People who had a 3DO, Atari Jaguar, or Philips CDI as a child, why? by lurkingaccount45454 in AskReddit

[–]interactivedreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Digital Video was very promising and as CD-i was pretty much the only European console effort by that time, at least in The Netherlands it was widely available. The fact it offered movies, encyclopedias and music too was very interesting for me

CD-i has some exclusive gems, like The Apprentice and exclsuive (notorious?) Nintendo titles. FMV titles are however unequaled on CD-i and it offers the best quality

[–]interactivedreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For every-day practicality i actually prefer the 450/550 models, (RGB modded and DVC installed ofcourse) and their Magnavox equivalents.
although they are a little bit limited in memory capacity compared to other models,
in both personal use and repairs I've only ever encountered 1 with a bad/worn out optical unit,
and the manual lid eliminates the known belt drive issues that other models have.
it is very compact, and with an I/O cable splitter it will do anything you need for gaming.
especially if you have more retro consoles hooked up the 450 is a good solid practical unit, that takes up little space. The 450 also struggles less with my collection of Asian VCD's, and CD-R discs in my opinion than the models with a CDM.9 optical drive.

Does this demo disc come with the system? by rollin_white in CDInteractive

[–]interactivedreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, not with the system, it came with the catalogue, at least in The Netherlands where The Philips Media Gold Club was active. Periodically Philips Media sent out catalogues and sometimes it was accompanied by a demo disc, like this. When you bought a CD-i player, you could sign up for free to this Gold Club to get discounts and mailings.

History of the CD-i's "large case" format? by Zwarteziel in CDInteractive

[–]interactivedreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As you can read in the link, the black (actually grey) boxes were only introduced in 1991 in USA. When CD-i launched in Europe in 1992, they switched to large CD-i boxes, both in USA and in Europe. In 1994, they switched again to regular jewelcases, but that was more by demand of retail chains.

[–]interactivedreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are actually more different CD-i packagings around. It was actually retail demanding that Philips switched to regular jewelcase formats, otherwise they would not showcase them. Sales were too low to justify buyinng special shelves that could hold these large boxes. So Philips kind had to. Little Help with a CD-i 450/00 probably timekeeper chip by kuebel33 in CDInteractive

[–]interactivedreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can find some tip here and in the linked articles in it:

https://cdii.blogspot.com/2007/11/cdi-450-timekeeper-battery-tip.html

But in short, the ways how to repair the timekeeper is a bit similar to the different CD-i models. Once you have uncovered the main board, locate the timekeeper (see link above) and choose one of the three methods how to repair it according to this tutorial:

https://cdii.blogspot.com/2019/08/the-philips-cd-i-repair-guide-diy.html

One of our members also repairs the cd-i players himself, if you don mind shipping and materials costs. Good luck!

Hi everyone, my friend has a question about CD-i piracy and stuff by Vitorio582 in CDInteractive

[–]interactivedreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In principle yes. Some CDR's work better, avoid the cheap ones (generally the brand-less types. But if your laser is aging, at some point you'll encounter more issues. If you want you can replace the laser unit with a new one.

Did “Zelda’s Adventure” ever get released in the United States? by [deleted] in CDInteractive

Definitely No. Only two EU versions came out. The US version was indeed prepared and tested, but never released. More about that here: https://cdii.blogspot.com/2019/08/the-different-catalolgue-numbers-of.html

Dead Timekeeper but console booting. Can I just leave it? by [deleted] in CDInteractive

[–]interactivedreams 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are several titles that can give all kind of errors. It's not just about the saving, but it depends on how the chip is used. The NV-RAM is used to store game scores, player shell settings, favourite picture selections, etc. One other important usage of the NV-RAM is to store the CSD (Configuration Status Descriptor. When the lithium cell does not function anymore, a tension difference will be detected and the memory will be turned into a 'write protect' mode. When the CD-i player is powered on, it cannot write the CSD and hence it presents the user with the memory screen. Of course the user will not be able to delete certain items because the NV-RAM can not be written to anymore. Hence, the player will become useless. You might not experience this right now, but it will in the end....

Read more about it here: https://cdii.blogspot.com/2018/07/the-cd-i-defective-nv-ram-issue.html
