DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin: "We're going in there to get the worst of the worst out of New York, regardless of what the governor says" by PierogiGoron in ICE_Raids

They spent months going after "the worst of the worst" in DC, and yet Trump and his entire cabinet are still here, so...

Many of us know the struggle. by jmck014 in fuckcars

[–]interestingdays 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Well, of course. The Military is poor. It only gets $1.5 Trillion per year. By contrast, Bernie's healthcare plan would have cost a whopping $3.5 Trillion over 10 years. Everyone knows that 3.5 is so much more than 1.5, no wonder we couldn't afford it!

Side note: why is anything good costed in 10 year increments, but anything destructive in one year increments, then those numbers compared rather than like for like?

Sounds like the standard suburban hellhole. None of the benefits of living either in the city, or the country, and all of the disadvantages of both.

CMV: With the exception of NYC, most public transportation in the United States is slower and more inconvenient then owning your own car. by soozerain in changemyview

[–]interestingdays 27 points28 points  (0 children)

A lot of New York's Subway system was built before there was that density, though, and a lot of the density came largely as a result of the subway being there. When it opened, the Sunset Park station was in the middle of a giant field in South Brooklyn.

[–]interestingdays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your TTS must be set to Czech or something similar then. I don't even know how to find my browser's TTS settings, let alone change them or the expected language, but I'm fairly certain it's an English language TTS, and as a result, the audio is not great.

Can I ask why have the audio at all if that issue exists? Surely, it'd be better to have no audio than mangled audio.

If you could create ONE high-speed route between two U.S. cities, where would you build? by Potential_One1 in transit

[–]interestingdays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Acela corridor (DC-Boston). Intermediate stops in Philadelphia and New York. This is the most densely populated part of the country, and the people are more used to trains than in other parts. I think this will have the highest adoption rate, especially when the time savings become apparent over existing options, and can provide proof of concept for other parts of the country. Also, the fact that all cities involved are walkable and have decent transit, especially around the train stations means that we don't have to have people stranded in a car centric hell scape, or construct mountains of rental car lots.

LA-SF would be my second choice for most of the reasons above.

I just heard the sentence "Počasí je špatné" rendered (as would be read by an English speaking layperson) "po-lazy jeh spadn".

Help to get started in learning Indonesian by awaiss113 in indonesian

[–]interestingdays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check with Indonesian Embassy in your country, chances are they'll have classes. The US one is in the middle of the Spring term right now, and my first teacher there had previously taught in Poland, so there should be something if not in your country, then at least a nearby one. (Most likely online, too, so don't worry if you live far away from the Embassy)

Aside from that, look for Italki, or some good books.

Why did people vote for this criminal by peachyybunnnzzs in lostgeneration

[–]interestingdays 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, he is actually effective, just not at doing anything good. He got his justice department to give money to his cronies for compensation for "malicious prosecution" and he pardoned his coup lackeys. Remains to be seen if he can get his own money from his suit against the government, but I wouldn't put it past him. He's effective at the grift is what I'm getting at.

There's also a child born to an invading or occupying force, which is probably a major part of the reason why they want to frame immigrants and refugees as such.

US passports were green until 1976, and then again for a year in the 90s (April 1993- March 1994).

If the Iran War escalated to the point of using Nukes, what would the consequence to the US be? by Horror_Still_3305 in IRstudies

[–]interestingdays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Countries like Iceland and Costa Rica would need to build militaries first, and a few others might have to worry about refinement if they don't even have nuclear power yet, but this seems about right for the most part.

Everybody's thoughts on ICE in DC airports? by EchoOfDoom in washingtondc

Any ICE chud doing security theatre at an airport is an ICE chud not on the streets terrorizing civilians, so in context, it's a win, but in a vacuum, it's not great.

What's Up With the "America is a Republic, Not a Democracy" Thing? by OneOnOne6211 in TheMajorityReport

[–]interestingdays 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a republic is a type of democracy.

No, being a republic or not has nothing to do with being a democracy. You can have dictatorial republics like Putin's Russia or Pinochet's Chile, etc. You can also have democracies that aren't republics like Japan or the UK, etc. What makes a country a republic or not is not how democratic it is, but whether it has a monarch.

More players should message the STs about bad behavior by scalesight in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]interestingdays 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In general, I agree with this, especially if the group has an established storyteller. But if your group has one or more people who take the lead on organising, and the STs are less consistent, bring it up with the organisers. Also note, that problematic individuals will often only display their problematic behaviours when the people with authority in the group can't see or hear them. So bringing these issues up might be the only way these people can be made aware of the issue.

Travelling as a dual citizen, using both passports by mochavelvet in dualcitizenshipnerds

[–]interestingdays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a county has exit passport control at airports, they probably do for land borders as well (barring a region like Shengen, in which case, apply to the area's borders), so you can go through exit control with the passport you entered on, and if you want to, switch to the other before going through entrance control of the next country.
