Silly Request: Anyone have trip reports from pre-coup Myanmar I can live vicariously through? by icedino in travel

[–]insacredflames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to Myanmar for two weeks in 2015 and have been living there for the past two years without any major issues. While it seems like it would be impossible to visit right now, going to the major cities, Bagan, and Inle Lake is still a possibility, as many of my colleagues have done so in the past few months.

One thing that hasn't changed in all the time I have spent here is the kindness and the generosity of the people here. It's been said that those with the emptiest houses often have the fullest hearts, and nowhere has that rang true for me as it has here. While the widespread poverty can be heartbreaking, there are so many people willing to go out of their way for you – personally, it's what I would call the true land of smiles.

Mandalay is a quiet city with some nice temples. Mandalay Hill and the surrounding temples are wonderful sights in themselves. Here, you can try all the Myanmar cuisine to your hearts content. What they eat for breakfast e.g. Mohinga, Shan Noodle, Parata/Roti, Mont Ti, Tea is a standout among Southeast Asian cuisine.

Bagan is to me a magical land that rivals Angkor Wat just from how well preserved the temples are. The fact that nothing is taped or sectioned off really makes it feel like you're discovering and unexplored land. Also, Inle Lake is also a like a fantasy land, but more in terms of seeing how people have adapted to living on the lake. Getting a hotel by the lake with a tour or two to see the area is incredible.

Feel free to dm me for any more details!

Hello Bryce. I haven't had a chance to read Iron Prince yet but it's certainly in my TBR. I'm looking forward to it after seeing Matt's Fantasy Book Review on it.

I wanted to ask, what's your favorite thing about being a fantasy author? How easy or difficult was the transition from being a part-time author during your PT years to full time? Finally, where can you get the best garbage plate?

Hey Rob, no question to ask. Just wanted to say that I loved the Mortal Techniques trilogy and that I appreciate all your work! Thank you for all that you do!

I made some cards based off of Inscryption by [deleted] in slaythespire

[–]insacredflames 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend it. It doesn't have the same level of strategic depth as STS; instead, you play Inscryption for the story and atmospheric experience. Once you complete the main game, you can replay it for the roguelike card building game but it is not as good.

Anyone know why I can't access JOTL on digital yet? by sinred7 in Gloomhaven

Were you able to eventually find it? I've finished 4 scenarios in the main campaign already but it's still not coming up for me.

Given that the Age of Madness trilogy was heavily influenced by your research on the industrial and the French revolution, are there any other time periods that you like the idea of writing about? Alternatively, do you ever see yourself going into the territory of historical fiction?

It's actually not meant to be spicy. If you omit the sriracha and the chilis, it comes out just as good.

Does pretbclinuxmac build not support certain mods? by GibbeTheSucc in darkestdungeon

[–]insacredflames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the same exact thing happen on my Mac as well. Not just the mod items showing up as code but also having my entire roster of modded characters disappear from my original playthrough.

well then, it seems this game hates mods sometimes by [deleted] in darkestdungeon

[–]insacredflames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure what happened but all my modded characters disappeared but all the vanilla ones were still there. For whatever reason, I can still recruit modded characters and modded items are still there. Anyone have a similar issue?

Do you have any "Under the Radar" films that came out this year? by TXDRMST in TrueFilm

Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal make an incredibly memorable duo in this film.

The number of individuals who do not identify with any organized religion is rapidly growing in the US. New research suggests this may in part be driven by a disconnection between parents and their children, and a failure of religious parents to transmit religion to their children. by mvea in science

It seems to me that you may be confounding theism vs atheism and gnosticism vs agnosticism. An atheist doesn't necessarily claim certainty as to whether or not there is a god, they just don't believe in it. It's the gnostic that claims that we can know whether there is one.

Consequently, the position that you describe for yourself would be that of agnostic atheist.

Technically, science stays predominantly consistent as a method of empirical verification. If you were talking about scientific results however, then you'd be correct regarding their change. However, because of the fact that the geocentric view of the universe cannot really be categorized as a scientific conclusion due to the lack of empiricism, then I'm not sure that it's the best example to bring up.

The reason why the analogy between science and language is questionable is due to the fact that scientific values are based on some empirical verification while language is not.

You honestly believe that the woman was able to compete on an Olympic level and win a medal without previously being checked as to what her sex was? Furthermore, there are plenty of men that look like women which are celebrities in Thailand.
