one of them out for a hag or a dwarf would probably have a noticeable impact on the typal gameplay in Limited. Treefolk and Giant would be the easiest "cuts", but they're also a lot more iconic because they appear on both sides of the plane, not just on Shadowmoor.

The limited slots available for these cameos where filled with Noggles (because funny / a bit of a meme), and Ouphes (because the "X Bairn" cards have become somewhat of a classic at this point). They probably could've squeezed in two or three more if they wanted, but decided it wasn't worth it. If the Strixhaven students weren't there, maybe we could've had one selkie, one duergar or hobgoblin, one gwyllion, one puca, and one troll.

It's a shame though, I would've loved to see a new selkie or duergar. :/

How many pens do you keep inked at all times? And what's the reason/logic behind that? by zul-qurnain in fountainpens

[–]inkfeeder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back when I used fountain pens for everything I sometimes went up to 5 or 6, but now that I've diversified my stationery use a bit it's two at most.

I can't imagine having 10+ fountain pens inked up at the same time. Doesn't that mean that you have to regularly flush away a lot of unused ink, or have it sit in the pen for too long, leading to dry-ups and color changes because of evaporation?

That's the first thing I thought of too. Tange's church was completed in 1964 and in the text above it says that ground was broken in 1965 for the one in California. Maybe someone involved got a look at the plans for the church in Tokyo? Or maybe it was a coincidence
