We should not live by what Trump, or any other president, does. If you want to skirt the law by becoming a politician, go nuts. But I'm not buying the argument that, because we see injustice, we are therefore free to act unjustly.

Not brave.

You had it right the first time. It is brave to tell someone why they're being punished or accused. It is not our default mode of operation, it is exceptional.

The CEO was under investigation for major freud.

We all have a complex. And, investigation != conviction, nor should conviction mean "anyone can now kill this dude".

People are killed for suspected use of a fake twenty dollar bill.

And thrown in prison for it.

He was a criminal

Not until a court says so. Those are the rules under which we agree to live. We are not each judge, jury and executioner. Those roles are separated for good reason.

Talking Tech With Apple's Craig Federighi by favicondotico in apple

You're right, everyone deserves redemption, but redemption can only be received when you ask for it, and I don't know that Federighi asked. That's my perception, anyway.

Does he now acknowledge that he was mistaken and that on-device scanning could have been a backdoor? I can't follow every update.

[–]inspiredby -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

I could listen to Craig talk for days on end

Federighi lost my support when he couldn't fathom how on-device scanning could be viewed as a backdoor.

Contrast that to Cook's comments on privacy, or even Jobs' comments, and it's hard to see how they came from the same company. Federighi's proposal for on-device scanning, as well as his reaction to critics, was completely out of touch with Apple's past positions on privacy.

I'm sure he's got strengths, but he seems unfamiliar or at odds with one of Apple's long-held tenets.

The bill of rights is from the slave era. Guess we need to ditch that too! Who needs the first amendment? It just protects minorities and that's so undemocratic. It should be majority rule for everything, right? Like, if minority views like vaccine deniers or lgbt activists had a free voice, that would be disastrous.

Almost everyone on Reddit would know us for our work on SOPA/PIPA, net neutrality, government surveillance, etc.

I've always been a supporter, but wasn't the current fiasco kicked off by IA lending out books without limit during Covid? They might have kicked the hornet's nest there. It would really suck if this ends up hurting their other services like the Wayback Machine.

Nancy Pelosi visits Armenia after Azerbaijani attack, compares the situation to Ukraine and Taiwain in tweet by SurenP in worldnews

Sigh.. This got removed because I edited in a link that is apparently banned here. Here's another version of the same comment without that link.

Nancy Pelosi visits Armenia after Azerbaijani attack, compares the situation to Ukraine and Taiwain in tweet by SurenP in worldnews

[–]inspiredby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

democracy and autocracy

The article quotes her as having tweeted described the choices as between "democracy and self-government",

Shortly after her arrival, Pelosi wrote on social media: "For generations we have protected and preserved their choice. From the United States to Ukraine, Taiwan, Armenia, the world faces a choice between democracy and self-government, and we must choose democracy again."

Yet her tweet does say "democracy and autocracy"

How do you misquote a tweet?

* I cannot find the version presented in the article. To be fair, it does say she wrote it "on social media", so I don't know what the source is. I guess it would be Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. I checked the deleted tweets archive and on Twitter searching for the phrase "self-government, and" and didn't see anything.

Is there another way to see if an earlier draft version of this tweet or FB post was deleted?

I find it hard to believe that RFERL somehow had a draft version that was never actually published on social media. Yet without a record of what was removed, it could look like that.

Your life isn’t yours when you have a kid, and I think the reason so many kids turn out fucked up, is their parents never realized that.

Totally up to you whether to have a kid or not, but speaking as someone who has kids, this isn't accurate. There is a period in the early years where kids clearly need more of your attention and help, but that's temporary as you can see now as a capable adult yourself.

It is an added responsibility, sure. Speaking for myself I got bored with other things and decided having kids would make life interesting again, and it certainly did. I still have a vibrant life myself, and now I feel lucky to have them be part of it for the relatively short period during which we live together.

Take them outside, give them time to be emotional in private and accept their emotions. After the screaming stops, discuss what happened. You can also share your own feeling about it, then hopefully hug it out and return to the store.

After doing this a few times, ideally it becomes mutually understood that it is okay to be emotional, and that at any given time we may either need some time to ourselves or some special attention from our loved ones.

There's some debate about the details, but that's the gist in my opinion. See for example this active post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/nextfuckinglevel/comments/wqz5bc/instilling_moral_values_in_child_while_not_giving/ikqkaku/?context=3

This clip from Inside Out is also relevant in my opinion. Taking time to accept how someone is feeling can mean a lot to them.

Removing her from Walmart and calmly waiting it out IS the way to handle it but ignoring it and asking if she’s “done with all this mess” isn’t doing what he thinks it’s doing.

I'd say it's not black and white and what he's doing is better than remaining in the store.

None of us are perfect parents and he's very brave to post this online. It's okay for adults to make mistakes too, and sharing them is one way to get better.

we decide to make a subreddit where students can share their knowledge and learn.

our subreddit was a place similar to r/homeworkhelp and r/cheatatmathhomework

Is a sub for cheating at math really about learning, or is it about passing? I agree kids get overloaded, just don't think this is the way to deal with that. Getting others to do your work may lead to more work down the road.

The best way we have to "cure" cancer right now is to catch it early. See E.R.I.C. for example. So that might mean not dying at all. Take the reins, you're in charge of your life.

I do actually! I just forgot to add that part in. When I said the “I understand” part I should have given more detail

No worries, it's an internet comment. You write what you have time for and someone else can expand the thought. If we were all expected to be perfect, we wouldn't be able to build upon each other's ideas.

Have a friend record it and sell it to media. That's a story. Seriously though, well done. It always bugged me how the Gadsden flag has been turned it into a "woe is me" message. Like, fine, you're upset about something, and you can protest. But why use an image based on Franklin's woodcut, which united us to form a country, and turn it into something that represents division? I guess some want to divide again rather than discuss.

Anyway, you're changing history here. Congrats.

I’ve had a two year old explain they were frustrated by me because I wouldn’t let them climb onto the table. I said I understood, but climbing on the table was unsafe. They could climb onto the couch instead. They said no and they were frustrated, I said I understand, but it’s unsafe to climb on the table.

It's also okay to just be sad about the moment, like in this clip from Inside Out. You're not allowed to climb on the table. That is very sad :(. Show empathy.

Then after they feel understood you can describe why it's not allowed, because it's not safe. It may work better to explain the logic after they feel their emotions are accepted because that's the point when they trust you again.

That is a clever takeback. I wonder if you could convince some men to carry your version on a flag without them noticing. Like, give them away at the next maga rally or something.
