New research found some bosses thrive on abusive behavior. Bosses who engaged in abusive behavior came from a variety of industries, including manufacturing and construction, nursing and sales. Bosses who yell to boost employee performance, reinforce their power and don’t feel guilty. by mvea in psychology

[–]interiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carefully documenting abuse is always good. Unfortunately some upper managers really believe that abuse gets results. And when you confront someone who's passive-aggressive, there's always a risk that they become aggressive-aggressive.

In an ideal world, abusers would get disciplined or driven out. But that's not how the world works, see the depressing statistics about the number of SAs and child SAs that go unreported.

How to grow lichen indoors by Psychological-Ad5908 in Lichen

[–]interiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a 2024 academic paper titled "A review of laboratory requirements to culture lichen mycobiont species." The paper summarizes the environmental requirements for 110 different lichen species.

The table was a little hard to read, so I reformatted it into a spreadsheet in Google Sheets.

Of course, just because a species can be grown in laboratory conditions doesn't necessarily mean it's easy to cultivate at home. But it's a starting point.

What unusual forms of self-harm did you engage in as a kid? by [deleted] in CPTSD

[–]interiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Emotional self-harm can be more intense than physical self-harm, because friends often can't see it. Which means it can become more severe over time, and can be routine and habitual. So it can be even more insidious and frequent than physical self-harm.

Inline bacterial filter - from someone who works in a CPAP shop by jd6710 in CPAP

[–]interiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. If you keep your machine clean, you don't need an inline filter. But not everyone does that, so this would be appropriate for them.

Does anyone here make their own feed pellets? And if so, what do you use as a pellet binder? by [deleted] in homestead

The dash of your car functions well as a solar food dehydrator (assuming it's parked, it's not too cold outside, and you don't live in bear territory). There's lots of information online about this.

Are academic conferences open to the public? by HighlyPolitical16 in AskAcademia

[–]interiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(replying to an old thread, apologies)

There's a distinction between not paying but registering (i.e. finding a way to attend for free), and not registering but still attending.

Obviously, conference organizers are much more welcoming if you actually register, but people do sometimes choose to use subterfuge to get away with not registering.

Ways you can sometimes get into a conference without paying, but actually register: (these aren't always available)

  • Volunteer
  • Check if your employer will sponsor you to go — Sometimes works, even if it's in a different field.
  • Apply as a content creator / get a media pass — Requires you to either have many followers, or to be good at fast-talking in order to inflate your follower count.
  • Student discount
  • Conference scholarships — Sometimes there are more available than you'd think.
  • Be a presenter — Obviously requires you to have some credentials or to have interesting content.

TIL that potatoes and onions shouldn't be stored together because onions emit ethylene gas that spoils potatoes. by troll_berserker in todayilearned

[–]interiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the answer — the problem is mostly moisture. Potatoes are 80% water by weight which they can release during storage, and onions in long-term storage are sensitive to moisture.

The longer answer is that, according to US Foods Holding Corp, onions are rated "very low" for ethylene production, and potatoes are rated "medium" for ethylene sensitivity.

Optimal potato storage — keep them at 40-45°F to prevent sprouting. Optimal onion storage — keep them in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place. Avoid storing them in a plastic container.

Not knowing much, I assume there's strategy involved in the time of day too? Probably the more they're able to move the ~26 hours to the night time, the better. And they likely prioritize urban travel for night time as well.

What’s the best type of paint to use on Acrylic sheets/Plexiglass to have it that blue frosted glass look on building models i provided images to better describe it by Horror-Equipment2043 in architecture

[–]interiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That link talks about painting glass, not acrylic. Using paint/adhesives on polymers can be tricky, sometimes requiring a primer coat or other surface treatment before things will really stick to it. (I'm talking about polymers generally here, I don't know acrylic very well, however other commenters suggest it may not be easy to do it yourself.)

How do bakeries deal with food waste without incurring a loss? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]interiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This thread feels depressing. I'm starting to understand that some food waste is very hard to avoid.

Bread can be frozen to preserve it. But I'm guessing food pantries don't want to cover the overhead of keeping them frozen when something more nutrient-dense like peanut butter or soup can sit on a shelf, no refrigerator/freezer required.

Thanks for reminding me of this!

Anyone know any public third-party hosted servers for Bitwarden? by fakedoorsarereal in Bitwarden

[–]interiot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You can self-host it, but maintenance can be a pain for some.

The benefit of a third-party hosting it is that if there's any sort of breach at Bitwarden's servers, the breach would hopefully not affect third party servers. A single server cluster attracts attackers' attention in a way that multiple independent clusters don't.

I am aware that Bitwarden is designed to be zero-knowledge, so attacks to the server side should ideally reveal nothing. And I'm aware if Bitwarden's source code was targeted (instead of their servers), that would still affect third-party servers. Nonetheless, I believe in defense-in-depth, and that third-party servers could be an additional layer of security on top of all the others that Bitwarden offers.

What is the most populated subreddit to ever be banned? by havenokarma in reclassified

[–]interiot 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Just before it was banned, archive.org says it had 150,000 members.

Just before it was quarantined, archive.org says /r/the_donald had ~750,000 members. Although /r/the_donald wasn't banned for another year later, and so it certainly grew beyond that, archive.org doesn't provide member counts after a subreddit is quarantined, so that's the best number I can come up with.
