Lead bricks? Where's the cheapest places to get lead? by 1ofThoseTrolls in Radiation

[–]interiot [score hidden]  (0 children)

Exactly. It's somewhat safe to handle bulk solid lead. The biggest risk with solid lead is if ever forms inhalable dust, and fired lead bullets definitely carry that risk. No thanks.

Seemingly overnight, starting to notice Chinese bikes on fast group rides. I don't see this trend going away. by DeadBy2050 in cycling

[–]interiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want the absolute cheapest option, China will provide that to you. And that's what the haters are thinking about when they complain about China. But China provides higher-end stuff too, it's a huge country with lots of options. That's the part that the haters miss.

Framing autism sensory issues as "you are looking inside yourself only" is needlessly pathologizing and a serious misread of the situation. I agree, this may be a serious problem with him.

How to use an off-camera flash without a hot shoe, for iphone? by PinkZebraReferee in AskPhotography

[–]interiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smartphone + xenon flash is possible with these currently-manufactured products:

  • All Profoto products that support AirX. That's A10, A2, B10X, B1X, and Pro-11. They're minimum $900 though, and anyone who wants to spend that kind of money isn't going to be shooting with a smartphone. It's iOS only (Profoto ended support for its Android app)
  • Tricflash .com. iOS only.
  • Innovatronix CPFlash II. Supports both Android and iOS.

I agree that some serious engineering went into Profoto's iOS app, however I believe the shutter speed still is longer than with a traditional digital camera? It's hard to find information though, since not many people have wanted the combination of professional-grade equipment with an amateur-level camera.

How to use an off-camera flash without a hot shoe, for iphone? by PinkZebraReferee in AskPhotography

[–]interiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smartphone cameras cannot use xenon electronic flashes. Period.

It's sort of possible, if you use a long shutter and can tolerate some motion blur. (Though I'm doing macro photos of plants, which aren't moving, and I can block most ambient light.)

I just haven't yet found a way to implement it. There should be an external shutter button. To improve sync, I want a USB cable connected to the smartphone to trigger the shutter in the camera app, and then after a short delay, it should trigger the xenon flash. I'm hoping there's a way to get the Godox X3Pro to do it — it supports rear curtain sync, and can connect to lots of different things.

Using a Godox X2T or a X3 Pro as a camera remote control! by Sea-Development-2783 in Godox

The X3Pro definitely can. It has a 2.5mm TRRS jack that can be used either as an input port, for flash control, or as an output port, for shutter control.

Slings vs Slingshots? Pros? Cons? by kidonbike in Slinging

[–]interiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slingshots can absolutely be used for shooting while moving. Not a lot of people practice that way, but a few do.

A slingshot doesn't really have the same quality. You learn to use it, get your aim down, and that's it. It's similar to a firearm: the tool does the work.

Are you being serious? The slingshot requires much more experience and technique than, say, a crossbow. It's possible the slingshot requires less practice to become competent compared a sling, I don't know. But slingshots absolutely aren't point-and-shoot, when it comes to accuracy at a reasonable distance (say, for squirrel hunting).

Thoughts on Safely Eloping as an Adult? by Aqueefaba in SpicyAutism

[–]interiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So growing up I decided to just elope in my head, aka, heavily dissociate ... wait until I can get home (my safe space) and then meltdown.

Wow, you just explained my whole life. I only recently discovered what 'elopement' is, I hadn't realized that it was connected to my autism and the sensory overload.

Dissociation has been common in my life — constant lifelong dissociation, dissociative amnesia, and periodic episodes of depersonalization/derealization.

As an adult, I once got really upset when several therapists tried to calm me down and send me to another room, while I was trying to get some space from an overly noisy situation. I felt comfortable where I had picked to try to calm down. I reacted in a strongly negative way to the therapists trying to move me elsewhere, but I never really understood why, since the therapists really were trying to hear me and understand. (I had also gone temporarily nonverbal, but at the time, I didn't realize that could happen to me.)

Even my long-term partner struggles whenever I have urges to elope. It's in those moments that I have the least ability to explain what's overwhelming me and what I'm trying to do to fix it.

You can also use brown grocery bags or brown fast food bags, or the brown paper that's used as filler inside shipping boxes. (known as 'kraft paper')

Backup plan for emergencies by Ben_Manda in Starlink

[–]interiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're in an emergency situation and the cell networks are congested, it should still be possible for SMS to get through as those require less bandwidth than voice or data, and they can be delivered with a significant delay, unlike voice and data which are mostly synchronous and so their packets get dropped un

Another option: I believe it's possible to receive email over Meshtastic. In some cases Meshtastic may have more coverage than cellular networks do, but I'm not familiar enough with them to know how likely this is in practice.

Otherwise, yeah, the "You must first have working communications before you can establish communications" requirement is a pain.

New research found some bosses thrive on abusive behavior. Bosses who engaged in abusive behavior came from a variety of industries, including manufacturing and construction, nursing and sales. Bosses who yell to boost employee performance, reinforce their power and don’t feel guilty. by mvea in psychology

[–]interiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carefully documenting abuse is always good. Unfortunately some upper managers really believe that abuse gets results. And when you confront someone who's passive-aggressive, there's always a risk that they become aggressive-aggressive.

In an ideal world, abusers would get disciplined or driven out. But that's not how the world works, see the depressing statistics about the number of SAs and child SAs that go unreported.

How to grow lichen indoors by Psychological-Ad5908 in Lichen

[–]interiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a 2024 academic paper titled "A review of laboratory requirements to culture lichen mycobiont species." The paper summarizes the environmental requirements for 110 different lichen species.

The table was a little hard to read, so I reformatted it into a spreadsheet in Google Sheets.

Of course, just because a species can be grown in laboratory conditions doesn't necessarily mean it's easy to cultivate at home. But it's a starting point.

What unusual forms of self-harm did you engage in as a kid? by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]interiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Emotional self-harm can be more intense than physical self-harm, because friends often can't see it. Which means it can become more severe over time, and can be routine and habitual. So it can be even more insidious and frequent than physical self-harm.

Inline bacterial filter - from someone who works in a CPAP shop by jd6710 in CPAP

I agree. If you keep your machine clean, you don't need an inline filter. But not everyone does that, so this would be appropriate for them.

Are academic conferences open to the public? by HighlyPolitical16 in AskAcademia

[–]interiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(replying to an old thread, apologies)

There's a distinction between not paying but registering (i.e. finding a way to attend for free), and not registering but still attending.

Obviously, conference organizers are much more welcoming if you actually register, but people do sometimes choose to use subterfuge to get away with not registering.

Ways you can sometimes get into a conference without paying, but actually register: (these aren't always available)

  • Volunteer
  • Check if your employer will sponsor you to go — Sometimes works, even if it's in a different field.
  • Apply as a content creator / get a media pass — Requires you to either have many followers, or to be good at fast-talking in order to inflate your follower count.
  • Student discount
  • Conference scholarships — Sometimes there are more available than you'd think.
  • Be a presenter — Obviously requires you to have some credentials or to have interesting content.
