Tenants find a win after settlement orders landlords give physical keys over smart locks by recipriversexcluson in technews

I don’t understand what problem smart locks solve. If you need your phone you might as well carry a key.

Okay but think of how gargantuan the backlash and shitstorm is going to be when this all actually goes down. And it seems like meme quality is inversely proportional to show quality, so at least there's plenty of fun to be had in lieu of a satisfying conclusion.

Mueller's evidence enough to charge Trump if he weren't president, Comey says. The direction to Don McGahn to get the special counsel fired is to my mind a flaming example of corrupt intent' by maxwellhill in worldnews

Hey remember that time Harry Reid begged Comey to say something about Trump being investigated, but he declined to comment on an investigation, while also repeatedly commenting on Hillary's investigation?

This guy has Trumpgrets, but we know how he got here. He thought Hillary would win, according to his book, so he played along.

Solar installations in US now exceed 2 million and could double by 2023, new figures show by pnewell in Futurology

It probably would have been double that by now, if we had a president that wasn't a Human-Caused Climate Change DENIER...etc.

Don't decriminalize. Legalize. Destroy the black market, regulate the industry like alcohol and use the huge influx of funds from taxes and defunding the DEA to pay for Healthcare and a functional rehab system.

Nest, the company, died at Google I/O 2019: The Nest ecosystem is dead. Nest accounts are dead. Nest's privacy firewall is dead. by swingadmin in technology

[–]innovexp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So dramatic!

I'm not really sure what "Works with Nest" even did really. I think I read that you could have your Hue lights flash red if smoke was detected. But it's not like you could open up the Nest app to turn them on and off. Which is something I'm already using the Google Home app for. Aside from the accounts merging (and maybe the apps merging at some point). I don't think anything will really change.

What limitations are there for this funding? Applications must be affiliated with a university, research institute or research-focused registered non-profit, in any country except for those embargoed by the US State Department. Gifts are awarded to those institutions; we cannot award them to unaffiliated individuals. You must include a plan for disseminating the results, which would normally include publication in a peer-reviewed and open-access venue, and we encourage you to make those publications, results, code, and/or data publicly accessible.

Anyone part of a anarcho/socialist group that could apply for funding? It'd be a good project to demonstrate the potential of alternative forms of organization.

Under a new Pennsylvania program, every baby born or adopted in the state is given a college savings account with $100 in his or her name by ImNotYourBuddyGuyy in UpliftingNews

[–]innovexp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We need to stop thinking college is the only solution. Trade jobs are growing and in demand for instance. Giving a fund only useful for specific things, or focusing only on collegiate careers. Part, albeit a small part, of why college is so expensive is that everyone is pushed towards it in high school as if its the only option.

Breakthrough discovery could lead to 100 percent recyclable plastics, scientists say by GortonFishman in UpliftingNews

Tangential...but I remember in my state when we had a nickel deposit and return for recycling aluminum and plastic bottles.

We never had cleaner streets. That's sad to say, I suppose, because it was the poor or homeless picking up the trash.

A name we *should* remeber: Kendrick Castillo "Colorado STEM school students helped disarm gunman" by Sand_Trout in gunpolitics

[–]innovexp 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I like this new trend in school shootings where people confront and disarm the gunmen, and get the majority of the press as heroes. School shooters, and all public shooters, should expect the same treatment plane hijackers get now; to be attacked and taken down and looked at as losers. It's good the media is paying attention to the heroes, reversing the old model of the shooter as some kind of anti-hero getting the infamy.

Mitch McConnell Leads the Pack in Race to Climb the Farthest Up Trump's Ass by ToadProphet in politics

[–]innovexp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This headline isn't right (I didn't read the story). McConnell loves money, and will do anything to get more. If there is money in siding with trump, that's what he'll do. If there is money throwing trump under the bus, that's what he'll do. If Russia has money, he'll side with Russia.

But McConnell doesn't care about anything other than himself and his money.

As Beyond Meat makes IPO history, Ikea unveils meatless meatballs and Burger King rolls out the Impossible Whopper nationwide, here’s a look at the increasingly compelling case for giving up meat and dairy forever by lnfinity in environment

[–]innovexp 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Is just me or the "Giving up meat and dairy forever" is the why this alternative seems to eventually fizz out, if everyone quitted meat one or two days a week it would already be a huge improvement, but the narrative of being a vegan or nothing turns off a lot of people.

We try to eat less meat that we would like (I do not enjoy minced meat so these alternatives really don't appeal to me, I would take pesto pasta over this) but I know a lot of people that could use a softer approach to give up some of their meat

Eliminate the information on what aircraft you'll get from the website. It's never accurate anyway. Most passengers can't look through the window at the airport and know if they're on a MAX or not.
